I'm trying to put a call in to Queensland, Australia. I'm getting dead silence (no ringtone), then a hangup click, and yet my calling card is telling me the call is going through.
Do phones not ring down there? what's the deal?

I don't know if this is what's happening or not, but I had a friend who was working in Africa for a while. She would call me, my caller ID would say "unknown call," I would answer it and hear only silence, but it sounded like someone was there. She would call a couple times in a row, so i thought someone was pranking me, but it was just my friend trying to call me. Apparently it takes a few seconds for the call to be completed or something. I finally got an email from her that said "For God's sake, stop cursing and hanging up on me - the person you think it pranking you is me so just be patient and wait!" oops.
Maybe you just have to give it longer to connect?

Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the world's smallest continent and a number of islands in the Southern, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the French dependency of New Caledonia to the northeast, and New Zealand to the southeast.
The mainland of Australia has been inhabited for more than 42,000 years by Indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and by European explorers and merchants starting in the seventeenth century, the eastern half of the mainland was claimed by the British in 1770 and officially settled through penal transportation as the colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were successively established over the course of the 19th century.
On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a Federation, and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth Realm. The capital city is Canberra, located in the Australian Capital Territory. The current national population is around 20.6 million people, and is concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.

Thanks. I hope that's not the case because i'm calling some pool company about a chlorinator, mostly because school sucks balls. and i need to know how much it costs. But that still wouldn't explain that i'm not hearing a ring on my end. I'll try again later.
Also, I agree with everyone in this thread on all accounts. You can't find shit like wombats in north america.

It's 1:50 pm there now. If you were trying to call them at 4:30 pm CST today (according to the first post of the thread), it would have been 8:30 am there. Maybe they just weren't open yet? Then again, that wouldn't explain why you're not getting any rings or even an answering machine.

In Australia, when you flush the toilet the water swirls in the opposite direction.
In Australia you will be welcomed by the locals if you use words like: crickey, G'day, mate, barbee
When engaged in coversation with Australians, try to say something like "shame about the Crocidle Hunter". They will know you feel their pain.
Ask lots of questions about Nicole Kidman, INXS, AC/DC and Russel Crowe

True, but apparently it still happens based on their plumbing or some shit. but that's just what i've heard. not that it matters at all.
Thanks for the help some of you,
it wasnt the time thing.. i knew it was 8:30 so i tried again at 9:30 and 10. And on multiple phones. I think it was the other thing about the delay time, because i never did hear an answer, but they finally returned my emails after about five calls. Probably to make me stop.

I live in Queensland. Trust me - the phones ring. Where exactly is the place you're trying to call? It is now 9:41 am Friday morning here.

Only non-Americans can get away with the "whilst." Love it.
My friend brought me back some VB when she went to Australia. It was yummy. I wish they imported it here. You can have all the Fosters that they ship to America, and we'll take your VB. Thanks!
