Sorry, the 1953 version of War of the Worlds (though I guess the same statement could apply to Spielberg's version too)

Sean Penn's greatest role?

Absolutely. He slept, ate, and drank (and very likely smoked smile.gif ) as Spicolli during the filming of the movie, per Cameron Crowe & Amy Heckerling's DVD commentary.

Sweet & Lowdown might be his second best.

Harrowing to watch, but well acted and the actors look convincingly unglamorous.
Maggie got a lot of mileage out of the braless halter top look.

I dug it. I dug it pretty hard. Might buy it tomorrow while I'm out.

Also, I find myself strangely attracted to Charlotte Gainsbourg and unsure how to reconcile such feelings. Perhaps I'll download her album.

So much of the plot just seemed to be built around or borrowed from other roles/moments in different films. Don't get me wrong. It's funny and fairly well cast but I wasn't really won over.

And I'm not really sure that Abigail Breslin, cute as she is, deserves a Best Supporting Actress nomination, either.

Yeah she was good...but nominee worthy???? That's a stretch. Academy always seems to have a soft spot for good performances. It also really likes actors who play cripples/retards; and actors who do an impersonation in a biopic.

Nominating a young actor for one of the supporting actor spots is practically an Oscar tradition. I don't have a problem with this, I think it is good for the telecast to have a wide eyed youngster all dressed up and everything, being escorted to the show by his/her mother, *sniff* *sniff*.

The show is too long already, and you don't want it to turn into the Grammy's with an award for everything, but having a Best Young Actor award would not be a bad thing.

Astoundingly boring, sentimental pap. Try to imagine Saving Private Ryan with somehow more two-dimensional characters, no novelty, a flatter color palette, less pathos, and the woebegotten bookends are longer and preachier.

This was pretty spectacular, though it kind of fizzles out instead of actually, you know...ending. Awesome to hear Bernal speak English, especially as he's insanely winning and/or charming.
Andyroo
Yeah, I definitely wanted more from the ending, though I was very impressed overall by it. I didn't have time to watch it again tonight, but I plan to take it in again over the next couple days.

I also have Gondry's Human Nature coming from Netflix today. Hadn't even heard of it before.

Finished this last night, hilarious in a completely different way than the american version. Too bad it's not as kid-friendly, my little brother would love it.

It was good, maybe really good, I can't say I wasn't a bit disappointed by the lack of a big ending moment.

Brilliant in every way. Stupendous, stunning, amazing. Perfect. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

Well, I think "Touch Me, I'm Dick," in essence, speaks for itself, you know. I think that, you know, that's basically what the song is, um... about... is about, you know... I-I think a lot of people might think it's actually about, you know, "My name is Dick, and, you know, you can touch me," but, I think, you know, it can be seen either way.

I also watched a terrible movie called Freakshow. Possibly the goriest movie I've ever seen. Can't find any pictures online and imdb shows a 2007 release date while the DVD case says 2006. Whatever. Don't rent it unless you're really into special effects make-up.

That good a setup with that deliberately muddled a follow through makes the whole thing a 1/2-star movie. Avoid at all costs.

This is a curious review. With an 'A+' start and a 'F' of an ending. I'd think you'd refer to an average of a 'C' instead of an avoid at all costs? Perhaps you could elaborte on what made the beginning so amazing and how it went to hell exactly...

Bunch of guys commit a crime, wind up in a wearhouse, accuse each other of being a mole, pull their guns out at each other at the same time, yell at each other to put their guns down, then everyone dies in an orgy of gunfire?
