this is from NME. the same thing is on the official site too.
i'm very excited about this. can't wait to hear it. and "you don't know what love is (just do as you're told) is probably the best name for a song ever. well at least this year.

QUOTE
The Detroit duo have titled the record 'Icky Thump', and have just finished mixing and recording it at Nashville, Tennessee's Blackbird Studio.

A release date for the follow up to 2005's 'Get Behind Me Satan' has not yet been set, but a posting on the band's website says: "We are doing our best (whatever that is) to release the album as soon as corporately possible. And though we are tired, worn, weary, hungry, cold and left without an ounce of nutrition amongst ourselves, we are in the midst of planning performance type shows around the world."

The tracklisting includes:

'Catch Hell Blues'
'Little Cream Soda'
'Rag And Bone'
'Clicky Bump'
'You Don't Know What Love Is (Just Do As You're Told)'
'I'm Slowly Turning Into You'

that was biblical wasn't it?

anyway i'm not sure about 'icky thump' but 'hecky thump' is like an expression of surprise/ dissapointment said with a sigh, generally prefaced by 'eeeeeh', similar phrases are 'eeeeh, gordon bennet' and 'eeeeh, blood and sand', i think hecky thump can have more positive connotations than those though
Nixon
i'm gonna start saying "eeeeh, gordon bennet." that rules.
r.i.p.
yeah, unless there's some New England regionalism that I'm unaware of, there's nothing in American English like this.

i want to know who gordon bennet was and how he got honoured by becoming a term of frustration, i wonder if wiki will tell me

whadduya know, he was american laugh.gif ;

QUOTE(wiki)
Hypothetical origins of the term

According to Cassell's Dictionary of Word & Phrase Origins, the phrase is a euphemism for the blasphemous expression "Oh God!". A famous newspaperman James Gordon Bennett, Jr. is said to have originally inspired the particular form of this phrase.

Bennett — the son of James Gordon Bennett, senior — was a New York newspaper proprietor and playboy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries who became widely known in North America and Europe for his extravagant lifestyle and shocking behaviour. He has been described by the Dictionary of American Biography as having been "one of the most picturesque figures of two continents". For example, he arrived late and drunk at a party in the mansion of the family of his fiancιe, socialite Caroline May, and then urinated into a fireplace in full view of his hosts. The engagement was broken off immediately, and the subsequent notoriety caused Bennett to move to France. This incident appeared in the Guinness Book of World Records under "Greatest Engagement Faux Pas." [1]

A variant of the newspaper-mogul story is given by Anglophile American writer Bill Bryson as follows:
James Gordon Bennett, a newspaper baron, liked to announce his arrival in a restaurant by yanking the tablecloths from all the tables he passed. He would then hand the manager a wad of cash with which to compensate his victims for their lost meals and spattered attire. Though long forgotten in his native land, Bennett and his exploits were once world famous, and indeed his name lives on in England in the cry, "Gordon Bennett!"

now for hecky/icky thump

Origin

Luke 4:5-8 (King James Version):

4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

4:6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

4:7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

I've read two thoughts on why White selected this title: 1) because he loves playing off those American Blues archetypes which include the ol' deal with the devil, and 2) it's a slight wink at the biblical phrase, removing the thee, suggesting ol' Beelzaebub should affix himself to their posterior, if you know what I mean.......

gah! no mention of icky, but hecky is pretty much the northern english phrase i described

Taken from PFork...

The White Stripes have completed the recording and mixing of their sixth album. It is entitled:
"Icky Thump" ... and is their first album to include a title track, which curiously (and not ironically) has the same words in it's name. Though some residents of northern England might almost recognize the title, the Stripes stress they are spelling it wrong intentionally just for "kicks" and "metaphors", and to avoid a possible lawsuit from the estate of Billy Eckstine.

It's a phrase that I have only come across in hardcore American Evangelical circles. In this form of Christianity, people feel that they have a literal power over Satan. These Christians believe that they are baptized in the Holy Spirit, and once that happens, Satan is powerless against them, they have already "won the battle". So, they say "Get Behind Me Satan" as a way of emphasizing that they, through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit via Jesus and Yahweh, have power over Satan and can tell him to go away and get behind them. I believe from reading his interviews and reading his lyrics, that Jack White, although maybe not practicing or whatever, is a believer in this form of Christianity.

By the way, I am a huge Stripes fan and very happy they are doing this.
Artem
ah
thanks for explanations, guys.
Jimmy TKB
Love me some White Stripes, hopefully it has some extremely distorted blues slide guitar like that Devil's Night boot track. When Jack White does blues covers, he means that shit. Looking forward big time.
Artem
there's a short in-studio video in the news section on their site. check it out.

The Goodies (70s UK TV show) did an episode about a fictional Lancashire martial art called 'Ecky Thump' in which the participants attacked each other with black pudding (blood sausage). It's famous-ish here cos one guy literally died laughing watching it - laughed so much his heart couldn't cope.

There's a short piece about this (the album) in the new Mojo in which White explains that it comes from him not being able to pronounce the weird local things that his wife says. She is from one of the old mill towns in Lancashire I think, Preston or somewhere.

I'm excited for this. Get Behind Me Satan wasn't a total triumph, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Ideally, they'd take it back a little bit and mine the same sort of ground they did with De Stijl.
SpacemanSpiff
Oh man, this sounds awesome. White Stripes=favorite band. Also, Jack's at his best when he's goofy. Come on Lollapalooza!!!!!
Hans Christian Anderson
oh this is fucking awesome. 2007 is seriously shaping up to be the best year ever.
More Drama
I can't really back it up yet, but I feel like Jack White is about to go into an Elvis Costello sort of shift from pop success to "interesting" records.

(Which would be unfortunate 'cos you know which ones I like.)

From NME's sneak listen:

'Icky Thump'
Starts with Meg on pounding bass drums, then breaks into an experimental, heavy sounding 70s riff, that at points varies from a 'Black Math'-like rock sound to electronic sounding, processed sections. The vocals almost never repeat themselves as and there's little conventional structure. Jack's vocals are heavily treated in the production with one of the few clear lyrics in this mainly instrumental track, going, "Why don't you kick yourself our, you're an immigrant too".

'What Love Is'
A more classic sounding White Stripes song recalling 'White Blood Cells'-era. It's a strong, melodic love song with Jack singing the following for the chorus: "You're not hopeless or helpless/I hate to sound cold/But you don't know what love is/You do as you're told".

'Conquest'
The biggest departure of the three tracks previewed. It's an unexpected mix of big guitars and a bold horn section. Boasting a Spanish, Latin feel, it's a third person storytelling song about a serial womaniser, who finally meets his match. "Conquest, he was out to make a conquest" sings Jack. "She was just another conquest, but the hunted became the huntress".

Generally the feel with these tracks, is the band are back to big sounding guitars, but allying that with some very experimental, almost electronic sections.

Interestingly the three tracks were accompanied by an in the studio video of the duo recording the songs, and teasingly one section even feature a bagpipe player, though the instrument didn't appear on any of the tracks.

why can't jack just rip off "let it bleed" for once

i once saw them do a set of all Yarbirds covers, when they guested with Jeff Beck in London a few years ago. So I guess they aren't above the idea but it's more likey to happen live. Yes, it was fucking awesome.
UselessRocker

Wow. This came out of nowhere, didn't it? I'm still excited by news of a White Stripes album. I get the feeling Jack might start feeling a little confined by his classicist view on things, which is kind of a shame 'cause there are still directions you can go in with that being your thing. But it's good to be open to things. Kevin Barnes was one of those "I don't like anything made after the 1960's" guys, then he started listening to current stuff and not being all 1960's Guy about stuff and Of Montreal's records have become better.
Artem
that's what i like about the white stripes too. the news you get is totally out of the blue. it's like "hey, all. we've just recorded a new album in 12 days. it's gonna be out very soon."

i feel like if jack wanted to keep music with the white stripes he'd take a step back. i can't see how an album in the vein of "white blood cells" after "satan" or "elephant" could hurt at all. hell if he just did what he does best with a single acoustic guitar and meg adding some tiny percussion, i think that'd be great at this point in time. but he obviously seems to be tired with that small band. at least that's how i feel after reading those songs descriptions.
tattoo
I feel like White Stripes is a process of evolution. I also feel that GBMS was their best album front to back by far. I look forward to more experimentation. White Stripes purists be damned! I don't want anymore jarring songs with all the youthful angst. I want mature Jack and Meg to put out a beautiful album and completely stretch the boundaries of their medium.
Hans Christian Anderson
even with that clip and those descriptions i still have no idea what this album will sound like. fucking stoaked nonetheless though.

and yeah, their sporadic "we just recorded this album and will have it out next month" announcements are indeed awesome.

While I feel that Get Behind Me Satan may be their most unsatisfying release in the band's history, there's no reason not to believe that this won't be awesome. Even Satan made my top records list from 2005, and had some really nice tracks ("Little Ghost" is a gem.)

"Doorbell" was also great. very much looking forward to this.

Jimmy, you and I have been on the same boat lately with a lot of albums. If only you won't so wrong about that last Thermals album...
Artem
get behind me satan was pretty good, actually
not great, but surely not a let down.

My favorite Stripes album is their self-titled debut, so anything sounding like I Fought Piranhas, Screwdriver, Cannon & Jimmy The Exploder would be heavenly... Lets hope the new release means another string of shows at the Auditorium; that would be tits!!!

this sucks. how are we supposed to enjoy an album without 10 months of speculation and straining to hear nuances in crappy leaks?

I do too. I thought this meant agreeance. wink.gif

I can't see how anyone could not think GBMS was their best work, but that's just me. I went through a real obsession with this band, have all the albums and all the B Sides, etc. And, for me, I find myself liking songs from the earlier albums. But, I'd never listen all the way through on those- I skip to the songs I like. GBMS: I can listen all the way through. It rules.
Squirmin Herman Wedemeyer
I think I'd have to go with Elephant as my favorite. GBMS was just too inconsistent for me. Great highs, but a few clunkers as well.

This is not to say that I don't think they're still capable of greatness.

oh man, i'm lonely is so good. thats the best song elton john (or bernie taupin) never wrote.

i'm in the phil, tattoo and petras group. GBMS did have the weakest singles this band had ever put out, comparatively at least (ie they're still good songs but not dead leaves or 7 nation army caliber). that said, its definitely their most complete LP and is their best one too, start to finish. my favorite record of 2005 actually.
