Compared to something like Spun, RFAD really had characters you cared about. Again, much of this is thanks to Hubert Selby, Jr. Hmm, maybe I'll watch this again tonight.
Just listening to the CD is harrowing enough!

yeah, while it was a great movie, it's not something i could sit through again. that crescendo of amputation, cold turkey detox, double-ended dildo competitions, and forced feedings in the psych ward...nauseating.

Yeah, everyone else basically covered it. It's horrifying and oppressive. I've seen it twice, and just thinking about it freaks me the hell out. But really, it's an amazing film.

i cried when the movie was at that fast forwarded "don't do drugs or this'll happen to you" segment at the end. probably the most disturbing part of a movie i've ever seen. has chaos totally trumped.

I found it boring. I thought the scenes that were over the top shocking were just ploys to trick the viewers into thinking they were seeing something mind blowing. If you forget about the dildo scene and the whole ending sequence, the movie isn't all that interesting.

Feb 19 2006, 01:14 AM
you didn't find the gradual descent of the characters interesting? they all started out somewhat normal (ambitious, healthy, etc) and then slid into druggie scumbags. i love drugs, but that movie definitely made me monitor my intake. dildos are cool and all, but i don't want to end up ass to ass at some board of trade party because i'm addicted to speed or coke.

I didn't like it. By the time I saw it (video as a new release), most of the film felt like a cliche. At this point in time, t's just too easy to have nauseating imagery and shakey camera work, and then call it art in the name of addiction.
I think the best drug/addiction movie I've seen wasn't even truly a movie. "The Corner," which was a six hour mini series on HBO, is spectacular. It also has some distubing imagery, but it isnt' distubing imagery for the sake of disturbing imagery; and the message/narrative are much clearer and more poignant.

I don't think any movie that you don't want to watch again can be called 'great'. RFAD is an inflated 'Don't Do Drugs' PSA. It says nothing of substance and would have been much better off as a short subject rather then as a feature.

Hmmm, can't agree with you on this one. There are plenty of great movies I don't want to watch over and over again
because they are so effectively disturbing - Boys Don't Cry, Schindlers List- even Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer come to mind.
As far as RFAD having no substance, the decline of the characters, particularly the Mother, the skill of the filmaking and the quality of the performances trump it's "anti drug" theme. I found a film like Crash to be a far more heavy handed in that regard.

Don't disagree that Crash (or even arguably Traffic) are more heavy-handed, but my exact problem with Requiem is that I don't think it should be considered "skill[ed]" film making. Ever since Trainspotting and the Blairwitch Project, it's become way to common (and easy) to just conjure up some random disturbing imagery; use a shakey hand held camera (preferably with a fish eye lense); and then make the audience nautious and call it art.
Hell, I could put a camera on a sit-and-spin probably make an audience puke after 10 minutes; but my ability to elicit this guttural reaction does not make me Orson Welles.

The flash-shot drug taking scenes are certainly inspired, and if the time elapsed shot of Ellen Bursten cleaning her apartment in a speed induced frenzy, or her living room turing into a nightmarish gameshow aren't the result of skilled filmaking, then what the hell is skilled filmaking?
Besides that, it takes a skilled filmaker to bring a good performance out of even the most seasoned actor.

I don't think BDC or Henry are great films...just unpleasant. SL I've seen countless times and never mind watching again. King Lear is disturbing to read but I return to it time and again. etc...

Used to be my favorite movie. The Kronoss Quartet adds some very fitting music. I think it is well acted, the story is involving and it is dark and drab. Most friends dont want to watch it again. I've kinda gotten away from it because of what attracted me in the first place. the camera work and montages seem well done but too gimmicky now. still one hell of a movie. never read the book but Last Exit to Brooklyn was a good book so Im sure it was good. Best drug movie for sure in my opinion. then agian most people think my favorite movie (Magnolia) is an overblown soap opera with a pointless twist ending. eh, to each his/her own.
