Is this any good? I've been meaning to see it (as I've been meaning to see every Chris Walken movie)

The only way to answer this is no, it's not good, and you need to see it.

slackmo's response is entirely accurate. there are some great lines and memorable scenes, but ultimately the movie is quite lackluster.

Was nothing at blockbuster last night (really wanted "Jesus Camp"), so I broke down and finally rented this:

IPB Image

Wasn't a great movie, but was much better than I expected. I think that in the wake of "Wedding Crashers", the producers/director may have felt the need to make a quirky/light comedy, but it's actually a pretty serious drama about relationships...and very often the movie was just uncomfortable and hit way to close to home in it portrayal of relationship breakdowns (that actually a compliment). The result is that sometimes the tone of the movie is just way off (pretty much all the supporting characters except John Favreau sucked); but many of the scenes between Anniston and Vaughn are very good.

So it wasn't a great movie, but better than I expected.

Awesome, awesome film. I had absolutely no idea what the outcome of the movie was going to be until about 15 minutes from the end. Maybe even just 10 minutes. Highly recommend it. It's too ridiculous to pass up.

Edit: Just read the synopsis on Netflix. Was Flightplan a direct ripoff? I never saw it, but the plot sounds exactly the same.

Caught this damn near by accident, and it was pretty fantastic. Highly recommended for fans of Gattaca, Eternal Sunshine, or Winterbottom in general, who might just be the most interesting director working these days. Great cameo from a SOMB favorite that I refuse to spoil.

Not as terrific as I wanted it to be. The little interview segments with Cohen were interesting, but some of the performances were a little weak.

Antony, Rufus, and Nick Cave were all very, very good, though.

The U2 bit at the end was less than inspiring, for whatever reason.

Well, I said *good* comedies. I thought Beer Fest sucked.

I've commented on both Beerfest and Beer League in this thread (probably should be a little ashamed); and:

Beer Fest >>>>>Beer League

I'm a huge Stern and Artie Lange fan, but Beer League was just bad on so many different levels. That's not to say Beer Fest was great...it's a mediocre renter and exactly what you'd expect it to be, but it did have some very funny moments (and definitely had more funny scenes than Beer League).

To call this a bad Tarantino ripoff is an insult to that mediocre sub-genre. I want my $8.50 back. The only unannoying characters are played by non-actors Common and Alicia Keys.

Beer Fest was pretty good. It's advertised like a dumbass titty movie (which is what I'm assuming Beer League is) but it's really not. I can see if you were looking for something more along those lines, you were in for a disappointment. It's another funny Broken Lizard effort with a ton of funny, quotable lines.

There is so much about this cover that makes me not want to see it. Just the cover and the title and the quotes from the reviews all together... it's an amalgamation of terrible.

I know you're not supposed to judge a film by its cover but sometimes they just make it so hard.

This film did nothing for me. I typically like Soderbergh, but this didn't excite, interest, or mortify me. It was just there.

I'm really excited to see The Science of Sleep next week. I have it on top of my Netflix queue, so I'll have to make sure I send something back over the weekend, then they'll get it on Monday and hopefully send that to me for Tuesday.

You know how the only reason to watch early Jackie Chan movies is for the fight scenes? Well, the only reason to see Busby Berkely movies is for the musical production numbers...there's only 4 in this one (and a couple of sappy ballads), but worth the wait through a silly romantic plot. Gene Kelly's classic MGM flicks and music videos of the 80s all start back here with Berkeley's WTF fever dreams of experimental camera angles and overly lavish concepts. The Lullabye of Broadway number, in particular, is amazing...and surprisingly dark.

The Devil Wears Prada--
Quite predictable through and through, but you could do worse. Streep has fun with her icy Amanda Priestly. Stanley Tucci is great as the friendly gay guy, because he doesn't play his role all queeny the way movies like this usually handle such a character.

Here's what happens when your writing/directing team are two dp's hopped up on Mountain Dew. Unrepentantly disposable and aggressively contrived, it's a fun little ride with a couple of absolutely hilarious (and, surprisingly, intentional) moments. Good tuneup for Smokin' Aces.

Once again, nothing at blockbuster, so I finally sat down and watched this:

IPB Image

It was ok, and had some very funny moments. I think they did just about at much as they could possibly do with the premise, but there's really only so much you can do (and unfortunately I think any potential for camp was stripped by all the pre-game hype). That being said, the film ran about 1:45, which normally wouldn't be too long; but this film had a lot of fat and could easily be trimmed down to 90 minutes.

It didn't tell me much I didn't already know. Reinforced my belief that the MPAA is a censorship comittee.
