I liked it, but not as much as I expected to. I guess I expected it to be an impact film, but maybe that's more of a generational issue.

Olivia D'Abo was so cute in the flashback scenes. And Perrey Reeves! wub.gif

Very fun movie. Great chase scenes. Good action. Story isn't very original, but you're watching this movie for the action.
Rent it!

Having a daughter, this movie scared the crap out of me. They did a great job of showing how shit rolls downhill.

Weak 1974 movie (from Neil Simon's play) tries to mine laughs out of urban ennui, unemployment and depression. This was too depressing, I gave up halfway in.

... What a strange little show this is. But I keep watching....it reminds me of myself (a little) as a whacked-out kid, growin' up with a single mom (no other siblings, tho) and dreaming of being George Lucas. Granted, I never had a video camera... but the attitude was there, man.

Paula Poundstone is great in this, and altho the animation style isn't one than I'm fond of (that minimalist [i]Dr. Katz[/] wiggly line thing is quite ugly, really) I will def. be watching how this show will unfold over the next 4 seasons.

They get rid of the Squigglevision in the 2nd Season (I think, if it isn't then it is pretty close to it). They switched to animating the show using Flash because it was cheaper and wouldn't give everyone headaches.

I enjoyed it, though I don't think it's quite at the level of Oldboy. Then again, what is?

I like how Park Chan-Wook uses many of the same actors in his films, even if only for a cameo.

It's another Park Chan-Wook movie. I'd rank it right up there w/Oldboy

As much as I was lead to believe the christian right were shoveling the uber-funds into pressing
some mass conversion with the release of this film (ex. I loved it. It was better than 'CATS'. I'm going to see it again and again..) I was downright befuddled by just how meaningful this could really possibly be.

Thus far it seems that the CGI effects are up to par and while this rides on the coat tails of two other successful series. I can't say it was foul nor beating me over the head into submission.
Merely entertaining but hardly that impressive in comparison to the other recent fantasy epics.

I was hoping to find some Michael Medved quote from a review but I don't even know if he reviews movies anymore. I'm sure he would object to the sharp sticks.. rolleyes.gif

Not a rental-- it was on WYCC last night, and since I'd never seen it, I watched it. Pretty cornball stuff, but entertaining. Never knew you could kill a man from 200 yards just by flicking a handgun and firing a blank.

IPB Image
Never seen this one either. Good times. Welles is a little over the top when he says "Old Man" and "Dear Fellow" when he addresses Joesph Cotton but that's the way it goes. The ending shot is gorgeous.
Ben
Haha. I love that "old man" shit.

Went to our Landmark theater here with a coworker. I had a personal first. I was heckled.

One of my bad habits is that I tend to laugh during movies at inappropriate times, usually at stuff I think is ridiculously cheeseball (ex. Steve Martin pouring out his heart for the 27th time in Shop Girl). Typically, I just get dirty looks on the way out from people who were taking the movie seriously.

But not this time.

When Ed Norton calls in a gang of identical Chinese magicians as backup, yeah, that crap is so bad it's hilarious. I swear to God that like a half dozen cookie cutter dudes come sweeping out of a wagon and into the back of his theater. ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET...LIKE CALGONE! Oh man, I just busted up. And then 30 seconds later this dude behind us starts mocking my laugh to impress the women he's with. Ed Norton was avenged. Then I see him after the movie and it's not a teenager but a 40 year old frumpy dude. Haha. It's just like the movie's tag line sez. NOTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS!

Even Paul Giamatti couldn't save this one. Ed Norton is so over. The other ridiculous thing is that the movie takes great pains to point to scientific explanations for the movie's magic tricks. But the stupid things are all made with CGI.

Love that film. The best of its kind.

The scene where the bomb goes off in the ocean - and winds up being a bigger blast than anyone anticipated - is awesome.

Wanna see something even scarier? Watch how the American Government sold the idea of the bomb to the American Public thru a fantastic propaganda machine in:

IPB Image

What's so damn scary about this is the fact that for all it's obviousness, for all it's blatant understating of the dangers of the bomb - it worked. People believed in "duck and cover" thinking. And the pop culture jumped on board with some of the most bizarre lyrics ever recorded (Bill Haley singing about being the only guy left in a town after the war, surrounded by 13 women is my personal favorite).

Check it out. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this one.

I'm hesitant about this. I love the british office and when the american one started I watched probably the first six episodes and was severely disappointed. But lately people have been telling me (people, that is, that loved the BBC version and were also disappointed by the American version) that it gets a lot better after the first season.

Should I give it a second chance?

Agreed. The first season had its moments but was not really something that made me think the series had a spectacular future ahead of it. Season two turns it up and is funnier, weirder, and well worth your viewing time.

Speaking of the BBC original, it's been a couple of years since I've watched it. I'll have to snag that from my brother and watch it in the near future.

This movie has a very slow start, but an excellent pay off.
Not up to Oldboy, but still damn good!
Tony
'The Departed' is perfunctory, impersonal filmmaking. Scorsese is good at intense encounters that erupt in unexpected violence or humor and/or both. He doesn't sustain long form narrative very well. You could rearrange most of the scenes from the middle of this film and it wouldn't have made a lick of difference. And the last shot is embarrasing.
Ben
Tony, you thought The Aviator was genius though, right?

One more reason to love Deadspin:

From today's NFL wrap-ups:

QUOTE
• Matt Leinart had quite a successful debut... finishing 22-of-35 for 253 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Unfortunately, Neil Rackers can't have any coffee, because he can't close. He missed a 51-yarder at the buzzer, and made the efforts of Leinart all for naught. The loss hurts, but... hey, Leinart looked good. When you root for the Cardinals, it's the little victories that count. 23-20, Chiefs.

That's how I like my movie references. Sly, funny and on point. Nicely

If that were the criteria then The Departed would be a masterpiece as it has one reference after another to this or that movie...mostly older Scorsese movies. The Aviator had some problems but at least it had a sense of committment. But here it honestly feels like he's just going through the motions.
