Wow. For some reason, I expected this to be at least mildly entertaining. (Didn't this make SOMB's favorite films of the 70s?). What an mind-numbingly boring, incoherent piece of shit.

Nah, man - Mad Max is OK from a historical perspective only. I enjoy it, but it's not nearly as good as its sequel, the Road Warrior. RW has superior everything - from costume design all the way down to the photography (which is actually quite excellent). Trust me.
Plus, it's got this guy:

I still find it incredible these movies came from the future director of the Babe movies and Happy Feet. (the way it's weird how Bob Clark, the director of Porky's and that Santa-slasher movie also made A Christmas Story)

Dr. George Miller born George Miliotis March 3, 1945, Chinchilla, Queensland, Australia

Became a practicing physician until, after a film course at Melbourne University he teamed up with Byron Kennedy to make Violence in the Cinema, Part 1 (1971)

Not to be confused with the director of The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990)

Warner Bros. gave him the rights to Mad Max 2 (1981) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) to get him to step aside as the director of Contact (1997).

Raised money to make Mad Max by working as an Emergency Room Doctor.

Theatrical features:
Happy Feet (2006)
Babe: Pig in the City (1998)
40,000 Years of Dreaming (1997)
Lorenzo's Oil (1992)
The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) (segment 4)
Mad Max 2 (1981)
Mad Max (1979)

have you read "the karnau tapes" by marcel beyer? it describes those event that you mention in the spoiler. it's short but rather interesting:

QUOTE
A sound engineer obsessed with voice (and in fact all sonar phenomena) and the eight-year-old daughter of propaganda minister Goebbels are the main protagonists in this rather grim World War II novel. Herr Karnau, a "smooth, blank wax disc when others have long since been engraved with countless grooves," records all vocal ranges, from rally whoops to death rattles (while studying the tongues and aural passages of severed animal heads). He meets little Helga when surprisingly asked to mind the Goebbels children for a few days. They are also together in Hitler's bunker for the last days of the Reich, as Karnau adds der Fuhrer's stressed voice to his archives. Karnau survives, later to comment on the archives in 1992 as a "retired security man"

Possibly the best Bond installment since the 70's Roger Moore era.
It relied much less on gadgets and far-fetched stunts, and much more on the characters and storyline.
Recommended.

This is the common wisdom on this film, but I (mostly) don't buy it. I thought the stunts were equally far-fetched as any Bond film. The opening construction site chase, the airport car chase, and the ending fight in the sinking building were all outlandish. Not as realistic as the Bourne films, which were said to have been the model for the more "realistic" Bond. Although I'll grant your they were a little less silly than the previous Bond film, such as the parasurfing away from the collapsing glacier. More realistic than previous Bonds is faint praise.

The gadgets were a bit toned down. No invisible cars. But you still had the Jack Bauer model miracle cell phone and the medical tracking implant, verified by portable xray scanner.

We were also promised less double entendres, which got out of control and pretty silly with Halle Berry. But I thought some of the dialog in Casino Royale got pretty silly at times, particularly the scene in the train.

I still enjoyed the film tremendously, but just as much as the Pierce Brosnan Bonds. Where I was disappointed was in the realism claims made in marketing the picture, which led me to believe that the film would be more like "From Russia With Love." The film was more like "For Your Eyes Only", the Roger Moore pic that was said at its time to be a return to a more "realistic" Bond.

George Miller only directed 'Babe: Pig in the City' which has been called his best feature.

Miller produced and wrote Babe and was rumored to have had a hand in the directing, although it was credited to a pal.

i didn't catch on until the final season...I too should've listened to those in the know.

HBO has been cycling through the seasons by making them available On Demand, however it's a terribly slow process. we'll get 6 episodes at a time, for about a month. once those are gone its usually another 3-4 weeks before the next 6 are available. we're 1/2 way through Season 3 right now.

& captivating is the perfect word.

I'm not sure whether to just say that Albert Brooks is just not funny anymore or whether to say that he never was funny at all. I tend to find a chuckle here and there in most of his stuff but he's never ever blown me away and here there's a few moments that could have worked out here but instead of building on them he lets it go.

land of the dead

I had some high hopes for this latest Romero revisiting of the zombie trail. it gets pretty heavy handed in pushing the war of the social classes undertones.. well, if you can call it that.

best scene: guy gets confronted with what appears to be a headless zombie. only the heads still attached and it flips up like a pez dispenser and bites the guy.

Dennis Hopper was phoning it in. the role could've been played by Burt Reynolds and it would have been equally as poor. it's strange how Romero has always succeeded with lesser known folks in his casting and using headliners like John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper just doesn't do much.

Also, it's funny to think that he's responding to another zombie flick (28 days later perhaps) to suggest that the zombies are getting smarter.

what can I say. if you catch this on cable it might be worth watching but don't go out of your way to be underwhelmed.

Were a lot of films last year better?
Fair question. I'm actually not sure--given that my son was born in the end of 2005, I didn't see a lot of films last year, and I certainly didn't keep careful track of which ones I thought were best. But it's not the best film I've seen this week (I would put it just below Pursuit of Happiness, for example), so I would certainly hope there were at least a few. And some critics went a lot further--one claimed that it was the "first genuine masterpiece of the 21st century". That's definitely hyperbole in my book.

Obviously, I don't attach the same importance to the visual aesthetics of a film that you do (or that I assume you do based on your past comments)--if that was only standard I was judging by, I might think (even) more highly of the film. But, for my taste, its juxtaposition of the thoroughly evil Capitan and the romanticized rebels rings a bit hollow. Instead of Ofelia's fairy tale world providing an escape from an adult world that is not just cruel, but far too complex for a child to fully understand, it merely reflects a world where the line between good and evil is clearly drawn, even in a time of war. It is a fairy tale for adults, and I don't think that's an entirely good--much less timely--thing.

I've loved this movie since it came out, but hadn't seen it in about 10 years. Some of it hasn't aged real well, and I always thought the ending was a little hoakey....but Bill Paxton makes this movie worth every dime...especially the bar scene.
