More. The album is easily a top 20, and has broad appeal, but to end up at number one is shameful. Add on top of that the critical acclaim and you have the makings of a huge shitstorm.

shameful? come on now... i realize you're only 16, and i know Post-War wouldn't appeal to me when i was 16, but still...

what could you honestly see topping the list that wouldn't annoy a ton people? on here, pretty much nothing.

what did the 'Fork give M. Ward, anyway? Is the love here disproportional to other places?

for a potential EOY frontrunner, I'd say that's pretty low. Way to buck trends, SOMB.

If I remember correctly, "Dreamt for Light Years" had a higher score than that.

the love here for M. Ward does seem a bit skewed

I like it ok. I have nothing against him, I just don't find him to be all that special. Most people I know don't really care much about him, but I don't know a lot of bloggers/people that post on message boards, other than myself, so maybe I'm just hanging with the wrong demographic.

i think more people would be happy to see him win the SOMB poll than say Sufjan, that's for sure

honestly though, even as a long time fan of Matt's, as much as i love his music, i'm kinda surprised at how much love he's getting on here this year too. i was telling Montana, that i think the reason he's doing so well is that he appeals to the oldster crowd along with the indie/blogger types some too.

if i had to guess who'd win prior, i woulda said TV On The Radio, Decemberists, or Hold Steady

- After almost two decades of writing amazingly personal and tragic political protest songs, it was no surprise, in 2004, when he decided to visit the Middle East. Not the safe, remote areas that the embedded reporters report from, instead going to the red zones of Baghdad and the war torn areas of the West Bank and the Gaza strip to uncover the human cost of war, protected only by his guitar and video cameras. What he returned with is not only one of the years best documentaries, "I Know I'm Not Alone", but possibly his strongest album to date, "Yell Fire!". Certainly the most danceable statement about the war in Iraq, Franti puts bubbling funk, reggae, R&B and rock into a melting pot, and consistantly pulls out upbeat and uplifting tunes, at once weighted down by the wrongs in the world, yet always celebratory in the knowledge that things can get better.

1. Killer Mike - I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind

so i really love this disc(s), and was wondering (if you happened to physically own it), is it worth searching out and picking up? The music is great, but if it is just simple packaging than i dont feel a need to really go out of my way to order it.

There's not much in terms of liners although i guess the cover art is neat and you get a full listing of who produced what. Considering it was independently released, it might not be a bad idea to buy it in support, help the dude get his shit released without having to wait for other, more boring purple ribbon projects.

i really want to support him, because frankly, "the grind" is really exciting. it's just hard to put money towards production notes and stuff. i think this dude may get some of my x-mas money.

Yeah, but still...!

The Pfork influence is still there, not that I can say that their influence hasn't had some effect on me a bit. Still, their inflated 9.4's (three damn fifths from perfection?! Seriously.) for Newsom and her irritating voice and the Hold Steady with their kinda good for a local bar-band sound, having just shown up within the last month or so on their site seems to have had quite an influence on the independently minded SOMBies here.
And as far as the M. Ward love, I adored Transfiguration, but since then, it just hasn't been the same for me. Similarly, I was addicted to Neko as she belted out "Letter From an Occupant", but the country gal on her own isn't quite the same. And Lilly Allen?! Cute, but c'mon! And you'll all regret your Silversun infatuation before February comes. On top of that, you have the token votes for the oh-but-I-also-have-room-on-my-list-for-rap-and-altcountry-and-ambient-boredom-and-a-touch-of-black-metal-and-even-freakin-JustinTimberlake factoring in. Maybe a lurker like me shouldn't criticize, because afterall, it's a matter of taste, but I want to put my word in before the final tallies come in and then people start crying, "Bullshit!" That being said, my taste still lies with the bulk of you's peoples than with groups congregated pretty much anywhere else, even if you can endure the vocal strains of that milk-eyed mender.

This board had plenty of Hold Steady fans before BAGIA was released. If anything, Pitchfork's praise of it has turned some people off and turned boarders who weren't already into them away.
Newsom isn't even on a lot of lists, as far as I've seen. The people who like it really like it is the thing.

As for the year-end poll, regardless of whether I like the artist or not - I'd rather see a love-it-or-hate-it record/artist top a list than someone who a lot of people see as being "alright".

yeah, i'd kinda prefer Matt's record to come in at like #3-5 honestly, if only cuz if it ends up #1 like i think it might, will be some resentment/backlash.

but with the amount of top 10 votes Matt has gotten so far, it's obvious that plenty of people enjoy it as much or more than i do, and it's simply more than just "alright" for a lot of people.

Undo's list is a real winner. Shit.

Where is undo's list?
Or is there a new member name?

Just look for the synthesizers. Or the Cool Blue etc. thing.

1) Spearhead - Yell Fire

26) Golden Smog - How We Operate

couple things...though it didn't place in my top 50..nice call on Spearhead.

Your number 26 is not right...either it's Gomez or Golden Smog.

Crap, I probably meant to put them both there (I like them both about equally).

Ummmm....Bill, could you put Gomez - How We Operate there?

You can stick Golden Smog at the bottom, but at 47 or whatever, it probably doesn't really matter.

I wasn't taking a shot at M. Ward. I bought Post-War and I like it alright. If my list had been a bit longer, I would have had it on my list. I just think records are more interesting when it gets that love-it-or-hate-it response. Even totally populist stuff like Thriller or Coldplay have their detractors, so no matter what is #1, there will be a few people saying "What the hell, that's #1?".

Dammit, Sufjan's gonna win this poll, isn't he?
