I've been trumpeting Holland's The Gathering for a while now (mostly on the metal thread), but this is a band who not only is tragically overlooked, but one who actually has a very broad appeal. They started as a so-so doom band, and with singer Anneke van Giersbergen they started to transform the melodic goth side (which has since been imitated by Evanescence, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, etc.), but interestingly, their albums from 1998 to the present refused to stick to the formula set by classic albums as
Mandylion and
Nighttime Birds, instead drawing from decidedly non-metal bands, such as Slowdive, Dead Can Dance, Portishead, and Radiohead. The music is languid, takes its own time, is graceful yet unafraid to turn the guitars up every once in a while, and features who I think is one of the best singers out there in van Giersbergen.
The zip file I posted focuses on their 1998-present period.
"When the Sun Hits" is a faithful, yet gorgeous cover of the classic Slowdive song. Three songs are from the highly underrated 1998 double album
How to Measure a Planet?:
"Rescue Me" is a personal fave, featuring stunning vocals, and a roaring second half highlighted by theremin (which sounds incredible live),
"The Big Sleep" employs more of a trip hop feel, while
"Liberty Bell" is more of a straight-ahead rock tune, again dominated by van Giersbergen's layered vocals.
"Like Fountains", from 2004's
Sleepy Buildings live album, is in my opinion incredible, van Giersbergen shattering the original version (recorded before she joined the band), stripped down to just her, a piano, and waves of feedback. It's a show-stopper.
The band has never had a hit single, yet boasts a strong following worldwide, and while they never top the charts, they consistently garner rave reviews (just look at their
AMG page), have sold half a million albums globally, sell out consistently on three continents, own their own record label, and have complete artistic control over their product. Their live shows are warm and inclusive, which is rare for a progressive-minded band, van Giersbergen is one of the most magnetic lead singers I've ever seen, and the music is much, much more than people might assume just because they receive coverage from metal mags and no one else.
So go on, try it out...you might be pleasantly surprised.
