The Wire

halfway through the first season. I'm hooked. Too early to delve into the wire thread, though.

You are in for some quality episodes ahead!
st. park

i really liked this.
NumberTenOx

Yeah, it was full of crap, but I enjoyed it anyway.
By-Tor
Deathproof was better than the Rodriguez one.

Oh, and aside from having some of the best clothes-on sex scenes evah, the Nicholson/Lange "Postman Always Rings Twice" is a big disappointment. The whole last act is a huge meandering waster of time. (Sorry, Dave Mamet)

But I guess 5 Easy Pieces has it's dragging moments too, so It's probably rafelson's fault.

^ Congrats to Damo for being open-minded.

Watched this last night.:

I enjoyed this one a lot (but then again, I liked all three films). If I had any complaints, it'd be that the film was about 15 minutes too long, and the Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand camera style did sort of wear on me.

[ The Golden Compass
... Pity, cuz it looks like an interesting story, and on the whole I didn't mind the movie as a bit of 'at-the-end-of-the-day-oh-what-the-hell-why-not?' entertainment. I'm curious as to how much footage will be added to the DVD release...
Stardust was better, IMO.

Ebert gives it 4 stars. Just curious, did you read the book? Most reviewers who haven't read the book say, "It's alright" while those who have generally say, "It's great, even while de-emphasising the anti-religious stuff."

I'm curious to see how things fare in the 2 sequels that will follow this one, and how they address the ambiguously gay angels--and
the death of God
.
Ennui
I just finished watching the "new version" of the original star wars trilogy (the ones in HD). I just need to say WTF @ ep3 anakin showing up at the end of ROTJ along with Obi-Wan and Yoda after Luke wins. They just CGI'ed him right in (the age 18 version, too) without a care for the integrity of the original release.
By-Tor
And this Star Wars geek actually liked it. It's his movie-- it's his conceptual continuity.

3 episodes in and I'm hooked yet again.

It was just as beautiful as I remembered. The score is so amazing, with its faux opera wailing.

Pretty fun movie. I like history and such.

Alright, I have a ton of stuff on my shelf again to watch, and I can't decide. So you all choose what I'm watching tonight. My only preference is toward 2007 stuff, so make arguments for non-2007 stuff a bit stronger:

Manhattan
The Man Who Wasn't There
The Ladykillers
The Hudsucker Proxy
Crazy Love (2007)
Away From Her (2007)
La Vie En Rose (2007)
The Science of Sleep
The Hours and Times (Ok, I really want opinions on this, the subject of it made me pick it up, even though I've never heard of it)

Seen all of these and can recommend them all. Caveat, Manhattan is the more difficult film...and I didn't like the ending of Science Of Sleep.

Saw the latest Harry Potter, and I thought it was good, but actually the least exciting in the series.

A really well-done movie I thought (except for some sketchy CGI creatures at the end). But not at all what I was looking for. This is not your typical Will Smith big-budget action movie. It is a tense, emotional drama set in the construct of this sci-fi concept. I haven't been on the edge of my seat for such a long percentage of a movie since Saving Private Ryan (meaning...the whole time, really). I felt it was really depressing. And not at the end, in the way most movies like this are that I find laughable, but all the way throughout.

Personally, I'd like to hear one good reason why Will Smith isn't up for an Oscar. A reason that doesn't start with S and end with nobs.

For years this remake was in development as an Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle, its backers surely hoping for some of that 'Terminator 2' box office magic. I suspect such magic may elude the film that came to pass. But Smith carries it, even after the story loses its nerve. This film is the opposite of 'Transformers': It's all about the unsettling silence, not the noise. (Michael Phillips)

Smith is a true movie star: He could stand alone before the camera reciting those page-long drug ad disclaimers, and still command our attention. (Stephen Rea)

He may be a little perky to play Earth's loneliest man, but he's more than convincing as Hollywood's nicest guy. (Dana Stevens)

Unfortunately, "I Am Legend" squanders Will Smith's least bombastic, most subtle and restrained performance with shockingly silly, not-at-all-scary special effects (Micahel Machosky)

edit-not to suggest that I'm not curious to see this followup to the directors last outing, 'Constantine' but I'm not getting the overwhelming feeling that his performance matched the quality of the movie. It's certainly not bad reviews but then it's in this apocalyptic/horror/scifi genre that doesn't usually have a lot of crossover audiences.

This comment agrees with me, right? I mentioned some sketchy special effects and a laughable ending, but he was great. Way better than in pursuit of happiness (fuck that movie), and better than Denzel's carbon copy Ohhhhh, he's playing a villain role.

I liked this. Somehow recovers from the worst opening sequence I've ever seen in a movie, coasts along well enough until Scoresby* and bears are introduced. I want more.

*I'm as big of an Anglophile as anyone else here but coming down from 5 Harry Potter films, 3 LotR movies, and other recent fantasy movies (yea, I saw Eragon), I've been overtaken by a private sense of embarrassment to be American, as though my kind is unwelcome and unworthy to be a part of these worlds. So how great is it to finally see an intriguing and -- unspokenly but so obviously -- American character like Scoresby show up in this movie. Sort of redeems my faith in the renewed possibilities of old-fashioned American qualities (however clichéd they might be) within this genre and fills me with a tiny sense of pride.
theremin
It's just the way it is Undo. Fantasy movies are set in the UK or England because they had a longer, richer history. It's hard to have a centuries old building, or event, or whatever, when you've only been here for less than 300 years.

You'll have to balance that out with the fact that most Science Fiction is set in America, cause we're the country of the future (and the one that makes all the movies).

alrighty..

The Wire Season 1 (once you start, you'll be hooked)

The Science of Sleep
The Hudsucker Proxy
Manhattan
The Man Who Wasn't There

The Ladykillers -Should really see the original w/ Alec Guiness & Peter Sellers first. remake is meager but amusing in parts.

The Hours and Times - The Lennon performance is spot on but then the whole thing is kinda tedious after a while and its not that long a flick.

not seen:
Crazy Love (2007)
Away From Her (2007)
La Vie En Rose (2007)
The Luscious Phil

Saw this yesterday. Was really good. I loved the soundtrack at first, but it started to great on me in the end. It was weird for a movie that kept talking about hard rock, that they would constantly use music that was so damn cute and twee.
tjenz

Live Free or Die Hard
it was okay. some completely rediculous action scenes but a fun little flick

Bourne Ultimatum
I didn't remember much from the first two, luckily there was plenty of expository dialogue. I wasn't watching it for the story, just the action. Better action than that die hard movie.

Superbad
If I was still in high school, this is the kind of movie I'd be quoting all day every day. As is I'm still quoting it a lot. Lots of laugh out loud moments where I had to rewind to get the next line.

Yeah, the music thing comment was pretty correct. If her 2 of her favorite bands were the Stooges and Patti Smith, why were there 2 Belle and Sebastian songs playing in the film?

I really liked the dialogue with Page and Bateman about Page defending music that was mostly made before she was born while Bateman's still stuck in the early 90s.

But after it gets over its cutesiness and stops trying to be a female Napoleon Dynamite in the first 15 minutes, it's really remarkable. Every actor turns in a fantastic performance. Every character is sympathetic but also capable saying something cringeworthy. I really found the Bateman and Garner characters captivating. Then again, I too am a washed up musician turned yuppy who just got married.

It's been quite a while since I walked out of a movie so pleased with what I just saw. This was the film that should have been the surprise indie dark comedy that I snuck in with an Oscar nomination.

watched the kite runner last night.
i didn't feel it lived up to the book and felt they left out a major part of the plot at the end.
it was a little long,
they failed to build up the antagonist,
and they flew through the ending,
other than that it was a decent telling of the book.

Fascinating in it's examination of the Japanese obsession with toys, schoolgirls and talking animals. Don't think ti succeeds outright. But kudos for actually trying to figure out why a culture would create tentacle/rape/hentai in the first place.

I watched that (Paprika) a couple weeks back and have since rewatched Perfect Blue and finally watched Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers.

I like aspects of Satoshi Kon's work, but none of his films really grab me on the whole. I quite liked Perfect Blue a few years back, but now it's not quite as intense as I remembered it. Has its moments.
