Montanas list seemed nice to me Sparklehorse number 1 and no mention of Joanna Newsoms shitty record. I hate when children sing and it's even worse when an adult sounds like one

fuck that shit is horrible

i'm surprised to see all the love jenny lewis is getting around here. my list won't be done for a few more weeks yet but that is definitely my #1 record of the year. i'm hoping for a top 10 placement, even though i don't think it'll happen as the lists continue to roll in. just listened to it while walking my dog actually smile.gif.

You are right, it probably won't make top ten. Americana doesn't fare well here.

More Jenny Lewis love:

Uh... Sarah Silverman? Come on people! (or was that sarcasm that I'm not picking up on?)

If it wasn't sarcastic, then go rent 'Jesus is Magic'? I guess it's not really that good but there's some seriously funny bits. Basically a standard stand-up comedy concert type movie with skits thrown in, but worth the 90 minutes.

Sorry dude. The only TV I watch is Lost , Cubs or Bears games (and the Lost episodes I download via torrent). Anything else is clips from Youtube.

Eh, guess I can't blame you... well except for the Cubs games... that's gotta be rough.

Debut by trio of Stephen O’Malley (Sunn 0)))), Daniel O’Sullivan (Guapo), and Vincent de Roguin (Shora). Taking its title from The Iliad, the music here is deep and cosmic, completely unlike anything you’d expect from such heavyweights. More in the tradition of Nurse With Wound's Spiral Insana or Klaus Schulze's Cyborg than any contemporary trend, the tracks float along in a masterful collage of activity, where careful scene changes highlight O’Sullivan’s classic but artfully placed Rhodes bombs, de Roguin’s organ, and O’Malley’s guitar. Extraordinary effort has gone into editing, mastering, and shaping these pieces – these are not tossed off improvisations or “side-project” orphans.

Fantastic stuff, give it a try.

I feel like making a top 10 20 50 100 whatever list right at the end of the year is usually pretty inaccurate. I mean, considering how much music actually comes out, and how much time should really be spent with an album before making a real judgement about it, chances are most people have only gotten really wrapped up in about 20-30 albums, with another 20-60 (depending on the degree of music junky) that they're familiar with. And either way, there's always discs that are gonna slip through the cracks and we're gonna hear later on next year or whenever and be like "this is good shit how did I miss this?"

Which I suppose is the reason a board like this kind of kicks-ass... I've added more discs to my "to listen to" list in the 3 days I've been browsing this board than I have in the previous 3 months.

Thanks dudes.

Yeah way to blatantly admit that you're making a sweeping judgement about Ys based solely on the 30 seconds you heard of Milk-Eyed-Mender one time...

But I suppose we should bow to your music knowledge... White Pony is pretty obviously the best album of the last 10 years and everyone knows it... lol
Chronodiggity
That's what I'm finding as I try and make a list. There's a lot of things that I feel I should give a nod to, but I didn't really listen to them enough to make my decision that fair.
Artem
i'm talking actually more about the albums people really like vs albums from which they like 1-2 songs.

i guess some people are less critical of the stuff they hear.

Um... please define the term 'freak folk'... because I think that's just a ridiculous term someone came up with and that you're now tossing around to sound like you know what you're talking about that in no way describes Ys... which is pretty clearly not a folk album by any stretch of the term.
Artem
that's not the point

When I discover that, I just delete all the songs except the ones I like. At the end of the year, I have some sort of record of what percentage of an album I like.

Hmm... perhaps by adding the word 'freak' in front of it? You're a genius! We've just coined a new music term! FREAK FOLK, baby!

I suppose I just don't equate orchestration like that on Ys with what I think of as 'folk'...

And Artem, the point wh1tepony was making had nothing to do with whether or not he cared for a specific genre of music... he was making a sweeping generalization about her voice, which doesn't sound nearly as 'child-like' on Ys as it did on Milk Eyed Mender... which is where my barb stemmed from.

But the 'what exactly do people mean when they say freak-folk?' question is worth asking... do we just mean acoustic-lyrical stuff that sounds a little off-center like Devendra, Newsom, Six Organs of Admittance... 'cause I don't find much about those artists to be 'freaky'. Freak folk sounds like it should be some sort of hybrid between folk music and psych-rock or something...
Artem
i'm fine with calling those artists as freak folk artists
