Has anyone on the board been to the Cinematheque Theatre? There's a few shows I'd like to catch, but I don't know if I should bother spending my moneys heading all the way up North.
Are you talking about facets?
It's a nice little place. I'll probably be there a fair amount next weekend. the director is a friend of a friend.
Yep, facets. What is it exactly? A movie store
and theatre?
It used to be more of a movie store, but they have such a large selection, there's not much of a store now. It's like netflix, but you walk up and tell them what you want, and they go get it. They only have about 5,000 cases on display, so it's not a big browsing store.
And they have a little 100 seat screen in the back. And they have classes.
August 30th they're starting kamp katrina, a verite doc about a woman who opens her yard to people who lost their homes in Katrina. It played at SXSW, won best doc at IFFBoston. It'll play here next year. I'm trying to get them to sign that and their previous movie with Cinema Obscura.
So, it's great, but, it is fairly depressing.

The Son by Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne
i saw this movie on stylus's list of the best films of 2000-2005 and decided to give it a try. it's about a guy who works with teenagers who just got out of jail. one of his new students turns out to be someone who killed his son and went to jail for it.
very interesting camera work in this film. it's often very close to people's faces and gives the movie a certain feel of anxiety. that was probably my favourite thing about that film. but overall it wasn't that great.

It's a funny movie. Like Zero Effect, it's a mainstream film sadly destined for not much more than cult status. And yeah, the whole "I know this is a movie" narration might seem a bit obvious and played-out, but man, is it just a massively entertaining, endlessly quotable little film.

I'd still probably rank it as one of my favorite movies of the last 2 years. It only gets better upon repeat viewings, and whoever recommended the commentary track upthread is spot on. Normally I get bored with those, but Kilmer, Downey and Black have great chemistry.
It's the kind of film that I watch, and get dumbfounded that "Wild Hogs" can gross $100 mil+ while KKBB is relegated to cult status. I mean KKBB is a smart movie, but it's no subtitled fellini flick...and it still has a ton of action, tits, humor, and gay jokes. How is that film not making money?

StardustHey - this is surprisingly good. I'd call it the sleeper hit of the summer. It doesn't waste time with a lot of setup, just launches into the story full-steam ahead. Excellent performances all around, solid effects + photography. All in all, a genuinely good adaptation of Neil Gaiman's fascinating fairy tale. inside man
I guess to sum it all up there's major issues with the plot. devisive moments where characters are drudged around to literally extend little to nothing about the circumstance and in the end it sort of just leaves off pretty much where it began. stuff happens and people move on.
most of the performances are pretty good. spike continues to plug his favorite tracking-dolly shot and the soundtrack was probably more deserving of a more put together thriller because this one was really no big thrill.

I dunno about the "bricking hard" thing - the film's been out for almost 3 weeks now and the theater was pretty full on a Sunday night.
Hot Fuzz (another entertaining-yet-offbeat film) only lasted 2 weeks out here in Vegas, and I totally expected

It's made $26 million in three weeks, including this past week's pull of $4M. It'll be lucky to pull $35M in its U.S. release, and it cost $70M to make. That's bricking hard.
