I knew I'd find you in here, Chingram.

It's like those rare mountain springs in the southwest where the desert bighorns cling to. You won't see them much anywhere else except for the springs and the cliffs.
I gave the record a shot. I feel like I'm about to be served German food from some cafe in Hamburg during the late stages of Octoberfest and the smell of vodka, beer, bile, sawdust and wurst are in the air. The waitress is bringing me out a nice plate of hassenpfeffer. But the trouble is, I don't like German food, and I'm German.

It doesn't fit the generic conventions of emo - neither the "real" emo (Rites of Spring, Moss Icon, Native Nod, &c.), nor the "new" emo (Get Up Kids, Braid, &c.) - but, man, that Windmill record is REALLY emotive indie-like. I like the first song alright, but it gets boring after that, descending into a swirling mass of overwrought emotion and Sufjan-like composition without the gorgeous bits that Stevens does so well. Grandiose composition is nothing without a good song to anchor it.

Love that Frisky Dingo avatar. Boosh!
I don't really see the Sufjan comparison unless you're maybe talking "Majesty, Snowbird", Windmill's songs have much more otherworldly feel, especially lyrically, the theme of air travel shouldn't be looked over. Sufjan seems much more organic and personal with his songs. Also, "Asmathic" is crazy gorgeous.

Yeah. I have to say. IF you haven't heard Windmill, give it a listen.
Of all the new bands I've discovered via S.O.M.B., it's the one album that consistently gets repeat plays.
The guy's voice even reminds me of dude from Polyphonic Spree. It's happy indie rock, without being jingle-like and bouncy. MOre of this type of stuff is needed.
For the record, I also don't get the Sufjan comparison.

Ok, I just gave a listen to "Tokyo Moon" on their myspace page, and this is exactly the type of music that we need
less of. His voice is downright grating (this coming from someone who has no problem with Destroyer or Clap Your Hands vocals), the music has been done to death, and the overall mood is getting really stale in 2007. We get it, you're happy. Now kindly shut the fuck up.

The Sufjan comparison was by way of the piano-based grand composition quality. I'm not saying they sound alike, but the methods are similar. (For the record, I like Sufjan a great deal.) I understand the problems with the "happy" part of it, CC, but what bugs me even more is the happiness as facade. There's a sort of heart-on-sleeve medicated happiness to it, the type favored by indie kids who, in order to seem complicated, use their parents' empty prozac bottles as ersatz wallets. Shiny happy people ad absurdum. I don't find this stuff amusing anymore.

"use their parents' empty prozac bottles as ersatz wallets"
wow. are you a PhD student by any chance?
It may be time to put the headphones down and step away from the books for a while.
I'm obviously a new poster to S.O.M.B. (but have contributed quite a bit in the E.P. post), but to CC and SH, isn't hating on music on merits other than just the quality/enjoyability of the music getting really stale itself in 2007?
Also, re-listen to Shiny Happy People. It's a great song.
Out of curiosity, do bands like The Glands rub you the wrong way, too? We could take this over to another thread (as I'm interested), but I could up songs like Call Me Doctor or Swim which blow me away, but which have similar vocal styling and similar upbeat modes (at least in my mind.)

I agree, but I found the music itself - first and foremost - to be distasteful; the scene was secondary. Attacking something because of who likes it is a stale - and pretty lame - form of criticism, but incidentally disliking the whole zeitgeist that surrounds the music disliked in the first place, well that's just B following A. And, no, I'm not a doctoral candidate, but I am pretty fucking smart.

I think I would agree with the criticism. This isn't as powerful as his earlier stuff and there isn't enough weird catchiness to get me like some of the stuff on his last album ("Little Boys", "Chinese Children", etc.). "Seahorse" is a good song, and there are a few others but way too many snoozers.

I agree on both counts.
Beaches & Canyons is easily their best work, wonderful record.
The past two releases by Black Dice haven't done it for me. I feel their attempt to be 'noisy' and somewhat dancey just isn't working. Mostly it feels as though they can't truly commit to either direction and end up being neither here nor there. I prefer them when they are acting a little more organic and fluid.
Pavement Ist Rad
Sep 4 2007, 08:12 PM
Yeah, exactly. This new album feels like pretty normal electronica done with all these little Black Dice quirks. And it's interesting because they're good at making cool noises and always have been. But when it comes down to it, too much of it feels so loop-based and uneventful, and they're just so much better when they're doing the epic krautrock/Boredoms thing like on Beaches & Canyons. I just wanted to hear pounding drums and a dude screaming, goddamnit.
