Obviously mine is Charlie Watts. I just love how he looks like a nice, old, english gentleman in this picture. He looks slightly toasted as well. It's also here because he's the greatest drummer ever.

I'll add that I also have much love for the below picture of Christy Turlington.

What's the story of your avatar?
السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و ب
It's "The Stove" by Charles Sheeler. I think it's cool.
velocity
I like both of yours, Johnny Bravo. There's a huge billboard of the Turlington as you drive into San Francisco from the east--traffic seems to slow abruptly as it comes into view.

Your new avatar is good too, elastico.

Mine is just the cute Absolut dog (posted here for posterity). Prolly changing it this weekend.

Mine is the flyer I had made up for my radio show last spring

Sad to see one of my favorite NOLA icons will be disappearing from these pages.

My avatar, obviously, is one of the covers for Rammstein's Sehnsucht. My screen name references this album & my love of Pigs in Space (raumschwein = "space pig"). Damn, I'm clever.

My Chuck Knox avatar celebrates me returning to my senses and resolving the inner turmoil and schizophrenia in my football allegiances. I grew up a rabid Seahawks fan, but after nearly ten years in the Bay Area, when the Raiders went to the Super Bowl a few years back, I hopped the bandwagon shamefully. Old school ground game field marshall Chuck reminds me how good it is to be back in the Silver and Blue....

So what made you see the light? One of my best friends from college was a rabid Tigers fan while he grew up & went to college in Michigan, defected to the White Sox when he moved to Chicago, and has started backing the Mariners now that's he's in grad school in Seattle. What the hell? Admittedly, I'm not the biggest sports fan, but I can't imagine switching loyalties from the Bears to the Texans just because I moved down to Houston.

I couldn't imagine rooting for the Texans if I owned stock in them.

Mine is the Pod by Ween. I've been stressed out and have
turned to Ween to even out my edges, so to speak.
it's one crazy mothafuggin album but I loves it.

Plus I love the art, it always puts a smile on my face to see
mean ween superimposed over Leonard Cohen, with a bong strapped
to his mouth. Many people don't know this, but I have a bong
strapped to my mouth whenever I am on the SOMB.

makes me giddy.

It's Mentok the Mind-Taker. I need a new sig though. I've had Mini-Kiss there for years.

You should put an audioscrobbler link in your sig so people can see your listening habits. Seems like you have an intriguing collection.

black jesus here is from LA Laker Lamar Odom's line of apparel, "Son of Man", and is available in t-shirt form. I should buy one of them and wear it around so you folks can recognize me.

normally i have what has been dubbed the BW latino/vato johnny cougar dancing in the street. i was trying to explain to a friend what rockabilly looked like, and this guy showed up in a google image search...although i'm not sure why he was labeled as such. he is a cool man, and i aspire to achieve his indifference.

As someone who only changes his for short stints, keep it. Ooohhheeeeeohhh.

Mine's Aaron McGruder's character Hewy from the boondocks. Pretty much the only one I've had except for a quick shuffle around last month. Last year I added the MST3000 characters to the bottom. One of the best shows ever.
PigSooie
Mine is Petra Haden. I just like her.

Mine is "A Walk to Paradise Garden" photographed by the legendary W. Eugene Smith. Its my all-time favorite photograph.

I bought one of the originals from his son, who runs his foundation. I spent a fortune for it. It hangs directly above my bed.

Great thread idea - I call for mandatory participation, also.

Helmet - that is one superb photograph. I need to check out Smith soon. Everybody else's avatars are great, too.

Mine is just a Google-search image of a tiger. I like tigers. I like cats in general and think they look cute and sweet when they're sleeping. Even a 400+ lb. carnivorous killing machine that can run, swim, climb trees, and ruin your whole weekend just looks fuckin' adorable when sleeping, huh ?

(Nice kitty)

My previous avatar was my nephew and a butterfly landing on his finger. I'd kept that since about 2001 (as a lurker), because I thought "I hardly ever post, and how else are people going to remember me?"

I'm currently looking for a new avatar, but I just saw The Devil and Daniel Johnston and was blown away by it, especially because I hadn't realized that my favorite song from a tape put out in the early '90s by a Replacements-based fan group -- and I have songs on there myself -- was written by Daniel Johnston. The song is "Walking the Cow," and this is the version. The original is here.
kalmia
So, do you people like my avatar?

Mine is Old Angel Midnight, a pastel and ballpoint pen sketch by Jack Kerouac. Partially because it's a pretty little drawing, but mainly because I'm a longtime Kerouac fanboy.

Mine is a picture of former Afghan Whigs/current Twilight Singers frontman Greg Dulli. I'm a fan of his music so I thought hey why not. Sometimes I change things up by using an animated South Park style rendering of me.

Mine is the Russian version of the "Starman" ep.

I like cyrillic
I like Russia
I like Bowie
basically.

I'm going to change it soon I think.

My avatar is the cover art of "The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me" from Brand New, which has been my most-anticipated album for the last three years or so. It comes out Tuesday.

I've listened to the leak a dozen times but am not quite ready to bust out an overall opinion. But the cover art is effing sweet.
MattDrufke
Mine is my son taking during my wedding dinner. With few exceptions, I've always used my avatar as a way to show how fucking adorable my son is and why he's cuter than any of the offspring on this board (sorry to any of you with kids out there, but you know I speak the truth).

What's funny is how absolutely adorable he is and how absolutely hideous I am. The running joke (which my wife hates) is that I'm not the real father. I fear he does not look more like me as the years progress.

that's what they say in the liner notes, that it's a scotch guard mask.
but time and again they've said that was just a joke, and they've never
huffed that stuff.

Wiki:
according to Ween-lore, was written under the influence of Scotchgard, but this was later refuted by Gene and Dean themselves as being "the most slime-bag thing we could think of." The contraption on the album cover is not a Scotchgard inhalation device, but a bong-like device used to send Marijuana directly to the brain by use of nitrous oxide, which was said to leave the user intoxicated for days, but nauseated. The cover of The Pod resembles the cover of the 1975 Leonard Cohen album, The Best of Leonard Cohen, but with Mean Ween (Mark Kramer from Shimmy Disc who played on a couple of tracks on the album and also toured with Ween on the Pod tour) wearing the aformentioned gas mask bong in place of Cohen.

edit:
holy shit! Ween fans, did you know that the guy on the cover, Mean Ween (who plays bass on some of their tracks) is really Kramer, the music producer (who did Galaxie 500, among many others?)

Mine is Host from the band Taak. I don't know anything about this band (although I imagine that they probably sound like 1,000 cats on speed blowing on wax-comb kazoos), but the pic was #1 on this here top 10 list.

It still tickles me. As I've said in past threads, I will not change it until every one on this board involuntarily spits out whatever they're drinking when they finally notice what's going on in the pic. biggrin.gif
