How was this? I know much less about Leni Riefenstahl than I should--I've only ever seen Triumph des Willens.

it was rather good. beautiful cinematography. if you don't mind silent films, i think you'll enjoy it. Leni directed some parts of this film, by the way. so, she's not only acting in it.

if you can find a Eureka release of this film it has a really cool musical score. quite enjoyable.

If you haven't seen 'The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl' doc from 94' you should really seek it out. It's worth viewing.

She directed seven feature films. I never did see her last underwater doc but her photography in general is stellar.

Impressionen unter Wasser (2002) ... aka Underwater Impressions (International: English title)

Tiefland (1954) ... aka Lowlands (USA)

Olympia 1. Festival of the Nations (International: English title: literal title)

Tag der Freiheit - Unsere Wehrmacht (1935) ... aka Day of Freedom (USA: video box title)

it was a second dvd in that dvd set that i rented from the library, but i had to return it. i'll probably buy it sometime and will be able to watch the documentary too. more incentive to buy it now.

Thanks for the Riefenstahl recs, folks.

In the meantime, I've been enjoying some lighter fare:

Just started watching season 2. As much as I'm enjoying this, it's only occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. But I never get tired of seeing Julian with a drink in his hand.

Apocalyto

I was fully prepared to hate this movie. Turns out it was a pretty decent flick.
It looked spectacular. The violence was gloriously graphic.

I don't think there is another film maker working today that is putting out better movies in dead languages.

Rent it!

Dude-- I think the only reason this movei didn't more acclaim was because of the "sugar-titting".

Apocalypto was one of the best films of last year. Definitely in my top 10. Maybe even top 5. Gibson's still got it. You just got to look at his art objectively. I think way too many people missed this one.

But then again, I'm always in agreeance with "the devil-man".

You can't be best-man, but I would love it if you would write a toast. And then maybe, throw Goofy into a somewhat large martini glass. Of course, Goofy would have to be dressed up as an olive. (With the pit- of course)

Heston's a sleazy dinosaur which is how he came across onscreen. Affleck may or may not be vacuous, but at least was able to convey a sympathetic character.

I wouldn't go that far, but I'm closer to your camp than I am the thread that was made about it. I laughed (a lot, even), but I was being told by people that this was the kind of movie that would make you lose your shit, and I definitely wasn't there.

All in all, this is a nice movie. I'd grade it a "B" or so.
_jon
Given all the hype I was expecting far more. It did have some laughs, but nothing too memorable. It was just campy humor with a downhill plot.

Storyline: F+
Acting: C+
LOLS: C+

how do people find the joke "you can scratch my back, but my back is on my dick" funny?!
Pavement Ist Rad
That's not even the line, dude.

"You scratch our backs, we'll scratch yours."
"Well Jules, the funny thing about my back is that it's located on my cock."

And then you can tell by her reaction and the dude's face that his attempt at flirtatious hilarity has failed miserably... gah. It's fucking hilarious, dude!

Whatever, though. You're the guy who seems to think that "intelligent cinema" consists of nothing but foreign films on Criterion, so trying to explain the appeal of a mainstream comedy seems like it would just be an all-out waste of time.
Artem
my interest in cinema goes beyond the releases made by criterion. i just don't think that some sort of a logic word (scratch my back, but back=cock) constitutes a humor. and maybe i'm past that age when you find flirting failings between 16 years olds as funny.

saw these over the weekend:

i think i can see why "il bidone" is rarely mentioned as fellini's best films even in his 50s period. i think the morality and pity were too heavy handled in it. "asphalt" wasn't very good. it was rather dull. just some love/crime story. "cabinet of dr. caligary" had pretty cool sets and the whole theme of psychic ward was rather cool too. reminded me of "sileni" by svankmeyer.

It needed way more cock jokes and less homoeroticism. Does that make sense?

I loved that line. Just saw Superbad last night. Laughed my ass off.
It's certainly not an art film, but damned entertaining. It was much better than the overrated The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Anyone see the new Resident Evil? Haven't seen the first two, but something about the combination of Milla Jovovich (yum!) and post-apocalyptic Vegas backdrop makes me think it'd be a fun popcorn flick. It's fun to play spot-the-dead-Casino during the trailer, at any rate.

I was explaining this exact sentiment to Bob Loblaw this past weekend. I never gave any thought to seeing the first two, but this one seems oddly mandatory.

Alien: Resurrection - the Special Edition from the Quadrology box set

I really dunno why I watched this movie again. I've always hated it, and yet... well... I felt like killin' some time with a lil' brainless sci fi. Gotta admit that the lighting is incredible, and the bonus footage is fairly interesting (the final glimpse of Earth is more fascinating than the entire movie). Joss Whedon as writer definitely shows the beginnings of the whole Firefly concept (which is quite possibly why I decided to give this one another look - I haven't seen this film since its release). Possibly the most disgusting third act I've ever seen (not to mention the most ludicrous) but hey... it did successfully kill 2 hours of time whilst I recovered from a quick trip from NYC. Still 100% unrecommended.
