Hmm. I guess, per capita, the board does better than the general population in terms of listening to metal. But there still seems to be a good deal of the board that's averse to "cookie monster" vocals and metal - anything outside of the Sabbath vibe, at least - in general. Take a look, fr'instance, at its representation on year-end lists so far.
I was referring more to the amount of discussion than number of posters. The SOMB metal contingent is "vocal minority" defined.
Whenever I give any SOMB-recommended metal records a shot, I always shut them off when those cookie monster vocals come in. Sorry, they're just so grating to me, I can't stand them. Maybe that's why I like Tool?
Vocal minority, got it. Up until 3 or 4 months ago, I couldn't handle the standard death/black/doom metal vocals. But then I fell in love with Mastodon's
Leviathan. Although those lyrics are relatively tame compared to what's out there, they opened up the floodgates for me. I'm listening to "Behold the Vastness and Sorrow" off the new Wolves in the Throne Room right now and loving the unholy fuck out of it.
This Ulver album: no cookie-monster vox or what have you. I mean, I'm actually more inclined to call it an ambient album rather than a metal album except for the fact that Ulver pretty much made their name as a black metal band.
