Lightning Dust - s/t

Pitchfork review - http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/reco...-lightning-dust

Amazing histrionics on this disk. Minimal keyboard parts, some drums, some guitar, a cello or two, but mainly just this chicks voice haunting my dreams. It's a side project from two of the Black Mountain crew.

All you gotta do is look up three or four posts to find the link. Hint: Fine, I'll find it myself!! Quality isn't near as bad as I thought it would be. Very chill album for the most part, this is not your typical New Pornos record.

Edit: Rats, the link is down already! I'll see what I can do when I get home, unless someone beats me to it.

Fridge - The Sun

Not all that electro, but it's Kieran Hebden's group so I imagine it would interest people in this thread. It's really good.

Here's the review I did for it in Fact Magazine:

QUOTE
Honestly, if this record consisted of an actual fridge attempting to re-interpret the sun, the results still wouldn't be much more abstract than those Kieran Hebden's band have already created. Scattered, tangled hints of rhythm crawl across giant blank canvases, filling the blank space with bells, whistles, drum fills and scratches to build minimal masterpieces: Fridge are practically Mondriancore.

Post-rock is a tired term, and one which can be easily replaced with 'Godspeed clone' half the time, but it's appropriate when describing 'The Sun': its aural environment is vast and open without needing to be over the top epic, and the patterns are abstract to the point of shapelessness. But the real reason this record is such a success is because the individual melodies and instrumental harmonies are so gorgeous. Battles are great (yes, Fridge were around before, but bear with me…), and so was Squarepusher's 'Music is Rotted One Note', but this shoots both of them in soft-focus: improving tenfold the sense of beauty and melody, whilst retaining the unpredictable song structures that made them so interesting in the first place.

I stumbled across this album due to the Ryan Olcott connection, the key member in the 90s alt-rock band 12Rods. Now him and a few friends perform under the moniker Mystery Palace, an blip and bleep electronic outfit reminiscent of Junior Boys. "Flags Forward" often sounds a lot like Junior Boys. At other times, it kinda sounds like Caribou, as performed by Junior Boys. Needless to say, fans of the Junior Boys--"Last Exit" in particular--should take notice.

it made it a few weeks ago. And it is totally fantastic. i am sure a search through this thread over the last two week would yield something. if I wasn't at work (and if I had a good internet connection at home, I would up it for you.)

it is actually becoming one of my favorites for the summer.

Whoa crap. Yeah. Listening to it now. Just a few tracks in but I'm quite pleased. These guys just have the gift of melody. And the gift of writing perfect warm-weather music.

As well, it appears that Helios has a new EP coming out, called Ayres. it is fricking awesome... it has vocals on it, but I think they really work well. It still retains that chill vibe that made Eingya one of my favorites from last year. Plus, there is a cover of "In Heaven" which is just brilliant. It'll probably lose him some fans (those that miss his ambient passages), and a gain a few new ones (those that like straight forward delicate songs).

Angels of Light - We Are Him
hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/4wwtru
Michael Gira (the guy behind Swans) with Akron/Family as his backing band.

"the moment I played -we are him- my heart exploded with the feeling 'that voice!!!!!!' and it has done it to me everytime I have ever heard it. From my first cassette of filth to this newest work, michael gira's singing is my favorite gentle violence and lovers strangulation. Now is the best he has ever sounded and I cannot without sounding insanely thrilled express how much this means to me. -we are him- is touching, frightening, wonderfully different and whole." } - Jamie Stewart / Xiu Xiu

"Michael’s shirtless screaming is now finally reborn into something closer to the intensity of Nina Simone than punk rock. The song forms are now clear and strong enough to support vocal performances that sometimes sound like a 25-year-old Michael simultaneously hallucinating and dictating the dark underbelly of the Amercian Dream. And now that this strength and intensity is firmly rooted in tradition it can take on a whole new level of meaning and interplay and understanding that I find simply wonderful. This is not indie rock or Americana, this is authentic American music; or as Gram Parsons said, ' Cosmic American Music ' " - Seth Olinsky / Akron/Family

"Michael Gira is one of maybe ten people in the whole world who inspired me to pick up a guitar and try to write songs in the first place. He continues to be a tremendous influence on me. A new Angels of Light record is always cause for celebration around our house, and though each one is always better than the last, this new one is going to be hard to top… Forget everything you know about Michael Gira and Angels of Light, even if you love everything you know about Michael Gira and Angels of Light (which I most certainly do) - We Are Him is an intimidatingly great album and a highlight in a career of highlights…. Michael Gira taught me that you don't need to play loud to play heavy, you don't need to compromise to be a success to those who really count, and all you need to make rock and roll soup is some piss, some vomit, a little blood, and a few hundred wet cigarette butts." - James Toth / Wooden Wand

"We Are Him is the most assured and relaxed Angels of Light album since the debut, and deserves to be considered alongside Gira's highest peaks. The frightening rage of old Swans surfaces several times, albeit in more bucolic clothing; the contrast is bracing. Lyrically Gira's constantly in-pocket, addressing his subjects with renewed agility, but
also in a very relaxed voice; if De Sade had lived long enough to tell folk tales around a campfire, some of them might have sounded like this. The genuinely playful orchestration - banjos? horns? chimes? slide? check – is by turns charming and perverse, and has a band-of-brethren feel to it that's both ominous and exiting. The title track is like a pure shot of adrenaline. An intimate, unexpected masterpiece." - John Darnielle/The Mountain Goats
