And to finish on a brighter note, I’m h-over-h for Rinse 10 - SIX tracks from Lil Silva = Marcus delivers. Really good entry point for the "What is UK Funky?" threads we will be inundated with in about 6 months from now. Ill post a link when I find the retail.

I can help you with some UK Funky. This set is two hours of Shanti and Mak 10 on Rinse earlier this year. Peeps at Dissensus reckon its the best Funky mix eva. Worth hearing anyway: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LGMZ74LG

Cheers for the mixes Vimothy. Picked this up today..

I'm kind of burnt out on Soundclash 1 but it was worth the wait for Harpy alone. There is about a minute of it at the end of that youtube - its like a long-lost Wiley production. Makes me think I need to get his Ice Rink Refix....fast. Grevious Angel is permanently on it, in so many different ways. This should be tasty 'n'all...

QUOTE (Blackdown)
Dusk + Blackdown v Grievous Angel “Margins Music Redux” is forthcoming on Keysound at the end of November.

The album is our “Margins Music” totally reworked by Grievous, with remixed art from Stu Give Up Art (Tempa, Rinse, Applepips, Keysound…) and mastered by Jason Transition (DMZ, Hyperdub, Deep Medi, Keysound, too many dubplates…).

The album is part remix LP, part DJ set part dub rework. In late 2007 and early 08 I became enthralled by Grievous Angel’s Ableton mixes that blurred the lines between DJing and remixing. The best of these are here (Devotional Dubz mix and Dubstep Sufferah 3). We offered him the parts to every track on “Margins Music” and told him to mutate its DNA.
HRTX
That Rinse mix is, well, funky. It's nice to hear funky that isn't Crazy Cousinz.

"Trauma" is a jam, the, um, edit of "4 Minutes" here is wonderful, and I was surprised to see that old Geeneus track pop up. Or, at least, it feels old. The mix really starts to pick up about halfway through which is great because I usually get "mix fatigue" at about that point.

new four tet - more of the same as the recent(ish 12"s), ambient b side and more repetitive beats from the curly headed one - he will be sporting a no.1 soon if this continues! Can still recognise his jazzy snare action from miles away tho, in fact the more i listen the less different this is to his previous work.

"Dubstep lovers rejoice: Hot on the heels of Soul Jazz's Steppas Delight 2 comes the seventh instalment of Tempa's long-running Dubstep Allstars series, a "double disc expedition which unearths newfound pleasures aplenty" thanks to Ramadanman and Chef, two of the scene's most esteemed luminaries. Coming at a time when the genre paints an increasingly splintered picture, it's a combination of two divergent schools: disc one, mixed by sub-bass veteran Chef, goes heavy on the main room vibes with a spate of fresh tracks from half-step big guns Skream, Benga and Silkie alongside deeper cuts from Mala, Cyrus and Conquest, while Hessle Audio's Ramadanman plunges headlong into the world of techno-flavoured 2-step on disc two with crossover workouts from Martyn, Scuba and Peverelist, and more than a bit of Hessle activity courtesy of nu-school wonderkids Pangaea, Untold, Joe and Ramadanman himself. So this is really great, pulling out the savagely rewired minimalism card. Some people are calling it boring with its palette of steel and chrome and house piano picked up secondhand at an abandoned Detroit factory, but I don't see it. So many great moments on here where it flexes mechanical joints and rips your throat out. Favourite tracks are "Don't Know. Don't Care." and "Never Went Away".

Continuing on in the theme of Shackleton..

My attempt to do it justice.

Nice review. It's a hard album for me to talk about without going into raptures, but all I do when I write is bat around superlatives.

Score is too low, obv. And, if I'm going to be pedantic, Villalobos doesn't run Perlon. It's Zip and some other dude.

EDIT: Discogs tells me it's Zip and Markus Nikolai.
HRTX
Wasn't sure about the extent of the Villalobos connection and meant to double-check before I submitted the review. Whoops! Thanks though, and I don't think it's pedantic.
Pat Sansone
Nice review Heretix. As someone who hasn't really listened to Shackleton's music before Three EPs, i think you put everything in context and helped to explain the dude's sound pretty well.

I've been listening to Three EPs off and on for a few weeks now, but just during the past week i really fell in love. What a spectacular album. Deserves all sorts of praise. I know you said this album is less creepy than his previous work Heretix, but "Something Has Got to Give" is creepy as hell. I love it
vurt
If you haven't, you should check out Soundboy Punishments, which is a comp containing the first batch of Skull Disco singles. It's not all Shackleton, but it has some of his defining work.

All that said, after living with Three EPs for a while now, it's definitely my favourite Shackleton-related thing. The early stuff is like rough pencil sketches whereas the new release is a giant Rothko-esque canvas, all in huge, overwhelming blocks of grey and black.
Pat Sansone
Thanks for the recommendation Vurt. I will get on that

Also, I hate to be that guy, but I'm starting to compile a year-end list and i'm feeling lazy at the moment. I would love to sit and read the last few dozen pages of this thread, but for time's sake maybe Vurt or anyone else could recommend some electronic records that I absolutely must hear before I make a list. So far this year I've really loved the Shackleton record, Kaito's Trust, and that Field record. I know I'm missing out on a ton of shit. I'm not asking anyone to rank anything or go into great detail, but i'm sure some of you electronic music connoisseurs have some preliminary favorites

Any recommendations will be met with my sincerest appreciation. Or you know....feel free to call me a lazy asshole
HRTX
Well, there's a problem there. Electronic music, especially the dubstep/bass/whatever stuff, is very singles-focused. Yeah, one could put together an impressive list of albums but it wouldn't even come close to a comprehensive list including all the great 12s and EPs released this year. I uploaded a really really long mix a while back in the thread with what I saw as the highlights of the first half of the year. A lot of single-only tracks but also a lot of songs from albums.

Some recommendations off the top of my head, Shackleton notwithstanding because it's already been discussed:

2562 - Unbalance
Nosaj Thing - Drift
5 Years of Hyperdub (duh)
SND - Atavism
Terror Danjah - Gremlinz
Pom Pom - CD 001
Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport
Atom TM - Liedgut
Martyn - Great Lengths
Boxcutter - Arecibo Message
Neil Landstrumm - Bambaataa Eats His Breakfast
Pictureplane - Dark Rift
The Black Dog - Further Vexations
Dam-Funk - Toeachizown
Louderbach - Shine
Redshape - The Dance Paradox

Some good EPs:

Hudson Mohawke - Polyfolk Dance
Untold - Gonna Work Out Fine
Debruit - Let's Post Funk
Jamie Vex'd - In System Travel
Bruno Pronsato - The Make Up The Break Up
Eskmo - Hypercolor

I'm not going to attempt to list all the great 12s and singles of the year, but here are some outstanding ones:

Akira Kiteshi - "Pinball" / "Noglitch"
Guido - "Orchestral Lab" / "Way You Make Me Feel"
Joy Orbison - "Hyph Mngo" / "Wet Look"
Cooly G - "Narst" / "Love Dub"
Kode 9 - "Black Sun" / "2 Far Gone"
Burial & Four Tet - "Moth" / "Wolf Cub"
Four Tet - "Love Cry" / "Our Bells"
Blue Daisy - "Space Ex" / "The Fall"
Floating Points - "Love Me Like This (Nonsense Dub)" / "Shangrila"
Andy Stott - "Brief Encounter" / "Drippin"
Zomby - "Digital Flora"
Joker / DJ2000F & J Kamata - "Digidesign" / "You Don't Know What Love Is"
Gemmy - "Supligen" / "BT Tower"
Darkstar - "Aidy's Girl Is A Computer" / "Aidy's Girl Is A Computer (Kyle Hall Remix)"

Some excellent mixes:

Shed's Wax Treatment Podcast
Panorama Bar 02: Tama Sumo
Rinse 10: Marcus Nasty
Eskmo's Ancestor Mix
Mary Anne Hobbs Presents: Wild Angels

And some assorted great remixes:

Florence + The Machine - "You've Got The Love (Remix by the XX)"
Little Boots - "Meddle (Joker Remix)"
La Roux - "In For The Kill (Skream's Let's Get Ravey Remix)"
Fever Ray - "If I Had A Heart (Fuck Buttons Remix)"
Annie - "Anthonio (Fred Falke Remix)"
U2 - "Magnificent (Fred Falke Full Club Mix)"

I forgot a shit-ton of stuff but I'm sure vurt and Bruegs can fill in the holes, and it should keep you busy for a while. These are the ones that stuck out to me.
vurt
That's a good list.

I'd add both Mount Kimbie EPs (Maybes and Sketch on Glass) as well as the James Blake 12". Taken together, the Kimbie work is up there with the best of the year.

I'd also recommend checking out some of Danny Wolfers many aliases, particularly:
Nacho Patrol - Futuristic Abeba and Africa Jet Band
Dickie Smaber and the Moerwijk Crew - FC Den Haag

Some other good albums/EPs:

Nosaj Thing - Drift
10-20 - 10-20
Moritz von Oswald Trio - Vertical Ascent
Bodycode - Immune
Floating Points - Vacuum Boogie EP
Rustie - Bad Science EP
Mika Vainio - Vandal EP

You probably have way too much to be going on with now, and it'll take forever to sort through that lot...
HRTX
Durr, I forgot about Mount Kimbie. One of the best for sure.

Honestly not crazy about Bad Science.
Pat Sansone
Fuck, you guys are the best. MVP boarding right there. This at least gives me some sort of template to work with. It also reminded me that i had been meaning to check out those Boxcutter and Black Dog albums a long time ago and just forgot to.

Anyways....Heretix and Vurt are the best. For real

Or you know....feel free to call me a lazy asshole

you lazy asshole

seems like Admiral Vurt and Rear-Admiral Heretix have got pretty much all the bases covered. I won't add anything because it’s always nice to have a few surprises come list time and Petty Officer Tim has got enough listening to be getting on with.
