i am so geeked to listen to this maximo park. although i am also worried because "A certain trigger" is one of my favorite debuts of this decade, so this will most likely not live up to my hopes.

You know what would be great? A 44 year old guy pretending to be an obnoxious kid on a car trip!

Sigh, they could have been bigger than the Beatles. The line about Peter Gabriel writing a song everytime something goes wrong made me smile, tho. I actually think I like it better than the previous album.

Clifton Roy & Folkstringer - Live at the Ashbary

IPB Image

Easygoing, bluesy folk music that chugs along like a choo-choo train. Clif and the gang present to us a generous helping of acoustic fingerpickin' meanderings that are perfect for those long lazy drives or smokey social gatherings. This is their first album, and a damn good one at that.

Noteworthy tracks are "The Memphis Kicks"; "Kerouac's Folk Song"; and the albums bonus track, "For a Friend of a Friend", which is both haunting and tragically beautiful.

Amy Winehouse- Back to Black
IPB Image

QUOTE
There are two clear traditions of ‘diva’ in soul music. On one side there’s Diana Ross – and her natural heir, Beyonce – all immaculate polish and surface. And on the other there are the likes of Etta James – a woman whose music reeks of desire and emotion. It’s to this ‘Dark Soul’ tradition that Amy Winehouse aspires - she’s certainly got the voice for it.

And the music. The much praised opening track, “Rehab”, comes across like an obscure northern soul gem, riddled with pathos and melodrama. In fact none of the music here sounds like it was made after 1967.

Much of the rest of this pleasingly short album - eleven three-minute or so tracks – goes on to explore the joyful misery of being young, messy and in love/lust. And Amy doesn’t paint a particularly pretty picture of herself; she plays the cuckold on “Just Friends”, and gets caught out by her ‘lickle carpet burns’ on the fabulous “I’m No Good”.

But hey, she suffers for her sins. The title track, owing much to the sonic heritage of Phil Spector and Scott Walker, is a tortured monster of a track - Amy displaying the sort of vocal depth that Marc Almond has always dreamed of.

The second half of the album isn’t quite as good as the first, but that’s a minor gripe. One of the best UK albums of the year, with the added advantage that you'll be able to pick it up at the local supermarket checkout...

Don't know if anyone is interested in this or not, but I dig the smokey jazz album every once in awhile. Its a nice change and if your in the Joss Stone mood, this is a nice counterpart.

A lot of these songs were on the "Basement II Demos" but they'll be cleaned up and just sound better in general. Plus, double LP?! I'm getting it just for songs like "High Times," "Going Nowhere," "Georgia Georgia," and the other version of "Pretty Mary K" (it's much better than the figure 8 version. It was out on what were called just the "Basement Demos" but called "Everything's Okay").

Here's an article link if anyone's interested. Not much to it, but here it is:

But Jesus Christ I would do anything to hear them.

If you guys don't have the Basement 2 Demos, i can fish them for you... Said demos include most of what's on "New Moon"... Possibly all of it.

The Dan Deacon album is amazing, and if you're knocking it, you're not giving it the full attention. Or you don't play it when you're high.

Cocorosie... Mmmmmmm... "Japan" is so good, but i can't figure out why.
