However, the storybooks are much more engaging and many elements are straight-up sinister on many levels (Return to Oz was a more accurate representation of the tone found in the books, altho there's no way anyone will ever be able to utilize the original subject matter since the 1939 film has become such an icon - a safe & polished Hollywood-esque icon, but an icon nonetheless).

Yeah, I heard that in one of the novels the boy hero becomes a girl in the climax ohmy.gif ...L. Frank Baum had to have been smoking the same stuff and had the same kinks as Lewis Carroll....

GOOGLED for clarification: Yeah...Ozma, the princess was raised as a boy...but still, quite an odd turn.

It seems most of the bad reviews are coming from religious nuts who were offended. Check out Rottentomatoes:

Her character was very annoying in Junebug, but since then she's become intriguing to me.

A lot of her clueless-ness from Junebug is carried over to this film, but she's so endearing I can't seem to get annoyed.

It's alright. But I have trouble understanding what the main dude is saying sometimes. Half the shit that comes out of his mouth is nonsense. I mean that literally. He's making shit up like Lewis Carrol with a case of the mumps.

barf. starting with the fact that marty should've won for many other flicks he's produced prior to this were with much better results. this was an over the top remake with nicholson being nicholson per usual. sorry to say I don't share your enthusiam for the flick. it was by the numbers for a scorsese flick. by no means bad but hardly impressive. it should be no surprise that the academy is almost always playing catchup for those its ignored or passed up in the past and that win was no different.

Well, I'd read opinions like this when it was first out and as a result wasn't anxious to see it. So it came as a pleasant surprise how good it is. Yes, Nicholson is a bit much, especially at the beginning. He sort of mellowed or the rest of the cast caught up with him as the story progressed. I'm not saying it's a perfect story or a perfect movie, but the situational tension buildup was pretty great, and unique among the Scorsese films I've seen...I guess I was expecting Deathproof and it was not that. Also, I'd just read his thank-you speech and was happy for him. Sure, he's made better movies, some of which he should have won for--but even though the possibility of him never winning an Oscar was unthinkable, I'm not convinced that this was a gimme.

Let me just assure you that with Egoyan and Polley at the helm, you're in pretty good hands. As I recall, you're a fan of The Sweet Hereafter. You won't be disappointed in this.

I thought Ebert did a credible job reviewing this.

In the last week:

Contact
1408 (this completely falls apart around the time he wakes up on the beach)
Half Nelson (even better the second time, although more depressing than I remembered.)
Bridge to Terabithia (a horrible cheesy kids movie with some real emotional impact)
You Kill Me (pretty funny)
Annie Hall (this was hilarious, which Woody Allen movie should I go to next?)
Layer Cake (I don't have time to watch it again and figure out his name, anybody want to clue me in on the answer/solution?)
Talk to Me (very good, Cheadle is fantastic)

Up tonight:

Live of Others
Into Great Silence

Up later this week:

Paris, Je'taime
Extras Season 2
A Mighty Heart
The Wind That Shakes the Barley

Also, out of curiosity, anybody seen This Is England? Don't know if it's out yet but the trailer was fantastically intriguing.

idiocracy

I think I was just in shock. It's the only way I can explain the overall experience of sitting through this.
The idea that a society could possibly continue to exist much less be self-maintained given that there wasn't enough brain cells to rub together to get anything done just doesn't add up if you're more likely to think about it at all. Then again I suspect this was some stoned out dream that Mike Judge had about what if everyone behaved like beavis and butthead... in reality it's just a real dim bulb. Some goofy ass shit in a sophomoric kinda way but not one that's easilly shared.

Annie Hall (this was hilarious, which Woody Allen movie should I go to next?)

I just did a quick imdb review of Allen's directorial output, here's my two-cent ranking:

1.Zelig: mockumentary about a chameleon man. Might have been the inspiration for forest gump...but fg sucks.
2.Annie Hall: don't need to say anything.
3.Crimes and Misdemeanors: Martin Landau's speech at the end is one of the creepiest things ever on film.
4.Broadway Danny Rose: B&W Allen period piece (NYC in the 60's/70's). Mia is great as a garrish Italian mistress.
5.Everyone Says I Love You: Allen's tribute to MGM musicals. Some would say ranking way too high, but I love MGM musicals.
6.Radio Days: Another Allen period piece about, you guessed it... Literally shot in sepia tones, and stars a young Set Green
7.Sleeper: Allen at his quirky best. Probably his best sight gags too.
8.Sweet and Lowdown: fictional account of a jazz guitarist who idolizes real life jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt.
9.Match Point: Woody abandons NYC for London, and does suspense. Phenomenal.
10.Manhattan: To be honest can't remember much, but a young Mariel Hemingway is great.
11.The Purple Rose of Cairo: One of Woody's odes to old films. Fun fantasism abides.
12.Bullets Over Broadway: Woody's return to form after many mediocre films in the 80's and 90's. Chaz Palmentierri (sic?) is the best part.
13.Small Time Crooks: Fun movie, but really a fluff piece for Allen.
14.Manhattan Murder Mystery: Can't remember too much.
15.Husbands and Wives: Can't remember too much
16.Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask: Fun, but mostly schticky.
17.A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy: Like 16. above, but not as good.
18.Mighty Aphrodite: Mira Sorvino got an oscar for this right?, but it's pretty overated.
19.What's Up, Tiger Lily?: Woody Allen overdubs an old foreign movie with his wacky plot. Really only for diehards.
20.New York Stories: This was Allen, Scorcese, and one other director. I didn't like this too much.

Edit: I've only included the Allen films I've seen. Say what you will about the guy, but he certainly is a workhorse.
