So this was basically one of me and my brother's favorite movies when we were younger, and I rented it to see if it held up over time. As luck would have it, my bro was in town too so we watched it together and shared a lot of laughs over it. Great film.

Oh yeah, they did a great job. Back to the no nonsense blood simple genre of films. No soundtrack, too! I was in heaven.

testament of dr mabuse (1933)

last film directed by fritz lang before he fled germany because of the nazi occupation. his wife and co-writer also sided with the nazis and stayed behind although their marriage had already dissolved due to her having slept around.

certainly a lost masterpiece of sorts which was restored not too long ago. it carries all the brilliance that german expressionism had to offer. it also has many sequences that have borrowed/bought or stolen for other genre pictures over the years. its stunning to see how much originated from this film from so long ago. masterful.

Watched "Alpha Dog" the other day (it's on cable now) and I must say that not only was the movie pretty good, but Justin T deserves the little acclaim he has gotten for his performance.

Pirates #1 is on ABC right now. You know, I really love this movie. I didn't bother with #3, but I thought that #2 could have been great if they hadn't wasted SO MUCH TIME on stupid action setpieces.

We bought Harry Potter & The order of The Phoenix. Get the 2-disc one for 6 bucks more, just for the docs.

I'm either holding out for a 7-disc boxset in 2010, or at least until the point where the first 5 or 6 DVDs can be found in bargain bins for $10 or $12.

Why do they make box sets for movie series that haven't been completed yet, I wouldn't hire or approve of my child marrying someone who bought such a thing

Actually, I was looking forward to the music. Sharon Jones is on most of the soundtrack CD, with Alvin Youngblood Hart and some other people. There were a few scenes in a jukejoint, and they pretty much stole the show. Still hoping to check out the soundtrack at some point, which looks like it's filled with songs not in the film.

All of these were pretty near perfect. Go see Sweeney Todd as soon as you can, easily one of Burton's best movies yet, saying a lot.

Also this:

Which is now one of my favorite Burton movies ever as well.

I saw "I am Legend" Christmas night and thought it was very good.

Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time.

What the hell is up with Ridley Scott? How in fuck's name does everything he touch look so exquisite? Even one with a lame story like Kingdom of Heaven is beautiful.

What a weird, artistic, wonderful film.

In closing, I love this man

Actually this is a good place to stop, BUT go read book 5. Honestly it is my favorite book ever written. The movie version is solid, but the book does what a movie can't. It just expands the magical world but thousands, and has probably my favorite story of all the books. Plus, her writing just sprawls all over the place, it's messy, and full of random unnecessary details. Honestly, it's probably the only book the only children's book that comes close to the complexities and scope of Russian Literature.

Either way though, you have to see where the story goes.
The Luscious Phil

Just saw this. The screenplay was fantastic, as was Tom Hanks and Seymor Hoffman. Julia Roberts was ok. I wish I could say the direction was as good. Too many stock footage clips used, too many statistics flashed on screen. Too much time passed in the narrative, but the characters never looked older. Either way, I'd give it a B+
Nick

I've just been talking recently about the fact that I think he might be the most overrated director ever.

Alien
Blade Runner
Thelma and Louise
Gladiator
American Gangster.

Wow...that's some overrated shit right there....
