This one jumped the shark a while back.. no surprise here.
Uncle Remus
Did they cancel it immediately or will it run out the season? Remember when this was a hot show?

I love it when big shows just hang on too goddamn long. Like "ER"
The Good Dr Bill
might be time to start working with the DVDs, I guess.
Angrimorfee
It may have lasted longer if they had the "election" last November. A shame.
BobtheSquid
This season is actually extremely good.
Mitchell
So who belives this, as claimed, was decided before John Spencer died?

I do. The ratings were in the tank well before he died. He's not that essential to the show.

The article said they will finish the season... it mentioned this season had good crtical acclaim but that the move to Sunday nights killed it. I hate when they move shows... for instance... the X Files was meant to be on Friday Nights.. not Sundays.

I heard a long time ago that when a show moves to a new day it usually means cancellation. The obvious exception is if a show moves to a network's most popular time (Thursday for NBC, etc). Not sure how true this is. NBC is about to move several other shows to less popular times. I have never seen this show at all.

well, it means it hasn't found a good timeslot fit, which usually means it is on the downward slide

if the west wing has to get cancelled, this is the perfect time. it's seen its highs and lows (just like any presidency), has served its full two terms, and is going out on a good note. although, as with ER, it's disappointing that a once solid show with indefinite life potential would run out of steam like this. i'm still waiting for the show that can survive the slow departure of its original cast while maintaining quality
Mitchell
West Wing R.I.P. tonight then.

i can't read this thread, b/c i'm scared someone revealed plot details. i will contribute this irrelevant anecdote, however:

in lieu of getting drunk last night (i graduated college), i sat in bed in my pajamas and watched the final West Wing season 1 episodes (on DVD). I got to the cliffhanger of the season finale at 12:45am, 15 mins before the local video store closed. Ran out in my pajamas to get the start of season 2. Stopped by bars on the way home to visit graduation parties; stayed 15 mins. Decided West Wing was a better investment of my time.

this is why DVDs series are great, and why stupid college drunks are not. amen.

I've watched the show on and off. I definitely think the show rebounded this season, but unfortunately, the viewers were long gone. I like the show, but some of those early episodes were pretty simple and condescending, like the big 9/11 episode.

In my opinion the only West Wing season that was anything less than phenomenal was season five. Season Six was amazing (just bought the dvd set, and watched it in less than four days). Seven was fantastic.
Best show ever, is now over and I am a little sad inside.

No way. Drama's always better.
without_opinion
not always. in the interest of the SOMB:
sopranos drama >>>> personal drama of the SOMB females >>>> network TV drama
le chaton
sorry. i don't watch the sopranos.

i don't agree with that at all. i thought he was the glue to the show. his relationships with Bartlett and Josh were the glue to the show.

i agree. begrudgingly. it's a show i wish would go on forever. but i wonder if the new cast would it make it the dramatic version of "Joey."

once Josh and Donna got busy in the sack, you couldn't really go back to what was one of the better emotional relationships of the show.

I've only ever seen reruns on late nite tv, starting a couple of years ago. What I saw was good, but pissed me off at the same time--since the comparison of that administration with the real one is maddening...and there's something really crappy about the fact that television can manufacture a scenario so perfect and unattainable and rub our noses in it.

I'm sure some viewers believe that sort of widespread intelligence & integrity in an administration is possible, but in reality the writers are just helping to dumb these people down.

it did decline in quality after sorkin left, but rebounded nicely. the last season was quite good and i thought they easily could've kept going

the very first episode is remarkably good. most shows don't hit their stride until at least the second SEASON

see this is just a silly complaint. so what if a television show is unrealistic, it is a television show. It may set a very high standard for our leaders, but why cant we expect more from them?
being too idealistic never hurt anyone.

true, first season has possibly some of their best stand alone episodes (Take This Sabbath Day is perfection), but second season was when they really nailed a brilliant story line that pervaded throughout the season, and made almost every episode essential.

Second best season of television, only the second season of Sports night is better.
