i just wanted to point out that, the new Silverchair (at least a few songs into it,) is pretty interesting, but slightly awkward. but Silverchair definitely get the "i did not expect this band to last this long, and actually become interesting" - award.
I haven't listened to the new album yet but this is a pretty good description of later Silverchair stuff (Neon Ballroom/Diorama). I remember being 11 or 12 and being up at my friend's cottage when
Frogstomp had just come out, we had that thing cranked most of the weekend (I'm sure
Throwing Copper and
Sixteen Stone came for the trip as well). I think they've really tried to grow and evolve as a band (as opposed to say Live and Bush), when they probably could have kept doing the same thing over and over again like those bands. Their more recent albums have been pretty hit or miss in my opinion, with some very good songs and some that just don't work very well. These guys were like 15 when Frogstomp, came out as well if I remember, they could still have some good stuff in them if they keep progressing and trying new things.
see that's the thing. by my count, none of them are in their thirty's yet, so I feel like they have still plenty of time to really find their voice... it just so happened we, the audience, got to hear them at their most immature and derivative.
my biggest gripe with the new one is that they took five years, and you can hear how they have really grown, but they still do not get how to make a great record. some of these songs are fantastic, but some of them are just ill-formed. but i still have faith in them, because even though over their ten year life span, they have yet to make a great album, they have this undeniable feeling of promise.

Word. Picked it up via other avenues, so, by that order, have kept my mouth shut. But - whether you like it or not - a new Throbbing Gristle album is kind of a big deal. Hideous cover, though.

Ok. I'll have it up in a bit.
Do you have
20 Jazz Funk Greats? This is requisite stuff - if you don't have it, ask for that album in the O.G. fish thread as a little reminder for my currently drunken self.

The story of Silverchair is more interesting than their music unfortunately. Their newest single ("Straight Line", I think) has been played to death on radio here for the past few weeks, and was interesting for the first couple of listens.
Considering what the band (or more importantly, lead singer Daniel Johns) has been through to get to this stage (anorexia, crippling arthritis that rendered him unable to move), anything they can put out is a bonus to fans.
But I can't feel too sorry for him. After all, he gets to bang Natalie Imbruglia night after night and I don't.

sorry, but i don't want to deal with it anymore. also, i don't think this is the album anyway. from what i have read online, it seems to be a collection of tracks/demos that people have already heard (and discussed here), some of which will be on the album and some won't.
