Hey all,

My closest friend is getting ready to have a firstborn child with his wife at the end of next month or early April. This is really the first time I've even had to shop for a baby, so I'm little clue-less. They have a shower planned and I'd like to get them something extra in addition to the proper gift I will be giving.

Considering that some of you have children (shudder!) I would appreciate some input. Is there anything cool I could get to entertain the infant, or is there something important that is typically left off of a shower list that I could get them to heip out?

Thanks dudes!

QUOTE(Bloodshot Website)
Over the years we’ve been sad to see so many of our fans sucked into the swirling vortex of parenthood. One night we’re closing the bar together and nine months later they are never heard from again. The Bloodshot crew is here to tell you that we can relate and don’t despair. Many of our artists have kids and it hasn’t stifled their urge to get down. (Okay it might have stifled their urge to "get down" but when I say "get down" I’m talking about going out and having a good time.) These parents prove that having jr. and even his little brother or sister doesn’t have to be the end of their social lives. So what if you have to perch the little tyke on the end of the bar? Give ‘em a few pretzels to suck on and you’re good to go.

Alright, I realize that not everyone is comfortable taking up an extra stool at the bar with a car seat. While these socially conscious folks may be a lost cause as far as representing at Bloodshot shows, we aren’t going to let that stop us from recruiting a new generation of fans. On this release we hit you with twenty-six songs that don’t suckle; songs full of cowbells, wolf calls, banjos, bongos, hiccups and rubber duckies intended for the amusement of children and arrested adolescents everywhere. Bringing them to life are a dazzling array of roots rock heroes like, Rosie Flores, Kelly Hogan, Alejandro Escovedo, Robbie Fulks, The Handsome Family, Waco Brothers, Cornell Hurd, Jim & Jennie and the Pinetops, Jane Baxter Miller, Asylum Street Spankers, Rex Hobart, Jon Rauhouse, Split Lip Rayfield, The Meat Purveyors, Freakwater, Trailer Bride, Kim Lenz, and more. Together they tell us it’s tough to be a kid sometimes, bath time is fun, bodily functions are funny and it’s good to be different.

Before you even know it, your little tyke is going to be all grown up and coming home with the latest record from Limp Bizkit or Puffy and you’ll be left wondering how many other ways you’ve failed them as a parent. Don’t let that happen. Instead, think of this as their musical "Headstart" program. See you on the playground.

Avec, you could give the parents a night at a spa, romantic hotel or a bed & breakfast, to use a few months after the baby's born. Usually that's something they wouldn't initiate because it's too self-indulgent & expensive, but if given as a gift, they will likely use (& appreciate) it. If she's nursing though, they may not use it for awhile. Or just a romantic dinner for the two of them would be nice--and you could offer to babysit smile.gif.

These Zolo toys are really cool and include all the features for optimizing cognitive development.

Or, the toddler with everything could probably use a Calder pull toy IPB Image

2 stories I figured I'd throw out there....

When we had my son, the all-time greatest gift (no contest at all) was an automatic rocking swing (I don't know the official name). Conrad would just nap in it while his mother and I could keep a close eye on him in the living room. It's only practical for the first 9 months, but it was a lifesaver.

When my wife's niece turned one, we were just starting to date, and I was much more of a music nerd than I am now. I figured that what I would do would be to buy the child a cd that came out in that year, and that I'd do that every year for her birthday. In my mind, it would be a kind of musical timeline that she could follow when she got older. So, I went out and bought her Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The day of the party, my wife's sister opened the gift in front of about 20 of her closest friends (most of them also parents). When people saw I had given a one year old a Wilco CD, they all looked at me like I was a fucking idiot. But I stand by this. She's gotten a new CD every year.

Babysitting is definitely the best gift you can give, especially during the first 6 months or so. But that's assuming they'll let anyone who isn't grandma take care of the kid.

Really, as long as you don't buy booties, you'll be fine.

EVERYONE buys baby clothes for the first 6-9 mos. If you must buy clothes, buy them something they can use a year after the birth. They will never ever use the all of the baby clothes they will receive. Never.
velocity
^^ True, and babies grow quick. The size I always buy is 18 mos--because a big baby can wear it after about 10-12 mos, and get a lot of use out of it before it's outgrown.

For a first-time mom, it's always good to get something for her, like the spa idea mentioned earlier, or some comfy clothes...it has to be quite a shock to switch so suddenly from everything being all about her to everything being all about baby, so a little non-baby gesture like that would probably go a long way.

you guys have been a great help, really. all this stuff is a little overwhelming even for me, I can only imagine what it's like to be an expecting parent.
