Gemmy's Supligen sounds like it's sampling something distinctive from some other song -- that whiny synth thing that's prominent at the beginning. What the hell is it? Or maybe a more recent song has sampled it. either way.

EDIT: it hit me. It's The Knife's Na Na Na. Srsly. Either that or a gigantic coincidence.

I know what you mean but I think its coincidence. I just listened now and the Gemmy synth sounds like a fusion of the Na Na Na synth and voice effect that comes after so the overall sound is similar.

Label: Cocoon Recordings
Catalog#: COR020-2
Format: CD, Album
Country: Germany
Released: 3 April 2009
Genre: Electronic
Style: Minimal, Tech House

Warsaw-based techno producer Jacek Sienkiewicz is set to release his Modern Dance mix CD this month. First it was Ricardo Villalobos, then Omar-S, but now Jacek Sienkiewicz is set to follow in the footsteps of producers compiling their own productions onto a mixed CD. Instead of going for a selection entirely composed of exclusive cuts or new edits like the aforementioned mixes, Sienkiewicz has instead decided to mix the tracks from his previous Recognition and Cocoon releases in their original form. There are a few new selections, however, including collaborations with Marcin Öz (AKA DJ Highfish), as well as Chilean minimalist Pier Bucci on the stripped-back groove of "Eastern Promises." As with his Téchnè and Displaced full-lengths, the mix will find its home on Sven Vath's Cocoon imprint, and will be preceded by the release of his "All Yours" single in the coming weeks.

Yeah, I dunno. Maybe manufacturing delays or something (isn't Kapsize his own label?) Doesn't seem to be available from any of the regular online stores.

Vurt, I've been listening to that list of singles you posted a few pages back over this weekend, and let me just say holy shit what a weekend of new discoveries. I mean I've heard about a third of them, but the ones I haven't heard are all fucking amazing.. going to check out Bruegs' additions too.. what a year. This feels like some kind of watershed moment or something, I've never heard so much genuinely unique, amazing music converging onto one scene all at once like this.. boggles the mind. Spinning the Débruit right now. cool.gif

Also new Boxcutter is fantastic, it's all over the place but it coheres surprisingly well. I found Glyphic really boring (though maybe I need to revisit that one), didn't listen to whatever record came after, but I gotta admit the kickass cover art made me really want to hear Arecibo Message and I'm glad I did. Finally listened to 10-20 and really enjoyed that too, that guy (?) has an amazing grasp of textures and tones. Beautiful stuff.

P-Sherb makes reference to this in his Martyn review (I'd nudge that score up a bit, but still a good read). It's the margins where all this amazing cross-pollination stuff is happening and for once in my life, I'm actually listening to this technoid stuff when it comes out rather than discovering it belatedly.

this Martyn disc is really fucking cool. not that dubsteppy. more techno really, some dub techno songs/parts too. it kinda just stands apart from a lot of the stuff i've heard this year in that it operates in the dubstep realm in terms of rhythm and the absolutely CRUSHING bass, but there's a ton of wonkyesque synth lines and criss-crossing melodies. a real delight bros.
vurt
Yeah, I feel you, young Chro(nohomo). It's a great record that sprawls out and touches so many bas(s)es, but he has this real deft touch so it flows really well. Want to listen to it walking around at night. It feels like that type of record.
Chronodiggity
the vocal tracks are also A+++ which is difficult to pull off.

i was not expect this at all, despite the hype.
Bruegs
My initial reaction to Great Lengths was a bit like The Sherb. Admiration but with slight reservations about the smoothness of the whole thing (even at 128). For the first couple of listens it felt like watching an artistic genius producing masterpieces in various styles without really breaking sweat – restrained professionalism over passion. But with each subsequent listen you realise that you’ve been fooled by the sexy exterior – there is a world of complexity, innovation and passion pumping away under the hood. Its expansion by stealth - a Dutch Master blowing open the boundaries without bombs. Not so much bending genres to his will as seducing them into complicity.

Two months down the line, after countless spine tingling rushes and innumerable pant-expanding boners, I’m still not quite sure how he takes all those disparate threads and weaves them into a sleek, frictionless whole. Sitting here listening to the vinyl all the way through for the first time – I find myself frozen in slack jawed awe. Once again bewitched by this hypnotic concoction of the evocatively familiar and the exotic unknown.

Brilliant Orange indeed.

Oh yeah, one last thing - I picked up KAP003 today. Why do Joker's productions always sound bigger than everything else?

I know that looks stupid but everytime I get one of his 12s or catch a set he always has the edge - beats&synths crisper and more monolithic than the rest of the field.

Sold his soul? Got access to a secret magic music computer? Dre's bastard offspring? Just better at balancing the dynamics?

It's cold, dark and airless, like interstellar space. Like the best of his stuff. "Behind the Stars" is especially immense and works itself up into quite the monster (especially when those big synths start bleeding out about the eight minute mark). It's always hard to process this kind of thing on first couple of listens, but it's definitely great and it's definitely got me excited to hear more from him later in the year.

Excited to get my hands on KAP003. You're right about his sound, it's huge and bright like the cover of his 12". He's just one of those guys, I think, who hears the music slightly differently and can translate it from his brain to the machines more naturally.

what the fuck planet is this record from?

coming from someone who slept on Los Angeles h-core and now loves it, i'm very glad to be enjoying his buddies disc now. this is so far the kind of album where not only does one song sound nothing like the one before it, but it's hard to even say that a track is even in the same genre as the song before it. DUB. WONKY. HIP-HOP. BREAKBEAT. DUBSTEP. FUNK. all in stunning clarity and composition. can't say i'll fall in love with the tracks just yet, but a real eargasm right now.

i really hope i'm not the only one who has been enjoying this. i definitely did fall in love with the tracks after two or three listens. it's the complete package as an album. you can feel it unfolding thematically and sonically, each track adding new elements of Ras' style and then stripping them away. it might be the most perfect sounding album, quality wise, that i've heard in months. all the levels and sounds are just fine and crisp and powerful. my previous assessments of the style stand. love this record.

and of course i enjoy the Afrikanist samples about black empowerment and self-love. FUBU.

a lot of the Ras G tracks don't really make sense at all without the context of the previous one and the following one. they can sound kinda incomplete as a stand alone. the whole thing is really brisk though and easy to digest. very unbloated, especially for an electronic LP.
