Taxidermy. I find hunting kind of stupid, but I plan on eventually getting several pieces and filling a room with them (hopefully a bar). I especially like the mutant stuff from people like The Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermy.

For me it would be whether or not Demons have been manifesting themselves in physical form in South America lately. My Uncle said there is a winged creature down there that sucked all the blood out of a full farm of goats and chickens.

not the mundane turning lead into gold aspects... but the aspects that pertain to the illumination of the human spirit... light from darkness. ..fulcanelli writes that this was exactly the intention of the great cathedrals of europe..

my wife has a sincere fascination with roadkill. she always rubbernecks and sometimes slows down to get a better look. she's not shy to provide a full report on what she's seen either. weird.

although i heard some beloved photographer once did a piece about roadkill. i should find it for her.....you know, valentines day.

There's a new field of inquiry called astro-archeology that looks at the fact that so many of these ruins are aligned to particular aspects of the night sky. Also a lot of these contain stones that couldn't be put into place with the technology of today, pretty interesting stuff. Does it ever seem strange to anyone that recorded history drops off into the abyss six to seven thousand years ago. It's as odd as those who hold that the earth was created in six days and that the whole planet is less than 7000 years old. There's provable scientific fact and then there's scientific theory, the problem lies in that the latter is too often assumed to be fact.

maybe recorded history drops off around the time right before written language was invented

Astro-Archeology is still too young a science to be very exact, you have too many people deciding that the Egyptian Pyramids were built in 10,500 BCE because the stars in Orion's belt would have lined up with the pyramids back then (except of course that they don't, they would have to be several miles further apart than they are, but that's another argument).

Most of the people deciding that stones couldn't have been put in place with ancient, or even modern methods, don't understand how to do the work. I watched a show last year on PBS in which engineers were trying to recreate the methods used to build the pyramids & raise obelisks. After failing to raise the obelisk for several days they asked the head of their Egyptian work crew to give it a try, he had it raised in a Morning.

Also, depending on your definition of "Recorded History" it could be alot earlier or alot later than 6-7 Thousand years ago. The earliest writing found were ancient Chinese symbols made 8.6 thousand years ago, but there aren't recorded records 'til 5 - 5.5 thousand years ago.

i'm completely with you on this. so much that i want to publish a book with some really good bathroom graffiti. i dont know....chapters devoted to specific bathrooms and what not. i think it would be a hoot. everyone else..probably not so much.

I also enjoy some good bathroom grafitti. Lounge Ax used to have some pretty funny stuff in those funky "stalls."

I'm way too fascinated by some of the freaky stuff they show on the Discovery Health Channel. "Two Headed Baby" "Conjoined Twins" "I Am My Own Twin" "Pregnant for 46 years" - I could watch that shit all night. There's a combination fascination/repulsion thing going on that seems to work for me. Anyone else see the Two Headed Baby show? It haunts me.

I've thought about this too. Just getting a digital camera and cataloging every stall in the county, or travelling across the country to do it. Problem is, I'm not sure many readers would want to buy such a book, even if it was a quality coffee table-sized volume. I bet there are already websites where people are posting collections of photos like these. I've been afraid to look, lest I find out that my idea has already been taken.

I absolutely love gas stations, rest stops, and anything along those lines. The food, the smell, the lovely weirdos who work (or hang out) there, and of course, the location. The urban ones suck, but the ones off of interstates in the middle of nowhere, or in rural type areas. God I love that stuff.

I also have an unhealthy obsession with tiny organizational items like paper clips and rubber bands. I usually always have multiple rubber bands around my wrist. People think it's for some kind of "look," but they're wrong. I keep them there for good luck and just in case they're needed.

Be sure to check out the bathroom graffiti in law schools...especially around finals. That's some heavy shit (pun not intended).

A guy who taught for many years @ UC Berkeley, Alan Dundes, sort of modernized the field of "folklore" to include info such as graffiti. This sort of book might have a market in that corner of cultural anthropology.

I'd recommend a book to you... "When The Earth Nearly Died" By Allain And J.B. Delair. This goes in very scholarly fashion, into catastrophism. It is not some sort of new age dogma from some fringe "Scientist" but quite well researched, and Allain and Delair have quite the academic pedigree so to speak. The mainstream view of A and B have lots of dollars/grants and acceptance attached and as such is often driven by forces other than reproducable scientific fact. And please PBS.. .who was that Dr. Hawass? That guy is a total carnival barker.

Cave Diving

Never been, never been scuba diving either for that matter, but always been totally fascinated about cave diving, ever since I read an article in Outside Magazine in the early 90s about divers exploring a particular cave called Huautla in Mexico.

Here's a really interesting article about the place:
