really enjoyed it. it was nice and trippy

A lot of people slagged this flick, but I kinda dug it - plot holes and all.
Of course, it's pretty damn hard to make a time-travel film without plot holes, innit?
12 Monkeys probably came the closest.

Atonement: Wonderful. Had a lot of imaginative elements I wasn't expecting: the way noises in the foreground would become part of the music, like the young girl's typewriter forming the beat to the sweeping orchestral theme, or the way it would show an incident as the girl saw it, then go back to show what really happened. Also, this is the best-looking movie of the year, the first half being all flowers and elegance, with the second half being stark and bombed-out but still gorgeous. The sequence on the beach, which follows the male lead and his two army buddies as they survey a bombed-out city in a long unbroken shot is horribly depressing yet surprisingly beautiful. Forget the backlash, this is one of the best films of the year.

i've developed a pattern of watching newish horror movies on sunday mornings while hungover. today was the remake of "the hills have eyes". the last 2 were "touristas" and "house of wax".

none of them did much to impress, and there's clearly not enough nudity in each.

Entertaining movie with a lot of action, and actually has a palpably tolerable anti-government (pro citizen) message. Take that, Charlie Wilson.

This is true.

I mean there were a ton of great movies this year, and this one can't really stand up to "No Country" or "Ratatouille" or "There Will Be Blood," but the backlash that it is getting is totally not fair, it's not the movie's fault that the GOlden Globes are silly.

Twas supposed to be the movement of a snake. Altman followed the same shot concept in the opening of 'The Player'

Noe did a similar deal with 'Irreversible' only his concept was supposed to be like a fly.

Altman's also done other extended sequences by following one set of characters to another in an attempt to keeping that same fluid feel which has also been used by Sayles & Linklater.

Tony,

It's a fine line. If it seems like they're doing it to show off, and it's distracting from the scene, I don't like it.

I love in Children Of Men, where after the scene is over, you go...holy fuck, was that just one scene?

Rope should have been one that annoyed me, but I loved it.

Russian Ark is a good example of a show-off one (that doesn't even pull it off that well), but even that doesn't annoy me the way most of the PTA and Attonement did. Maybe it's because it's not highly rated.

What does PTA do that annoys you? The opening shot of BN ruined the rest of the movie for you? It relflected the joy of the characters at that time in their lives. The subject of the film is pleasure. The middle hour of Magnolia is one hell of a high wire act of sustained tension. If anything There Will Be Blood is every bit as stylistically extravagant it just does so in the other direction. Extended closeups as opposed to extended roving camera scenes. I didn't like Atonement for reasons other then the sub-David Lean panoramas people have been talking about.

Very dated -- and I'm not even sure what the big deal was originally. Some of the scenes now are like bad blaxpoitation (as if there's any that's good).

Really stupid, and nowhere near as good as the documentary American Movie (whose star Mark Borchard also appears here). The Tonight Show producer with the Wisconsin dialect was pretty funny, though.

Crazy Love -- pretty good, but not great. The plot, in its entirety:
He loves her, but he's married. He fakes a divorce. She breaks up with him, so he hires people to throw lye in her face, blinding and disfiguring her. He serves four years in prison, is released, proposes to her, and she accepts. Yada yada yada, he has an affair years later as an old man and, when his mistress breaks up, he threatens to do the same to her. His wife stands by him, he is acquitted, they're still together.
I wonder what the story was behind casting Heston in that--most ludicrous Mexican EVAR.

From what I remember when the '98 cut came out, there was some story that Welles wanted a Mexican actor (most likely Ricardo Montelban), but the studio wanted Heston. However, I can't find any verification of this.

The Wikipedia entry cites interviews with Heston, who claims that he was approached by the studio to play the lead. When he learned that Welles was going to play Quinlan, Heston suggested to the studio that Welles should also direct. Since Welles was on the outs with Hollywood as a director, this does make some sense. Welles worked for actor's pay.

The bigger kerfuffle was over the story changes and re-cutting the studio did once Welles had delivered the rough cut. There are numerous versions of that story as well, but once Welles saw the final cut of the film, he sent a fifty-four page memo to the studio, outlining the problems with their changes is dialog and editing. (I think there's a copy of the memo on Wellesnet.com.)

The original rough cut was lost or destroyed. The subsequent "Directors Cuts" of the film didn't have Welles' input, although the '98 version was re-cut using as much available source material (interviews, notes, memos, etc) as was available. I like the '98 version best.
