Full Version: THE SOMB TOP 250 SINGLES FROM '50 - '64

The Good Dr Bill
So, turnout for this was very impressive. I projected about fifteen, at most twenty lists to be submitted, but the final total was a whopping 29, something that hopefully bodes even better for the future decade polls. There's enough for a top 300, but in the interest of keeping the list a little bit exclusive, I'll only be counting down the top 250, which means a single had to get a minimum of two votes (over 120 points) to get in.

So I'm well rested, I'm well fed, and most importantly, I'm back in my old skin. It's time to shake, rattle and roll. So let's get started with those SOUND OPINION MESSAGE BOARDS TOP 250 SINGLES FROM 1950 TO 1964!!!!

is it too late to

CONGRATULATE YOU ON RETURNING TO YOUR OLD NAME???

wait, oh shit, i didn't vote this time.
The Good Dr Bill
oh, before we get going, a couple singles that would have made it but were not included due to being out of the time frame:

Jimmie Rodgers - "Walking By Myself" (the dude died in '33!!!)
The Supremes - "Stop! In the Name of Love"
Jackie Wilson - "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher"

I think everything else that made it was at least relatively kosher.
elc
yay! GDB is back. Makes me long for my old nom de plume. I like the new one too, though.

I've BEEN looking forward to this.

I hope this doesn't affect the results, but Dr. Bill I'm pretty sure this is Jimmy Rogers, the Chess blues guy, not the singing brakeman country guy.
The Good Dr Bill

I suck. Sorry, Jimmy. You would've been #207 or smething.

Kudos, Doc. You just made my friday..

I'll reiderate the point from my list posting. It was pulled from 'other lists' and I did it on the fly. I happen to think Four Seasons are highly underrated. I just went with the one mentioned. That is all.

I can't seperate this song in my mind from the episode of Saved by the Bell where Zack, Slater, and Screech form a doo-wop group (for serious). However, the song sucks, so that's probably all for the best.

At one point in the episode they make an order for food at the Max by singing it doo-wop style. I felt horribly embarassed watching it for some reason.

Meh, the Jerry Lee version of "Good Rockin" >>>>> Elvis version.

No one who has never heard Wynonie Harris' original version should make a statement like that! laugh.gif

(Although Elvis' version was on the $$$, never heard Jerry Lee's.)
Jimmy TKB
Yeah, that's true! His (i originally mistyped Her, but changed it when Don & Dewey busted my balls) version is best. I was listening to Jerry's version earlier this week, so it was on my mind.

PS Ann Cole's "Got My Mojo Workin" smokes the Muddy Waters version, FWIW.
Mitchell
I would have voted for that 'cept it's 1948.
