Both my local record store and the Borders used to have every X album for sale, now they're impossible to find.

Really the only band I've wanted to listen to this month.

That's a shame.

Los Angeles was a Borders purchase from way back when.
idolatry
I have grabbed so much stuff from that "thread," simakos. Or whatever it is. Fucking wonderful. Good call. Disappointed in myself for never having posted it here, come to think of it.
_______
those Garage Hangover comps are great as expected...

idolatry
1) Anybody want to talk about how awesome Black Randy & The Metrosquad was? This song always goes down well with the totally unrelated Black Monk Time, especially in these summer months.

2) Listening to this self-titled Africa Germany Germany Mexico Turkey Australia record on Olde English Spelling Bee. It's all right. For of-the-moment spacey, druggy, eastern-y shit, though, I prefer those Vibracathedral Orchestra LPs that I know at least Paves heard/kind of enjoyed.

Stupid, and therefore great, cover, though:

Also, it doesn't suck. A nice bonus.
idolatry
Oh, and there's a new Psychic Ills record, too. It's called Astral Occurence, and for some reason came out in Australia. I've never seen a copy for less than like $30, via import; too rich for my blood. But I have had the chance to listen to it, and I digs it. I digs it real good. Sounds like Mirror Eye, but really good instead of pretty all right. I sort of miss the more propulsive stuff from Dins, but I'm not complaining. This is how the minimal stuff should sound, if you ask me.
_______
anybody see this out there in download land yet?

vurt
nope but i'm looking forward to it

Has anyone else been following the Screeching Weasel SXSW controversy? Pretty interesting stuff. Dero gives a detailed rundown of what happened, but the short story: Ben took the stage in a pissy mood, complained about the shit pay, antagonized the crowd/promoters, some girl spit beer on him and threw an ice cube at him, Ben proceeded to punch said girl, and then punched the (female) owner of the club who tried to break it up. Video of the incident is below. Pretty ugly stuff.

He has since issued what appears to be a very heartfelt apology to the girl and club owner.

Anyway, SW has been a longtime favorite of mine, and as a fan this sucks (and from an even more selfish perspective, I have tickets for all three nights of the 25th anniversary Weasel shows in May, which might be cancelled now. 4 bands have already dropped out). I know it was a heat of the moment blowup, but like I said, that video is pretty fucking ugly.

Responses on all the punk gossip boards are predictable. People who hate Weasel (of which there are many) are ceasing this as an opportunity to hate more. People who love Weasel (of which there are also many) accept his apology, state that the girl started it (although no one thinks she deserved to be beat up), and think we should move on.

I'm curious to see what others think.

_______
that whole story might be one big lame PR stunt, no? he barely even hit either of them...

if it's real, which i doubt, what do people expect if you throw shit at someone? a pat on the back?

edit: okay wait, i just watched it again, he DID hit that one chick pretty good... ouch.

I doubt it's a PR stunt. SW has basically cancelled the rest of their tour.
Dag Nasty
Chinese Telephones cancelled, Teenage Bottle Rocket cancelled...folks are pretty upset. Understandably so. Chris Brown Weasel?

nobodies
Best I can tell, six bands have pulled out:

Chinese Telephones
Teenage Bottlerocket
The Soviettes
Kepi Ghouli
Chixdiggit
Zatopeks

A couple have confirmed that they are not pulling out (Shot Baker, the Queers).

The situation really sucks for fans (like me) who already shelled out cash. I was really stoked for Chixdiggit since I never got a chance to see them back in the day. I'll still probably go, if it's not cancelled.
nobodies
So now Screeching Weasel has dropped out of Screeching Weasel.

Well, I guess more accurately, everyone but Ben Weasel just left the band...and since Ben has always pretty much been the band (debateable, but stick with me), I guess SW is still around for now. I know I said above there is no way this is a PR stunt, but I've been pretty fucking obsessed with all this gossip since Monday, so who knows.

Everyday there's some statement from a prominent member of the punk community weighing in with their thoughts Today's best, and well reasoned, came from Larry Livermore.

Joe Queer issued a counterstatement where he basically calls everyone a fucking pussy.

So yeah, this is basically a telenovela with aging punk rockers.

The UV Race - Homo

Just picked this up today, it's a really great album for any garage music fan. I dunno if its on mediafire or any of those sites, but it just came out on cd a few weeks ago, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.
pigfuck

this is coming out on Aug 23. Get psyched, lol.
idolatry
Gonna be a real good time, no doubt.
Pavement Ist Rad
Whee.
_______
so any of you fools go to Blackout Fest?
Pavement Ist Rad
No.

Shit record label, shit bands.
_______
goofball... most of those bands aren't even on HoZac.

you're no rock and roll fun.
Pavement Ist Rad
TV Ghost aren't on Hozac. I saw them play in the back room of a pizza restaurant once. They were bad.
HewlettsDaughter

there were a few bands that were alright at the blackout festival.

i still like no bunny. radar eyes aren't bad.

and i would have liked to see the nervous eaters just to hear them play 'loretta.' that's a pretty great song.

idolatry
I did not attend.
JeffTweedysFatStomach
No idea but I stumbled across an album that I find to be a fucking mindblower

band is called Tages - don't know much about them, but this is their last album. Apparently, this is the "Swedish Sgt. Pepper's", whatever the fuck that means.

pigfuck
you hear about the Sun Araw/Eternal Tapestry collab thing? That should be fun.
idolatry
Yeah, somebody mentioned it to me a few weeks ago. Had no idea that I was looking forward to it. Pretty excited, even though the new Eternal Tapestry didn't really do anything for me. Purling Hiss is putting out an EP on Mexican Summer in a week or two, too. Good times.

Still regularly enjoying the fuzz out of that Houston Abstros 7", as well. Right up my alley.
pigfuck

cool 7" from a few years ago. Bought it at Amoeba in Berkeley on a lark and it's gonna be high on my decade list.

Maximum Jack
Been reading Jim Derogatis Turn On Your Mind: Four Decades of Great Psychedelic Rock, and it has me searching for tons of stuff that I missed and stuff in my collection that I haven't listened to in awhile. I'm mainly interested in the first wave of Psychedelic music, from about 1966-1970, and I found a lot of good recommendations in this thread. Most notably:

The Baroques - The Baroques (1967)

Morgen - Morgen (1969)

Five Day Week Straw People - Five Day Week Straw People (1968)

I found all of these quite easily using google search if'n yer interested. Oh, and that Tages album pictured a few posts above is also great, thanks!

fuck you all
idolatry
Your link yielded invalid files on this end, bro. Apologies. Dug "In the Morning," but am frustrated as shit, because it reminds me distinctly of a song which I cannot remember. I know how it goes, but the artist, title, and lyrics all escape me. Infuriating.
idolatry
Oh, and the new Wooden Shjips sounds awfully Moon Duo-y. And not all that great, at the moment. I was hoping for something a bit gnarlier and closer to a home run than to the infield single which this record seems to be, I guess.
Pavement Ist Rad
I have zero desire to listen to more music that sounds like that in 2011. Weaksauce.
idolatry
Wooden Shjips/Moon Duo or Hozac-by-Numbers?
Pavement Ist Rad
All that shit, I guess!

Too busy listening to real bands like Jane's Addiction and Jimi Hendrix.
pigfuck
Jane's Addiction, lol
Pavement Ist Rad
...
pigfuck
don't see how enjoyment of that band is a tenable position

takes all kinds though

Hey, MK. Here's that ridiculously overpriced Sadistic Candle cassette, from the Sun Araw site:

pigfuck
Very excited for this Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras, & The Congos collab lp/film from RVNG INTL
