(based on the novel by Gunter Grass, Artem)

should I read the book? i mean, i was pretty weirded and impressed by the film, considering that German cinema leaves me unimpressed most of the time.

The film was surprisingly faithful to the novel. Honestly, I can't remember the ending of the novel or the film. Tin Drum is the only Gunter Grass I have read...he seems to specialize in bleak political allegories.

i just watched 'children of men' for the second time and damn if that isn't the best movie i've seen in years.

I have to see this. I remember back when I was in college and "Billy" became the first (and only??) guy ever to play a perfect game of pac-man (or was it ms. pac-man?). Props to Billy for referring to himself in the third person.

Zim is still a running favorite, especially to watch with my little brother.

Very quotable for a cartoon that only ran like 45 episodes.

Currently our favorite line is "I Was the Turkey the WHOLE TIME!!!"

The bologna episode rocks.

Well, the current US dvd version of My Life to Live is out of print. I can only hope for a tasty Criterion release.

the media library at our department got this box set recently, which i borrowed for this weekend. very excited!

so far i've watched two out of four films which are on it.

Pepi, Luci, Bom

Almodovar's first feature. very punky in its attitude. all kind of sexual weirdness. masochism, women peeing on each other, transsexuals, of course. weird, and rather different from the kind of films Almodovar would start making later. although, there's that emphasis on female characters and all that type of stuff.

What have I done to deserve this?

more traditional Almodovar. disfunctional family story. good film. you have to watch it to see Almadovar sining an opera to a dude in a drag. awesome!

i mean traditional if you compare it with his previous film. traditional to his style, not saying traditional as in general filmmaking.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just find it funny to think Almodovar has a traditional aspect to his films, which he does, but still...

Yeah, I thought it was hilarious. It's so absurd; the neurotic mother, the distant father, the crackhead and sex selling kids, and fuck.. the grandmother. I've only seen it once, and that was awhile ago. Good movie.

Wicker Man 2006

Most misunderstood movie of the decade? There was absolutely nothing to it. No suspense, no mystery, no humor, no drama, no romance, no character development, no plot. And yet it was absolutely fascinating to watch. The filmmakers clearly knew what they were doing: Everything was just so intentially over the top and bizarre, yet they managed to pull it off with a straight face. Incredibly entertaining movie, this needs to become at least as big a cult classic as the original. Nic Cage karate-kicks a teenage girl down a hill while wearing a giant bear suit. Amazing.

Okay, between the bear suit and the Neil LaBute curiosity factor, I might have to give this a chance.

Rocky Balboa

There are many cringe inducing cheesy moments in this film, not the least of which is the training montage that Sly perfected back in the 70's. During the entire movie I was hoping that Rocky would die in the ring.
By the time the fight comes around there was a point where nostalgia took over and I was hoping that Rocky would win. That feeling was quickly erased by the awful lines the actors were forced to say.

Avoid this movie.

For some reason I was hoping this was a preview for a "Rocky Balboa Christmas Special," something I could play between the "Star Wars Holiday Special" and the 2006 live action remake of Rankin/Bass' "The Year Without a Santa Clause."

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry

"Not as good as a remembered from my childhood.
Susan George could never get a job in movies today, her teeth are a mess. But she did look damn good in the denim halter top.

At least Vic Morrow had the good sense to do the helicopter scenes from inside the helicopter in this movie.

worth watching if you stumble across it on cable"--TJenz

"Dirty Mary" is classic. I re-watched it a while ago, and I disagree, it holds up-- as long as you realize that you are watching a 70's car-chase film with nothing very much to say. (Dude, this film set the stage for Smokey & the Bandit, the Blues Brothers, et al.)

FTR, the end scene is one of the best in its era. Think about it.

This was pretty dark and tough to watch at times. But like a car accident, you couldn't take your eyes off of it.
It also contained some great archival footage of the 13th Floor Elevators - even one clip being announced by Dick Clark on American Bandstand!
Roky's mother was almost more disturbing to watch than Roky. Her home fairy tale movies that she made as a legacy to her children were positively surreal.
Roky's fingernails are sure to give you the willies. And the man sure like his antennas!
