Excellent album.

Interesting stuff so far.

I recommend Ulrich Schnauss to anyone who loves dreamy soundscapes -- it's really lovely. Also, Waits is clearly NOT phoning it in on Alice.

Not much love for Americana or psychedelia here.

You have the most incredible persecution complex I've ever seen of anyone on the internet.

The SOMB doesn't love psychedelia? Do you really believe what you're saying?

The board likes Americana too, though maybe not in the same, specific/traditional way you do.

Psychedelia and Americana are not well represented on the lists.

It's pretty much brit pop. Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp, etc.

Did Jefferson Airplane's psychedelic classic even make the top albums list for it's decade?

You know I would think the term "pretty much" would require a large majority, let alone more than one in twelve.

Good stuff, though.

Huh...gotta listen to an album I suppose. I would've said "world music influences a la Poi Dog" (thanks to 'XRT's choices of on-air tracks sad.gif).

Liars - They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top

Year
: 2002

US Chart Position: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #30 (year), #183 (decade), #1479 (all-time)

AMG Says: "The debut LP from Brooklyn's Liars is a churning collection of jerky punk rock, funk grooves, and computerized mayhem that oddly enough comes off quite charming. With sufficiently angular guitars, British-tinged vocals, and a truly pummeling bass presence, the group rocks with phenomenal energy and absolutely no restraint. The half-hour-long closer, "The Dust That Makes the Mud," collapses into a puzzlingly repetitive, sample-ridden hip-hop beat that ends things on a bizarre note, but the lead-up is pure rock & roll, complete with the attitude and aggression that makes for a great listen. Liars have a surprisingly unique approach that distinguishes them from other groups in their willingness to experiment with different tones, volumes, and styles, all of which make They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument On an astounding debut. Catchy group vocals are all over the disc, and just about every chorus is instantly memorable yet still somewhat pummeling. The use of digital sounds and beats only adds to the unique properties of the record, giving it a feel somewhat akin to later Les Savy Fav records, only with a much more punk-fueled sound. Liars are something special, and when a young band puts out a record like this it is hard not to pay attention. Where they'll go from here is impossible to guess, but with a band this hyperactively creative, that seems to be the point."

Ranked Highest By: Gil-Scott Heroin (#7)

truth. I suspect (and hopefully no one will take this the wrong way) that although there are quite a few fans of Americana (I won't speak to psychedelia, as it's not really my area of expertise), they are less likely to vote in these polls than some other fans. I'm not sure why that is, but it seems to be true. It may not be, however, I could just be making it up.

Maybe? I'm only going off my recollection of how much MTV/radio airplay I wtinessed of each. Actual chart numbers might prove me to be full of shit.
HewlettsDaughter
Garbage and the Foo Fighters are the same band to me in that I completely forget they exist and then theycome out with a single and I get all like "oh wow, these guys...they were kinda cool, right?" And then I revisit them for like a day and proceed to forget the even exist for another three to five-year span.

With that said, that Garbage album is appropriately placed on the countdown in my eyes.

Garbage's US chart positions:

"Stupid Girl" 24
"Push It" 52
"Special" 52
"Only Happy When it Rains" 55
"Why Do You Love Me" 94
"Vow" 97

Their UK positions:

Only Happy When it Rains 29
Queer 13
Stupid Girl 4
Milk 10
Push It 9
I Think I'm Paranoid 9

I'd completely forgotten about 'Queer', but now I'm reminded, I recall quite liking it.

I gave a stack of a dozen or so "unsellables" to a guy standing outside a used record store in Downers Grove. It works pretty well. I plan to head up there this month with a sack of about 80 cd's. some are pretty good. I just don't care about getting money for them since I uploaded all the songs I want to iTunes.
Bob Loblaw
I'm shocked to hear that there are still independent record stores trying to make a go of it. Most of the ones around here closed up shortly after the Napster/iTunes/download boom. I don't personally know anyone who's bought a CD in a long time.

Then again, elc and I (and others I'm not thinking of right now) probably represent a small minority who still purchase most of their music. I'll go a step further and say that downloading music for free (which represents about 1/4 of my music...just so I'm not being a hypocrite) influences people to give records less a chance to reveal deeper layers. As with anything, your more likely to give your time and emotion to something you've financially invested in.

I buy cd's still. I upload them immediately at 192 or 256 in Itunes, then keep the cd and the front sleeve in a cd wallet, while tossing out the plastic and the back side. They are for backup purposes only. Eventually I willi give them away or sell them.

If iTunes offered 192kbps or higher, I would never buy another CD. Still , I do buy iTunes music for when I like a song but not an album.

It works that way with software applications as well. If you can download twenty 300$ software synthesizers for free, you won't appreciate them like you would if you bought a single software synth for 300$ from a store.

not necessarily.

when you buy an actual cd, you many often try to force yourself to like it so that the purchase would be sort of justified. but when you download an album it either clicks with you on the first listen or it doesn't and you just leave it on your harddrive, sort of like you'd put it on the shelf. then in a few months out of boredom you try to listen it again and you get it. and then you go and buy it.

I do both of these things. It's as important to me to have the booklet & liner notes as it is to have the higher bitrate. I'll buy some cds after the "free trial download," but the majority of those I buy are the ones I know I'll want no matter what. Downloading and never buying is, you know, stealing from the artist--not just from hir label.

Wowser. Props to Diesel - I thought I'd be the highest voter for this on SOMB.

Excellent album.

I tried to get into AWK but just couldn't. Ended up taking that album back for a refund ;(

Damn. To be honest, AWK is one of those artists that you either like or you don't - and you tend to know quite quickly. He is very silly, and very cheesy, but it's that honesty of sound that I love so much about him.

Well, that and the fact that listening to it has the same effect on me as a wrap of speed.

re: CDs. I buy CDs for two reasons. The first is that it's an artist I really like and I'm gonna buy it anyway. Like Converge or Tool. The other is that I downloaded the album and liked it, and so I want to hear it in a quality superior to shitty mp3.
Diesel
Damn am I happy to see three albums I voted for pop here. Especially AWK and Opeth, who I really thought wouldn't make it here at all.

Yeah, AWK is polarizing, all right. The AMG blurb is right: you'll either hate it and think its the most stupid thing you've ever heard, or you'll love it precisely because it IS the most stupid thing you've ever heard. I remember hearing "Party Hard" for the first time and thinking it was simply one of the most exciting songs I'd heard in years ... and the whole record is FILLED with songs like that, and is short enough in length to not wear out its welcome. I Get Wet is pop metal, every bit as silly and arena ready as the best Def Leppard or Motley Crue songs/albums, so I can understand people maybe slagging it, but it's absolutely convincing. And I still get excited listening to it.

I'm too cheap to buy CD's new, but I do buy almost all of my music in one way or another. Mostly through used store bins, goodwills, garage sales, ebay etc. I also rent almost everything from the library as a sort of test period with an album before I go spend money on it.

I would buy all my music new if stores would have more sales on it. I'll buy just about anything if it's under 9 bucks.
