The two Talking Heads live records make their studio albums sound meek and feeble.

And of course Neil Young has several live albums that are among the best things he's ever put out.

i'd agree with that for the dead but not the allmans. their studio stuff is really solid in my opinion, albeit different from the fillmore album.

Dunno if Neil's live records are my favorites of his (although they are great), but as much as I love the Talking Head's solo stuff, their two live records are fucking killer and are indeed the true highlights of their discographies.

Also, "A Quick One While He's Away" is miles better live that the unlistenable studio version.

I third this. The live cut of "Cities" absolutely destroys the studio recording in a number of ways, shapes and forms.

I'm not a huge fan of the entire Springstein Live 75-85 boxset; but I think the version of "Thunder Road" on that album is far superior to the original studio version.

I've got a live Shellac thing on my computer from France, and the rendition of Prayer to God is amazing.

Also when I saw Mastodon in 2004, the stuff from Leviathan was way more powerful in a live setting.

Hmm, yeah, they're fucking amazing live, but I think their studio stuff sounds just as powerful (since most of it's usually just them playing live anyway, just with awesome mics.) Actually seeing them play that stuff, though... fucking unreal.

Cure - Play For Today.

The version on Paris is far more powerful than the studio version.

I saw Grizzlybear opening for Efterklang two years ago. It is one of my top-3 shows ever, but I can't stand the studio recordings. That kinda sucks.

IMO, almost everything past the first few albums sounds better live. This gets more and more pronounced as his career goes on. There have been several times in his recent albums where I don't get one of his songs until he opens it up on stage and then I can hear it's strength as a song. Beyond that, the guy is constantly tweaking his old material (typically with fantastic results) and coming up with great cover material and despite his age, he maintains a rarely seen fire, exuberence, and showmanship.

Is there anyone in the world who could've expected that the same guy who put out the brilliant This Year's Model in 1978 would be the same guy who, 21 years later, would be walking around the world's concert halls singing a song called 'Couldn't Call It Unexpected #4' without a microphone while the whole crowd sat silently until they starting humming along?

And if there was, would they think that he could still go out and rock it with a kick-ass live band whenever he wanted to??

XTC and Scritti Politti.

Funny you say XTC, since there is so little chance that they will ever perform live again (at least in the states).

My choices....
They Might Be Giants
Polyphonic Spree
Pink Floyd, The Wall (even though they had to cheat with tapes for "The Trial")
The Residents "Mole" concerts

When I saw the P. Spree in Chicago a couple years ago, the crowd was flat-out dead. Not nearly as fun as it should have been.

I think we went to the same show. But still, the footage on the Together We're Heavy bonus DVD captures the band's spirit at the Metro and at a Tokyo stadium show quite well.

Gotta disagree. Started to fall in love with them when I heard "Wagon Wheel" (for Christ sake, I danced to it with my mother at my wedding). But the more I heard, the more I heard a jam band disguised in bluegrass clothing. I finally saw them this past November, and they were just plain boring. Maybe the stink of petuli and weed got to me, but I hated the show.

Plus they took an intermission. I fucking hate intermissions.

That's a shame. I really enjoyed myself at the show. My mate won front row seats, so we were right up there with them. Their energy was just incredible. And I actually liked the intermission. It gave me a chance to have a bitchfit over the phone with my friends who left me to go see T.I. across town.

Adding to the list, Alice Smith (opener for Citizen Cope) was fucking phenomenal. Her album is incredible too, but she killed the live tracks. She's the only opening artists I've ever seen receive a standing ovation.

Runner and the Thermodynamics - The 2nd best opening band I have ever seen. I was blown away by thier drummer and they had great stage presence. The person I was with liked the band so much he bought the CD on the spot. We listed to it and went "meh"

Gil Mantera's Party Dream - The best opening band I have ever heard and their stage persona will NEVER be topped. Albums are ok. LIVE is where it's at.
