^ yeah. Good movie but not the best this year. Could have been but there are two moments that just really sucked imo, and almost ruined the movie.

only two? which ones?

The two parts that really got me are when they through the guy off the roof and he landed right in front of Leo (that blood spurt was ridiculous), and the ending shoot-out thing. Those are the moments where I had to look away from the screen. Horrible.

Right on. Can't think of better examples of why the film is somewhat overated. Still glad to see Scorcese get some due.

Both parts, (not the spurt) are wholesale from the original.

I've sat and watched a few hours worth on PBS because nothing else was on my plate at the time. It's not a bad show by any means, if you can just let your mindset go towards the historical timeframe that it takes place in and forget about your typical modern-age TV drama. I don't like it enough to buy it, but to each his own.

Worth finishing? I watched the first four or five episodes when it was first being fansubbed, but I didn't keep up with it after that.

Watched this last night. Pretty cool action, but I wasn't especially blown away by it. I've got House of Flying Daggers on Blu-ray from Netflix still. May watch that tonight or tomorrow.

Paranoia Agent is totally worth finishing. How could you not have already? That thing is as addictive as lost. I remember serious pangs of waiting for more episodes.

I liked Fearless a lot more. HOFD is kinda disappointing.

THIS will be super-high in the mid-year correction. I just finished watching it, so I might be overrating it on account of it being fresh in my mind, but, right now, I have it as #2 on the best of the year. Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles is a breathtakingly beautiful film about a Japanese man trying to reconnect with his ill son by travelling to China to film a folk opera he'd wanted to see. Epic scenery, quietly brilliant "small" performances (Not small people, but not overblown obvious "acting"), and a deeply moving story. As good as Zhang Yimou's martial arts pics have been, THIS is the movie I've been waiting for him to make since 1999's The Road Home.

I watched this last night:

For some reason I had pretty high expectations. It was decent...had some very funny moments, but wasn't great. (small spoiler alert ahead):

The opening music sequence might have been the best part. Meatloaf as Jack Black's dad, some kid doing a very good Jack Black impression, and Ronnie James Dio coming to life out of a poster.

My at the time teenaged brother and I got all into Miike a couple of years back, based almost entirely off of Happiness of the Katakuris (Still my favourite Miike by a mile) and we rented this one night. I decided to kind of preview it before we watched it, and boy am I glad I didn't watch it with him, that would have been an unsettling hour and a half. I liked some of this, especially the completely off-the-wall, yet somehow tender ending. I got a little lost in the dialogue, at times, but might watch it again some day, I remember it having quite a bit to say about reality TV.
Artem
as i understood it was shot for the purpose of being shown on a japanese tv. not sure if it ended up there on not though, but that was the original purpose i think.

i read about the film before watching it, cos they guy who gave it to me sort of scared me with what i should be expecting from the film. i was thinking it would be another crazy gory revolting japanese movie. shocking for the sake of turning people mad. but the director really did a good job on it. i mean it was kind of revolting and sick at times, but it was very realistic/naturalistic. probably the effect of it being a a reality tv thing helped it. it was very soothing in the end. just a good feel about all the crazy things working out in the end. i think its very hard to achieve that kind of effect on the viewer when you start your film with a scene where a dad has sex with his daughter.

Idiocracy--Mike Judge deserves a lot of praise for this. A HUGE amount of praise.

The Science of Sleep--sweet wackiness, but the ending left me hanging.

Stranger Than Fiction--I got the literary humor more than my wife did. Very well done, it's not just another "Adaptation". Queen Latifah cashed in her paycheck by standing around. I wished we were told who the author was a little bit later...and wished we understood why she was such a basketcase. Best cookie-eating scene ever, I got hungry.

Maybe I'll help by taking you down a peg. For what Judge had to work with, it succeeds on the satire level. There's a decent reason why so much of the movie is stupid...mainly because of its characters being stupid... but was also surprisingly heartwarming towards the end. Enjoy it.

chantal goya in m/f is just irresistable. all the facial expressions she makes throughout the film, and the dialogue in the bathroom where she's smiling and combing her hair. that's just too much.

One of the best pairings in film; Chantal Goya and Jean-Pierre Léaud. This quote just killed me:

"Love, love in the heart of man is solitude
And your face thrown back over the brown of my female nakedness
And my love is in the sea in dreams
And here we are against death."

I ask because several people (all who have reasonable taste) have said the same thing, but can't give me a good reason. Streep was good, but the story was so predictable that I didn't care what happened.
