Not a bad movie at all. A little confusing in the middle, but really solid work all around.

If you don't speak Russian you missed the essence of it. The subtitles were pretty lame and don't begin to convey what they were actually sayiing.

Funny, dumb, but not quite Super Troopers. I'd say an improvement from Club Dread, though.

funny story about the matador.
the whole movie was shot here in mexico city so it was awkward seeing the locations they used for the scenes in budapest and manila are actually blocks away from some of the scenes happening in my city, they just used blonde and asian extras respectively. overall i thought it was a pretty meh movie. i wish i could've watched it with my grandmother cos she would've paid for the tickets.

i just saw roger dodger, pretty good film , if a bit short, or long, i was expecting a tighter ending.

Little Miss Sunshine - Was really good. It had a Sufjan Stevens song in it too, how indie-tastic! I recommend this movie though.

Just finished seasons 3 of Mr. Show. Although all the hype from the board is making me a little letdown. Some of the sketches are just pure, unadulterated brilliance, others seem sort of half-baked. Hmm.

Dunno. It's like this:

Plus side:
-PSH is amazing in this role. He totally deserved the Oscar.
-Beautifully set up and shot.
-Dialouge well written

Minus side:
-Drags. The second act is really slow. The first and the third acts are deliberate, but the second just plods.
-Capote. I felt that the filmmakers were trying to manipulate me into feeling something for Capote, trying to make me sympathize with this manipulative bastard. Just like Capote was trying to do with the characters in the film (I assume his life was filled with this sort of behaivour), but it was so heavy-handed I didn't buy it.

Still, it was loads better than Crash and should have won the Best Picture Oscar.

I'll agree to that. Many sketches had me giggling, a select few had me crakin' up, but about 50% of the whole thing just seemed to miss the mark. Plus David Cross may have an easy charisma on camera, but Bob Odenkirk comes off as a rather boring guy trying to be interesting just before he marries a Stepford wife and disappears from the cultural map. He might be a talented writer, but he's not really a solid performer.

Pff-whatever... There might be more to this but it comes off as fairly low grade to me. Circa Kevin Smith quality. Might float your boat but it doesn't do much for me.

Far and few between have I been taken by much that's been released from First Run Features.
They're like the low ball on the totem pole of film release. They rarely pick up something that's gonna go anywhere. Admittedly they're good for docs & foreign stuff cause nobody else bothers putting them out there. The reason they're still in business is probably because of Michael Apted (49UP) & Ross McElwee (Sherman's March/Bright Leaves) In fact I'm kind of surprised they're still around.

last weekend we rented 4 movies:

Broken Flowers
Crash
Walk the Line
The Constant Gardener

I have thoughts on them; problems with Crash, although it's worth seeing, but it's just too over the top for my tastes.

Broken Flowers was really more my speed. I'm kinda getting sick of Bill Murray and the brooding bore he seems to play now, but I still thought this was an excellent movie.

Constant Gardener was damn good, but I was really tired when I watched it and feel like a more awake viewing would have yielded a more definitive response.

Walk the Line was a great biopic. Reese Witherspoon is awesome. She stole the film, in my opinion. She's got nice pipes too. Better than June did. Good movie.

I should've been more clear: I like that Mr. Hickman's son was going to the Foo Fighters with him, and when they couldn't get in suggested they go to the Music Box to see what's there, and then they go to see The Fallen Idol together. Someone's bringing that kid up right. Kudos, Mr. Hickman! Kudos!

An old-school miniseries (1980 broadcast tv) with some old-school effects (ever seen Space 1999? That's Star Wars by comparison). Almost as cheesy as you'd expect, but the story is so good you might find yourself getting pulled in regardless. I'm only about 1/3 the way thru, and there's a Martian erroneously disguised as Jesus telling a priest (played by good ol' sci-fi alumni Fritz Weaver) to "turn away and I'll be gone." Well, I thought it was a cool line for a Christ figure to say. Anyway, if you're into stuff like Dr. Who, Twilight Zone, and other suchlike low-budget sci-fi - then you'll probably dig this. If you like your sci-fi all CGI + whizbang, then, uh, you might want to avoid the Martian Chronicles as a DVD. Check out the book.

Best line so far: "They're a family of 5 - they can take your loss better!"

I first saw Voices Of A Distant Star three years ago, and I thought it was pretty amazing. But that was before I saw, well... pretty much any other anime that mattered. Returning to it now, it doesn't look so good. I mean, for something someone made on their home computer, it's fantastic. The actual art itself (character design, backgrounds) is great. But the animation is static and unconvincing. The more CGI-based scenes look worse. No reason to hate it completely, though. It's a moving drama and a really intriguing premise. But it feels rushed near the end, and the non-ending is kind of a letdown.

The Place Promised In Our Early Days takes the potential of VoaDS and stretches it out to an hour and a half, which is much more suited to Shinkai's somber tone and lush visuals. Thankfully, the animation is vastly improved this time around. More interesting science fiction that gets a little confusing towards the end, with characters risking it all to do something that doesn't really make sense. An overwhelming feeling of homesickness, nostalgia, and melancholy hangs over the flashback/dream-filled film... funny how the characters pine for the good old days of being in junior high with great sadness, when they're only just in high school. But I guess I dig that sort of thing most of the time anyway (Catcher In The Rye, Boards of Canada, etc.) and if you do too, you might enjoy this.

Rule 1: This is the best release I've seen of this extremely low-budget movie. They did a great job restoring the sound + picture.

Rule 2: Do not waste any time on the colorized version. The B+W looks effin' great.

Rule 3: There's only one problem with the whole feature - the film is missing one key piece of history: Jack Nicholson's first line "Is this Dr. Farbes office?" is completely destroyed. Out of all the prints out there, they couldn't find those 3 seconds anywhere? Sheesh.

Rule 5: Audrey Jr. is the most unthreatening pile of paper mache you've ever seen. But it has one great line... "You'll get yours."

Rule 4: If you've never seen this, you're missing out on some good ol' fashioned silliness. The dialogue and chararcters totally make the film. "It grows like the cold sore on the lip."

Hey, I was gonna start a thread on this, but here it is. Some random thoughts: It was definitely worth seeing, and immediately made obvious the obviously political and racial and power-related aspects of what happened. Those were transparent, and this documentary cemented them home.

It was quite wrenching, but could have been even more so in a 90-120 minute version. The interviews all could have been edited without losing meaning, and possibly making them more compelling without the repitition and non-essential details.
Ben
Did he have anything about all the elderly people who died? Statistically, NO's old folks suffered at a much greater rate than its blacks. Although, because of the limited nature of this study, I think it's been overcited as a contradiction of popular conclusions about the storm. And even if we fully accept its conclusions, the data point is unable to overturn facts supporting the case that a primarily black city was neglected for so long.

Assumptions about Katrina victims may be incorrect, data reveal
BY JOHN SIMERMAN, DWIGHT OTT AND TED MELLNIK
Knight Ridder Newspapers

NEW ORLEANS - Four months after Hurricane Katrina, analyses of data suggest that some widely reported assumptions about the storm's victims were incorrect.

For example, a comparison of locations where 874 bodies were recovered with U.S. Census tract data indicates that the victims weren't disproportionately poor. Another database, compiled by Knight Ridder of 486 Katrina victims from Orleans and St. Bernard parishes, suggests they also weren't disproportionately African-American.

Both sets of data are incomplete; Louisiana state officials have released no comprehensive list of the dead. Still, they provide the most comprehensive information available to date about who paid the ultimate price in the storm.

The one group that was disproportionately affected by the storm appears to have been older adults. People 60 and older account for only about 15 percent of the population in the New Orleans area, but the Knight Ridder database found that 74 percent of the dead were 60 or older. Nearly half were older than 75. Many of those were at nursing homes and hospitals, where nearly 20 percent of the victims were recovered.

Lack of transportation was assumed to be a key reason that many people stayed behind and died, but at many addresses where the dead were found, their cars remained in their driveways, flood-ruined symbols of fatal miscalculation.

The addresses where bodies were recovered were compiled by Louisiana state officials and released earlier this month. Knight Ridder charted the locations on a map of Orleans and St. Bernard parishes, then compared them with census data on income in those neighborhoods. The analysis excluded 216 bodies that were recovered from hospitals and nursing homes, as well as 63 recovered at collection points where people had dropped off bodies in the days after the storm; those victims probably came from locations other than the census tracts where they were found.

The comparison showed that 42 percent of the bodies found in Orleans and St. Bernard parishes were recovered in neighborhoods with poverty rates higher than 30 percent. That's only slightly higher than the 39 percent of residents who lived in such neighborhoods, according to the census data.

Similarly, 31 percent of the bodies turned up in areas with poverty rates below 15 percent, where 30 percent of the population lived.

The median household income in neighborhoods where Katrina victims were recovered was about $27,000 a year, just under the $29,000 median for the overall area.

One-fourth of Katrina deaths fell in census tracts with median incomes above $35,300. One-fourth of the area's pre-storm population lived in tracts with median incomes above $37,000.

About 67 percent of the mapped deaths fell in the central and western portion of New Orleans, an area thought to have flooded primarily because of the failure of man-made structures.

The separate Knight Ridder database of 486 Katrina victims was compiled from official information released by state and federal authorities and interviews with survivors of the dead. It cataloged deaths according to location, race, age, name and cause of death.

In that database, African-Americans outnumbered whites 51 percent to 44 percent. In the area overall, African-Americans outnumber whites 61 percent to 36 percent.

In Orleans Parish, 62 percent of known Katrina victims were African-American, compared with 66 percent for the total parish population. In St. Bernard Parish, 92 percent of the identified victims were white. Census figures show that 88 percent of parish residents identified themselves as white.

Among hurricane victims on the Knight Ridder list, men outnumbered women 51 percent to 49 percent, about the same as in the overall area before the storm.

It's implied but not addressed outright. I was particularly struck by the repeated interviews of a guy who convinced his mother to leave her home to head to the Superdome in hopes of getting on the allegedly soon-arriving buses and his account of her death while waiting and what happened to her body after dying, including his being denied access to her body to say goodbye despite the body being then left outside for several days after the Superdome evacuation. Also, the scenes in which people return to their former homes are pretty gut-wrenching, for me at least.
