µ-Ziq - Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique [Planet Mu, 2007]

I'll admit that I haven't heard much else from this guy (solo, anyway, I dig his stuff in Mike & Rich and Slag Boom Van Loon) but this didn't really do much for me. Still, after listening to the whole thing, that last track scared the hell out of me.

haven't heard Apparat, cos i didn't like what they did with Ellen Allien last year, and i'm certain that i would not like their own work either.

don't wanna praise Tobias Thomas mix too much, cos i don't like it all that much, but for a home listening it's rather nice. that slow build up that you mention gives it a nice loungey feeling. which is not necessary bad for that kind of mix. if you want something more upbeat, there is a live mix by Oliver Hunteman. great electro house. it rocks if you dig that kind of sound. but if you'd rather listen to something minimal, but that also can rock, i'd recommend the new M-Nus mix, called Nothing Much. it's very good. if you dig M-Nus sound you'll definitely like that one.

Matthew Dear album bored the hell out of me. it's worse than The Postal Service, and even the last album by Junior Boys is better than it (and i hated that Junior Boys album). there's nothing on that album that is better than "deserter" which in itself is a pretty forgettable track after you listen to it 10 or so times in a row.

if you want a techno album with a but or human touch to it, i'd recommend Kalabrese. it's got its minimal base, but most of the stuff on it, as i understood, are live instruments, and there's a lot of vocals and stuff like that. blends all kinds of styles and everything.

Lose My Chair

here are two albums that i like the most from this year:

JPLS - Twilight [M-Nus]

Green01 Skoozpots (Twilite Remix)
i dig this one. great minimal sound. keeps a nice vibe to it throughout the whole album.

Digitaline - Anticlickwise [Cadenza]

Supertroll
this will probably sound way too minimal on the first listen. but try listening to it through headphones and it'll definitely grow on you. i don't think there's been an album as cohesive as this one so far. great production on all tracks.

i could post some more stuff like Efdemin, Pantha du Prince, Gabriel Ananda, Robert Babicz, Stephan Bodzin and Dominik Eulberg, but you probably heard most of them. and to me they're not all that great.

Yeah taht Kalabrese track is the shit. Im suprised you dont do more drugs artem a lot of the shit you seem to like is very slow (tempo wise) and liquid. Perfect for those hazy summer days with some brew and bong. those other two tracks arent as good to me... not the kind of loop I like, to sterile and laboratory sounding... good, just not for me. The first is like new minimal and the second two are closer to old school minimal.

That Mystery Palace album is gorgeous. I love this thread.

Also Artem, have you heard the Apparat remix on Lusine's Podgelism album? I can't see how anyone would not like that track...
Artem
no. i haven't heard the lusine's album either.

That Air France EP is perfect. Inspired me to write something about it on my blog, actually (sig...)

Bruegel, you'd probably like this. Old Wiley/Dizzee studio set with Slimzee from 2002, it's the bonus CD from a Sidewinder pack from the time, and it's absolutely amazing. Probably the best grime set I have ever heard.

Fridge - The Sun

Not all that electro, but it's Kieran Hebden's group so I imagine it would interest people in this thread. It's really good.

Here's the review I did for it in Fact Magazine:

QUOTE
Honestly, if this record consisted of an actual fridge attempting to re-interpret the sun, the results still wouldn't be much more abstract than those Kieran Hebden's band have already created. Scattered, tangled hints of rhythm crawl across giant blank canvases, filling the blank space with bells, whistles, drum fills and scratches to build minimal masterpieces: Fridge are practically Mondriancore.

Post-rock is a tired term, and one which can be easily replaced with 'Godspeed clone' half the time, but it's appropriate when describing 'The Sun': its aural environment is vast and open without needing to be over the top epic, and the patterns are abstract to the point of shapelessness. But the real reason this record is such a success is because the individual melodies and instrumental harmonies are so gorgeous. Battles are great (yes, Fridge were around before, but bear with me…), and so was Squarepusher's 'Music is Rotted One Note', but this shoots both of them in soft-focus: improving tenfold the sense of beauty and melody, whilst retaining the unpredictable song structures that made them so interesting in the first place.

I’m a little disappointed by this. It’s fun but it sounds exactly as I imagined it would... booka+mandy+superman.....given the quality of the source material I was hoping they would pull something a bit more wtf out of the bag
Booka Shade & M.A.N.D.Y - Oh Superman

Laurie Anderson - O Superman
The Luscious Phil
I just posted this in the leak thread, but i felt it should be here too.

Helios - Ayres

I love this Ep a whole lot. I only downloaded it two days ago, but I have listened to the opener over ten times... it has vocals on it, but I think they really work well. It still retains that chill vibe that made Eingya one of my favorites from last year. Plus, there is a cover of "In Heaven" which is just brilliant. It'll probably lose him some fans (those that miss his ambient passages), and a gain a few new ones (those that like straight forward delicate songs).

Bruegz with the quality as standard. Buzza is growing on me slowly but very surely, so I look forward to getting this listened. And a vinyl release from him, eh? Not too shabby.

And, while nothing to officially do with 'O Superman', Imogen's 'Hide and Seek' is about the best 2Kx update of that sound I can imagine existing.

And I'll try ripping that Fridge album again tonight, it needs to be heard!

I thought the Villalobos 'blood on my hands' rmx was far superior to that newer one. The lyrics alone (even thought they arent his) make it a more listenable track. Speaking of the lyrics, they are some of the most psychedelic/shamanic lyrics ive heard in a while. It is the language of the earth it is the language of a beast. or Because flesh is weak and forms break down, they cannot last forever.

I'm starting to think Ricardo is a hit or miss kinda guy, i mean its all relative anyway, but for me his output has been going steadily downhill.

Hey Bruegs - do you know where Neil Landstrumm is from? I wonder if 'Big in Chapeltown' is potentially a SubDub reference or something.
Bruegs
He's Scottish. Probably is a subdub reference. Don't know if he’s played it but even at the height of his techno days he threw ragga and d'n'b into his sets. Have you ever been? They've had some solid lineups recently….I’m quite tempted to put in an appearance some time.

I used to go very regularly back in about 2000-01, when it was about 3 quid to get in. Then dubby friends moved away and I didn't bother anymore. In hindsight, I think my first exposure to dubstep was there a few years ago as I can specifically remember thinking 'man, this is like dub, but mixed with techno!'. Unfortunately I reckon that was probably the last time I went.

Really want to start again though, as I've got SubDub-friendly peeps back in Leeds, and there seems to be regular DMZ/Loefah et al involvement nowadays. Still, I'm a tad concerned about the current level of pricing (wouldn't be surprised if it was about a tenner by now) and the level of studentness. I really should go though.

I'd say Fizheur Zieheur, although I don't hate it competely, was the first low point. I had high expectations for that track, what with all the hype, and was disappointed. His Beck rmx from earlier this year was also decent but not what I want from the guy. I like the ricardo that mixes it up a little, these 20 min tracks of repetition and some variation arent the direction I was expecting from him after Achso. The shakleton rmx works for me mainly because of the lyrics but the tracks darkness works in that 'entering a new place' kinda way. I still like the guy, dont get me wrong, I just want a more expanded version of the kinda stuff he was doing with the What's Wrong My Friends EP. Drummolator being a good example; deep flucuating bass and elevator drone sounds give the sensation of movement and the polyrhythmic shuffle behind it all is a lot more inventive than the rigid 4/4 that Soledad runs on.
Bruegs
Its weird how this happens sometimes. My feelings on his recent stuff are almost a total inversion of yours. The beck rmx did nothing for me and WWMF didn't really blow me away while FZ, the BOMH rmx and soledad are amongst my favourite ever tracks by him.

Like I said at the time, Fizheur Zieheur didn't really click with me at first but then heard it in a club and it just hit the spot. Its hard to put my finger on exactly why I dig his expanded canvas stuff so much.....I think his something to do with the mix getting stretched out. In all these tracks, including soledad, the bass fluctuations and ployrythyms that you mention are there. They are more subtle and toned-down but, for me anyway, they are more effective because the effect is accentuated by the contrast with the sustained, rigid template. Just as you get locked into the robotic uniformity he deploys a more human element of expansion and contraction...the tracks start to breathe.

On a slightly different note, the thing I’ve enjoyed most about music this year is the idea exchange, intentional or not, that seems to be occurring at the confluence of techno and dubstep. The BOMH remix is the obvious high point of the exploration of the interface but after hearing a couple of his sets recently Pinch's full length is now my mostly eagerly anticipated release to come. Can't wait for that shit.

Have you all been listening to the new burial? The whole thing is fire but Shutta in particular is a clattersome wonderment.

I'll reserve my judgement for now; I'm d/ling the whole album now based solely on the awesomeness of "Pogo." If the rest of the album can match its intensity, then i might have a new fav "turn your brain off and dance" summer album. Sorry SMD.

No biggie, so we disagree a little about Ricardo, it aint the end o' the world. Been lovin the new Burial. That man is a damn production genius. The multiple reverbs dont get cancelled by the deep bass, he knows how to fill his audio spectrum in a more inventive way than many of the other dubsteppers of the moment. Unfourtunately, here in the states Dubstep still hasnt fully gained acceptance (hype?) but from what ive heard on the internet, the two camps do seem to be sharing eachothers tents.

Hell yes. It's made far more of an immediate impression on me than the album did. I'm starting to agree with the 'it's barely even dubstep' crew at this stage. Soon enough he's going to be in that 'people who just rule' subset.

As I mentioned in the Now Playing thread I’m having a Connaisseur session and felt compelled to share some of the highlights with the masses.....

First up, the reason I started collecting Connaisseur recordings - cheeky chap Jochen Trappe. It's this brand of ''Glitch-Rock-Tech'' that should be causing a stir but, as we all know by now, there is no justice in the world....
Jochen Trappe - Monte

From the flipside of Mark August's Old Joy 12" I think Just Like That actually eclipses the title track. He usually patrols the tech/elec waters but this is a more dubby mnml affair with a distinctly sub-aquatic feel.
Mark August - Just Like That

Daso's Absinthe EP is an essential Connaisseur release and La Fee Verte is the pick of its three tracks for me. Its a tough choice but the hypnotic drum patterns and killer melody just give it the edge...
Daso - La Fee Verte

Ill end where they began - the first release on Connaisseur back in late 05 and maybe still its most influential offering. Deep, soulful build-up, nice payoff...
Patrick Chardronnet - Eve by Day

This is just the tip of the iceberg for what is an amazing little label. If anybody is looking for anything in particular from the catalogue just give me a nudge. My two favourite 12s are probably Trappe's Black Out Barbados and Ripperton's Folks and Flakes neither of which I’ve upped here yet.
nic
Oh thank you so much for the Burial link. Burial floors me. This 12" is fucking astounding. I've been so disheartened by the same-y halfstep plodding of Skream and Benga (and 2nd tier-ers) of late. This is the perfect antidote.

Thanks man. It's so funny because I didnt know what you meant by trains until I listened to it again and realized that you heard the warped conga pattern as a train sound. Its such an awesome concept I totally got caught in your metaphor and heard the ghostly trains too. Glad you liked it tough.
