Or even musical snobbery in general. How is it that we feel that our tastes are better than everyone elses? (really they are, aren't they)

I realize that this might end up as some metadiscussion about SO itself, but that'd be interesting too. Everybody knows a girl (why is it always girls? ok, so it's not ALWYAYS girls, but c'mon...) who is like the "biggest music snob ever", and it totally makes her more and less awesome. A person who only listens to the most [insert adjective that implies "too coolness"] thing/band untill they become too popular. You totally know what I'm talking about.

I also realize that this is my first post, so feel free to rip on me as much as you want.

is it ever girls?

I hate this idea.

I don't think it's a girl very often. Sounds like this guy's (ex?) girlfriend drove him up the wall and he wants revenge (lol, He Wants Revenge) on a syndicated scale. Just hand him the mic for an entire hour. This could be entertaining.

Not every member of the female gender is neccesarily an indie girl music snob.

Damn.

My understanding of reality has been shaken....

I figured it was a better idea than those "top songs" ideas..... "Top ten songs from bands who seriously considered using fart noises in a song"

That's a different NPR show...

anyways... No, not a girlfriend... not anyone in particular even.... if I tried to expand on what I mean by music snob i'd just make a fool of myself.

I'm surprised you guys think it's never girls, maybe you don't know too many? no... I didn't just say that.... .... that was kinda mean.... I'm leaving it.....

I like that you like Baby Teeth. See you Double Door 2/7?

I know several. One of them is a PR agent in Chicago. Music snobbery knows no gender lines.

You sure? Double Door's site lists three other bands playing that night.

if you're a snob if you deny ever liking a band you in fact used to like, than yeah, many girls would count.

The Sound of Young America did a rock snobs show in Apr 2005.Rock Snobs with Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, comedian Greg Proops, and Steven Daly, co-author of "The Rock Snob Dictionary".

something something about women being snobs...

Making my best attempt to avoid falling into the event horizon of pedantic douchebagery that seemingly lingers never too far from any post on this board, I will only state that I believe your stochastic model may suffer from a very skewed sample.

I fancy myself a man: a man's man. And, I am such a snob that I don't even listen to music. I rebel against the very perception of linear time by listening to just random collections of disjointed tones.

Ok, there's a first post for the archives.

My ex girlfriend thinks I am a music snob because I don't like Celine Dion, Nickleback, and Maroon 5. Am I a music snob because I don't like them?

If those are the bands your ex thinks you should like, it seems like she is just consuming whatever mainstream stuff is being presented to her. Boring.

I freely voice my opinion about them. I listen to alot of music, including jazz and classical, but because I think Kenny G and Nora Jones have nothing to do with Jazz, does not make me a snob, but some people call me that. I am not so much a snob because I think Jazz should evolve and incorporate new stuff. Same thing with classical, Andrea Bocelli has nothing on Placedo Domingo. So if that makes me a snob than I am proud to be a snob. Give me stuff that moves me and speaks to me, and not stuff that "I am suppose to like" because popular radio tells me I am supppose to like it.

I suppose a guy who listens to almost nothing but 30-year old jazz could be considered a music snob...nudge nudge, wink wink laugh.gif

I actually love this idea, although the whole musical snobbery thing is probably why I like SO so much. I think being a musical snob is being someone who doesn't listen to mainstream radio, and if god forbid, they listen to a band whose song gets radio play, that song is their least favorite. Someone who has disdain for 'popular' music. Someone for whom music is a lifetime passion, not just background noise or youthful infatuation. Someone whose music has to be both intellectually stimulating and be able to reach in and satisfy the primal urges of being human.

So I probably just defined myself as a complete nutjob, but there it is. And I am both female and skinny.

I don't know if I'd totally agree with you stargazer. Don't get me wrong, I'm with you 99% of the way, but, holy shit, that American Boy song with Estelle and Kanye is the FREAKIN' SHIT. And unless I'm not a music snob, which is a label I've accepted and which is thrust upon me daily, I have no business thinking this.
stargazer
My musical snobbery must have progressed to the point where I have no idea which song you're referring to! lol

But, yes, I can appreciate music just for its fun aspect as well, and have a damn good time with it. Just not something I'd probably obsess over. I'm currently reading Musicophilia, which is about music and the brain. Kinda crazy how our minds pick up on jingles and such, against our own free will really.
