The Good Dr Bill
All right, so we'll be counting this one down first this year. By now most of you should know the deal--you vote for as many as 50 or as few as five 2006 albums, which will be measured using the traditional voting system. Albums include:

1. LPs of all-new material
2. Live albums (not ones being re-issued or of all old material)
3. Label compilations (of recent stuff, that is--things like Total 7)
4. Artist remix/b-sides/unreleased compilations of all or mostly 2006 material

2005 vs. 2006 eligibility is broken down as follows--if you can make a case for it being 2006, you can vote for it. So that includes albums released in your country for the first time in 2006, albums that didn't receive wide exposure until 2006, or albums that were released in Dec. 2005 and didn't have enough time to sink in before voting last year.

HOWEVER--and this is a big however--you absolutely can not, under any circumstances, vote for an album that made our top 100 last year. I don't care what the extenuating circumstances are, this role is non-negotiable. So you know, these 100 albums are:

don't vote for these. Just don't.

Also, a new rule for this year: there will now no-longer be any official/unofficial list-labeling. If you post a list in this thread--unless it's clearly just a list of suggestions and is not presented in countdown form--it will be counted. If someone wants to present me with a convincing argument as to why this should not be the case, feel free, but know this rule will almost definitely stand. I'm sick of tabbing lists only to find out that they're unofficial, or people not telling me that their lists have been officialized and having their votes go uncounted. So feel free to post your unofficial lists in any thread but this one, but if you're posting a list in this thread, you better be damn sure that it's final.

That should be all. Start with the questions, voting and YSIing whenever.

also, I'm not sure when voting will end or when results will be posted quite yet--most likely sometime three-four weeks from now. Stay tuned for further updates.
Artem
i suppose than both isolee - western store and roman flugel - la forza del destino aren't legible for the album's list. these are compilations of 12" and such but some of the tracks date back to 1999.
The Good Dr Bill
if more than half of the albums are from 2006, it belongs here. If not, it belongs in the comp thread.
Artem
i'll have to check.

Just out of curiosity, why did you decide to limit the number albums we can vote for to 50 down from 100?

And dammit, that Saint Etienne album didn't get a US release until this year. So unfair.

Not sure why this isn't getting more attention, but it's pretty awesome. It's an iTunes-only song comissioned by Nike, which due to its extreme length I suppose is meant to work as the soundtrack to your average exercise routine. ILM people loosely and lazily compared it to Manuel Gottsching's E2 - E4 due to it being one album-length song (clocks in at about 45 minutes), but it's much more varied than that, with multiple movements that sound little like each other, but still manages to be fairly cohesive on the whole. Like I've said elsewhere, it mostly reminds me of Giorgio Moroder's From Here to Eternity, though I'm not really sure why.

LCD Soundsystem - "Original Run"

This is eligible for albums EOY voting, btx.

Tapes 'n' Tapes is a 2005 release, guys. Although I guess if it didn't make the cut on last year's SOMB countdown - it's fair game? Which means trouble because that thing has an unfair head-start advantage vs. everything else. I've had about a year with that thing and I've since grown to love that band and that album.

Seems like late '05/early '06 albums lose most of their momentum by this time of year and have faded from all but the diehard fans' memories and off of everyone else's radar.

Worst albums and biggest dissapointments of 2006:

On an Island - David Gilmour
the Eraser - Thom Yorke
At War With the Mystics - the Flaming Lips

An interesting note about my #1. The guy behind Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous) pretty much gave up on music after the genius album "It's a Wonderful Life". There is an interesting article up on Pitchfork about how he got back into the mix:

http://pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/...ew_Sparklehorse

Dangermouse worked on a few of the tracks too, and they have a new project called " Dangerhorse". I guess Dangermouse is a huge Sparklehorse fan, and when Mark found out they hooked up.

I'm glad this dude is back making music. He really is a musical genuis in the vein of Wilson and Barrett IMHO. His new album isn't the best Sparklehorse album , but it's still damn good.

What a nice, non-SOMBie-ish pick.

If I was going to promote one album on my list that no one will vote for and should it'd be the Bobby Bare Jr. release

Uh... Sarah Silverman? Come on people! (or was that sarcasm that I'm not picking up on?)

If it wasn't sarcastic, then go rent 'Jesus is Magic'? I guess it's not really that good but there's some seriously funny bits. Basically a standard stand-up comedy concert type movie with skits thrown in, but worth the 90 minutes.

Its probably a bit late to start pimping this, what with people already posting their lists, but I’m only just starting to realise its full brilliance so here it is anyway

Its fuzzy, analogue synths ago go for some bongo-laced, retro-space-funk

Sorry dude. The only TV I watch is Lost , Cubs or Bears games (and the Lost episodes I download via torrent). Anything else is clips from Youtube.

Well, I saw him open for the FLips (b-b-b-b-boring) in 2003, so he didn't take THAT long of a break.
