VH1 and Entertainment Weekly are scouring the country to find 16 three-person teams who think they've got what it takes to compete in the most intense pop culture trivia tournament to date, The World Series of Pop Culture.
The tournament, which will be taped to air on VH1 in late summer 2006, will happen over the weekend of April 28th through the 30th in New York City.
Whether teams consist of friends who gather to watch "Lost" every Wednesday, co-workers who spend lunch hours discussing their favorite films, or siblings who grew up addicted to sitcoms, the three members must have extensive knowledge of the films, TV shows, music, and pop culture happenings of the '70s, '80s, and '90s through today.
Do you think you and your cohorts have the pop culture smarts to beat out the competition? Then come meet us in person and prove it!
Casting Calls followed by Regional Qualifying Games will be held by appointment only in the following cities on the following dates:
• Los Angeles: March 4-5
• Chicago: March 11-12
• Dallas: March 18-19
• Atlanta: March 25-26
• New York: April 1-2
Go to EW.com (under "SPECIAL COVERAGE") or VH1.com (under "SHOWS" and then "CASTING CALLS") to apply!
Contestants must be U.S. Residents and at least 18 years of age at the time of the audition. Go to EW.com or VH1.com for further eligibility requirements.
I would love to do something like this, but I only know maybe one or two people who would be capable of competing, and their interest might be minimal at best. Anywho, I know there are some pop culture fanatics on this board who would be interested in this.

One of the local morning show DJs is trying out for this. I'd be interested but I am weak when it comes to sports and some movies. However ask me about now famous people that guest starred on Growing Pains and I am all over it.

I have a pleathera of random facts, but alas it sides more with actual historical, geographical, and scientific stuff. In fact its the damn arts and entertainment pie piece that always pisses me off in Trivial Persuit. Thank God there is no spelling pie piece.

This sounds terribly scary...but I've got nothing better to do on the audition date. If you will be "captain", and further hoping that
we don't have to pay the expenses of air travel, sign me up on the team. Contact me further at agrimorfee@hotmail.com.

In all seriousness, I would freaking rule at this. And I'm old enough to have the 70's and 80's covered.

Saw the premiere episode, and Damn it was EZ. Those folks didn't know "License to Ill" was the biggest selling rap album of the 80's!
Overall, a couple of toughies like the hotel from Home Alone 2, but a SOMBie team would wipe the floor.

I was gonna try out with my wife and one of my Ultimate Film Fanatic cohorts, but we got lazy, and never went. We probably should have.

yeah, I'm hoping it gets a little tougher in the next round. Not to say that I knew all the answers--the TV categories would've totally fucked me over--but in the categories that I should have been able to get all of them (mainly the music ones) I was pretty easily able to get all of them. Still, hard to blame anyone for not knowing the Turtles sued De La Soul for an obscure album track off
3 Feet High and Rising.
And yeah, if me and a couple of my college bowl friends had made it to the auditions, I'm confident we could've pretty well aced this thing.

anyone notice last night that when they would recap right before commercial they actually announced who won the games before they even ended? nice work VH1
i totally blew the de la soul question as well as the home alone 2?
oh and most importantly...how about that cleavage on the black girl from Velvet Ropes.....

They did show the episode once already on Sunday night, even though they were still promoting this as the "premier" so that could explain it. But I was telling my brother that I didn't really care about the teams, I just wanted to yell out all of the answers to the questions.

I wanted the Lazer Wolves to win the first one, just because they most reminded me of people I hang out with. I couldn't believe the guy didn't get the Spinal Tap question though.
How about that chick in the second match that almost single-handedly won the game for the team? Nothing foxier than a woman who knows her Fresh Prince and Bananarama.

I watched the first episode (Lazer Wolves vs. Velvet Rope Revolution / 3 the Hard Way vs. PXC 380 (?)). Questions were frustratingly easy. Do they have to present simple questions that most viewers would be able to answer? Do they think that making questions much harder would make people not want to watch?
I got a few that stumped both contestants. Is it jus harder to think on your feet when you're in front of a big audience like that? In the question about the best selling rap album of the '80s, part of the clue was that it came out in 1986. How can any self-respecting trivia buff guess Straight Outta Compton?
Once again, another show that I feel I could actually compete on, but I sort of suspect that they weeded out teams that were "too good" in order to keep it competitive, and also to try to select contestants with goofy charmisma.

I think the main kick of this for people like us is that this competition really has very little to do with music. There are some music questions--some whole categories, even--but despite the show being on VH-1, it doesn't provide the core for the competition--movies and especially TV are much more prominently featured, while the music questions are often insultingly easy. There was a category last night about music videos, where they described a video's plot/concept and you had to name the video (they even gave you the artist name in the question). Three of the six videos they asked questions about were Spike Jonze videos, something that would've been immediately apparent to most of the people on this webboard, but something which probably never even occured to either the makers of the questions or the contestants answering.
The TV questions though, for me at least, are frequently impossible. I wonder if there are TV geeks out there who find those questions as easy as we find the music ones.

From the top of my head, was that doll "Kitty Carryall"?
And, regardless of doll name, wouldn't you think that any kind of doll would belong to Cindy?
