I feel a bit better now after having seen the match. Christian's reaction leads me to believe that bigger things are in store and this is all part of a bigger work. [/mark]

TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.
Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.
Savage was 58.
Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh."
UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."
Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.
Savage's wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision -- but survived with "minor injuries." She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.
According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.
An investigation into the accident is underway.

Savage was my first favorite wrestler in WWE, and a major reason I even tuned into Vince's product in the 1980s after my brief flirtation with Hulkamania went south. He was also the first heel I ever really embraced (guess who I sided with in the main event of WM V?)
Just a massively entertaining, influential character who, yeah, had his problems, but I always held out hope that we'd see him again in some capacity.

One of the greatest of all time and imo a groundbreaker who was as responsible as anyone for setting a new standard in match pacing and speed. He's on my personal Mt. Rushmore along with Michaels, Foley and Taker.
Personally, watching him win the tournament at WMIV with my grandfather was how I became a wrestling fan.

I wasn't really in to pro wrestling during Macho Man's prime, but the matches I saw of his from the 80s were something else. Truly someone the industry will miss.
And what adds to this tragedy is that he was in the process of rebuilding his relationship with Vince and the WWE. I would have expected him to be a part of the HoF in the coming years. Now we'll never get to see that.
The guy definitely deserved his chance to shine and receive that recognition from his peers and the fans.

i will certainly remember him for his WWF 80's stint, but also for his epic feud with Diamond Dallas Page.
Heart attack at 58? Another example of the tolls steroid and drug abuse takes on your body. You gotta wonder if other wrestlers his age are counting down their days.

Back in high school I used to go watch a small pro wrestling organization called the LWF. As a kid, it was exciting stuff, but looking back on it there was nothing truly special about the company. It was just a bunch of local kids trying their hand at something they loved. There was one person in the company that I do vividly remember watching as a kid, though, and that person was CM Punk. He had something those other kids didn't have...talent and real drive. He excelled in the ring and I remember enjoying watching him drop chump on their heads in gyms around Lemont, IL.
Having said that, watching Punk ascend over the years has been a true blast for me. Seeing this guy I in a way grew up with become an internet darling through Ring of Honor to seeing him sign with the WWE, then having him win his first world title...it's all been fun. Even when I haven't religiously followed the product, I love checking in to see what Punk is up to.
And now he is in the middle of an excellent, and most likely extremely short, program with John Cena. And tonight that program hit one of the highest peaks I've seen in ages in pro wrestling. That promo Punk cut on Raw was one of the most scathing and jaw-dropping things I've heard. He was intense and cocky and didn't care whose name he threw out there, be it Hogan or Paul Heyman. Honestly this is the sort of thing that I could see changing the business and having a big impact on things. I doubt it will, but I could see how it would get the wheels in motion for a big change.
If you haven't see the promo, check it out here. It towed the line perfectly between shoot and scripted work so flawlessly.

I was just about to post about that promo, one of the best I've seen in years. Don't let it fool you though, folks - it's a "worked shoot." Nothing gets on TV without Vince knowing about it, though they're amping up the intrigue with Punk being "suspended" and having his profile removed from wwe.com. Really curious about what's next.
And, yeah, I watched him in LWF, too. Actually "wrestled" him once in someone's backyard, as I used to be friends with a few of those guys. LWF actually started in a former friend's front yard after WM 9, and yeah, Punk was there.

It's been kind of cool to see WWE slowly acknowledge the IWC in their works. The CM Punk promo totally made me mark out and part of that was because it played on prior knowledge I had of Punk and his dissatisfaction with the company, stuff that hasn't exactly been played out on TV. This was all very well done and now I'm starting to question whether he actually will leave the company or not, which is a good thing if I'm kept guessing. Makes me feel like I'm nine years old again. I guess it still is real to me, dammit.

A few weeks back some friends and I bought tickets on a whim to this Chicago PPV, not having any clue what is going on. Now I'm really amped up to see this match and just be a part of the crowd. Place is going to be a madhouse, for sure.

whoa, you got tix?!?! have a blast with that.
worked shoot or not, doesn't matter. this was unbelievable. anytime you watch something in pro-wrestling where it makes you think they are going off script or someone is doing a shoot, that moment of doubt makes it all worth while.
CM Punk solidified himself as one of the greatest wrestlers on the mic of all time. Appropriate that he was rocking the Stone Cold shirt.

Just read the Money In The Bank results online. Sounds like it came off awesome on TV with CM Punk frantically escapingat the end. They've guaranteed that a lot of folks will tune in tomorrow.
Also, did my eyes deceive me or did Daniel Bryan just win MITB?
HewlettsDaughter
Jul 18 2011, 10:04 AM
I was there last night. First and foremost, the atmosphere was unlike anything I've been a part of. That crowd was so into the PPV pretty much from start to finish.
The opening MITB match was excellent. Having never been in the crowd for a large-scale ladder match, it was really something to behold. The crowd was in love with Sheamus which really surprised me. Then again, Chicago loves the Irish, so I guess that shouldn't be too much of a shock. When Daniel Bryan Danielson climbed the ladder and won it all, the place erupted. An awesome surprise to kick off the evening.
The Raw MITB match was also great...possibly better. It felt as though the Raw match had a lot more high spots (Bourne's shooting star press onto everyone outside the ring was really fun to watch). While I'm not a Del Rio fan, I sure did love him unmasking Rey and chucking it into the crowd before winning the match.
The Christian/Orton match was a lot of fun. While my friends disagreed with the end of the match, they (and everyone else there) loved Orton's two RKO's on the announce table. At this point the crowd was as amped up as any and were ready for the main event.
And that CM Punk/Cena match killed. Seriously. Everything about it from start to finish was fantastic. Cena actually showed that he can put on a great match and do more than just six moves. And Punk was Punk. I've not seen anyone so over. Any time he moved, the crowd popped. Seriously, this match was so fun. The ending with McMahon coming out was semi-expected, but I'm glad they didn't go the screwjob route. Also extremely glad they didn't go the Del Rio "cashing in" route (which I expected after he won the briefcase). Watching Punk run out through the crowd and everyone just celebrate around him was well worth it.
Did anyone happen to see the PPV on TV? I'm genuinely curious as to how it looked on the air. During the introductions for the Cena/Punk match, I could barely hear the ring announcer or their themes. It was that loud. I really wonder what it looked like to someone at home. I read people saying they could tell the crowd was hot. But was it that noticeable? I gotta check this out...

http://youtu.be/2NAvDqglbAEThis just keeps getting better.
HOWEVER - I wonder if this continued apparent catering to the IWC (between the Punk win and Daniel Bryan winning Smackdown's MITB, this is a banner week for us!) is ultimately a good move in the long run for the WWE. Until Monday, the ratings for RAW during the PPV buildup were down - perhaps because the average Cena-loving fan didn't want to see their hero kinda look dumb while the "bad guy" Punk talked about a whole bunch of stuff they didn't understand. Mock if you want, but these people are the majority, and the merch buyers. Us Internet people are vocal, but in the minority, and we don't necessarily buy merch or move the needle on ratings and buys. From a business perspective, who do you think they're going to prefer to pitch the product toward?
And yeah yeah yeah "What about the Attitude Era?" There was a bigger audience then, and very serious competition from WCW that motivated most of those decisions, just to be brief. Times were different then.

Just wow. For the first time in years, I'm actually intrigued to see where things actually go. I'm not so sure what took them so long to incorporate the Internet into storylines. This is a new era and the traditional ways have not been cutting it for some time.

You'd think that, but they've also been utterly ignorant for the most part of the whole Zack Ryder phenomenon. (As Punk mentions in that vid!) Of course, in that case it could more be obstinate "WE decide who to push, not you wrestlers or those fans!" thing.

well the Edge/Hardy thing developed from the internet (Hardy's videos/posts) but it sure felt like WWE dropped the ball on that.

i'm curious to hear how the return of Kevin Nash happened. Very impressed it stayed a secret esp in the internet age.
HewlettsDaughter
Aug 15 2011, 10:47 AM
His return just sort of happened. After Punk won the belt and was celebrating, Nash sort of popped up out of nowhere, jackknifed him and then ran out through the crowd. No explanation given. Then Del Rio came out and "cashed in," becoming the new champ.
I thought it was a pretty great ending because it left a lot of new questions. First off, you have Cena, who had his foot on the rope when he was pinned. So technically the match should have continued on. Then you have Nash...was he hired to be a bodyguard of sorts for Del Rio? Did HHH put him up to it? Or does he have his own independent reasons for coming back? A whole lot was left in the air after last night and I loved it.
Diesel
Aug 15 2011, 11:55 AM
My theory is that Johnny Ace or Stephanie paid off Nash to take out Punk, as they knew everyone would think HHH put him up to it, since we all know our Kliq history (and for those viewers who don't, I'm sure Punk will explain it all...). So they both take out Punk AND make HHH look crooked.
The rest of the ending was a little awkward, but Nash's run-in was definitely a shock/pretty neat. We'll have to see what happens next.
HewlettsDaughter
Aug 15 2011, 02:18 PM
I'm still waiting/assuming for them to reveal Ace as the "annonymous GM." It would make the most sense.
And I'm going with the feeling that ADR paid Nash off to jump Punk. We'll see, though. Should make for a few good weeks of TV.
