I think I'd have to go with Elephant as my favorite. GBMS was just too inconsistent for me. Great highs, but a few clunkers as well.

This is not to say that I don't think they're still capable of greatness.

"The Nurse" – 3:47
"Little Ghost" – 2:18
"Passive Manipulation" – 0:35
Features Meg White on lead vocal and timpani
"As Ugly as I Seem" – 4:10
"I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet)" – 4:19

These songs don't do much for me.

Insanity.

Any thoughts as to why this was never released on vinyl? I find that rather strange.

F N A. I love those tunes. Absolutely love every one of them. Take, Take, Take was the only song on the album I had any problems with at first, and I ended up loving it.

I think every song on GBMS rules.

oh man, i'm lonely is so good. thats the best song elton john (or bernie taupin) never wrote.

i'm in the phil, tattoo and petras group. GBMS did have the weakest singles this band had ever put out, comparatively at least (ie they're still good songs but not dead leaves or 7 nation army caliber). that said, its definitely their most complete LP and is their best one too, start to finish. my favorite record of 2005 actually.

I think Blue Orchid was an oustanding single. Unreal actually. The quintessential single ...
Squirmin Herman Wedemeyer
I know it gets a lot of love here, but I really just can't stand "Little Ghost".

Again, I like the album. But I'd probably place it 3 or 4 in terms of my favorite WS records:

1. Elephant
2. De Stijl
3. White Blood Cells
4. Get Behind Me Satan
5. White Stripes

Great band - I look forward to anything they put out.

Neh. Sorry, dude. Both Seven Nation Army and Fell in Love With a Girl trump that song. Matter of fact, so do Black Math, Dead Leaves, and many many more.

I really like GBMS, Tattoo, don't get me wrong. But I still just don't see how you, a massive WS fan, can rank it as their best. It was alot of things to be sure. "Different", less aggressive, "outside the box". I just can't put it past any previous efforts by them. To be fair, in a live setting, the songs from GBMS get way, way better, but that kinda stuff just doesn't count when you're ranking LP's do it?

I really love this song and when it came out it made a huge spash for the album. At the time, everyone was talking about how the Stripes always deliver with awesome singles. Since, I love the song and think it's an awesome "first hear" song: I thought it was a quintessential single.

I dunno. It's a good song, no doubt. But for the Stripes, it's also a really weird song. The falsetto, the ghostly sound effects, how very little guitar Jack is playing on it. It's really hard to get into, and it took me many listens to get it. I actually feel the song really gets going when Megg comes in pounding on the cymbals, popping that snare. It's Megg's song almost entirely and it rocks. But if I were gonna play a song to let someone know what The White Stripes sound like, it would not be Blue Orchid. Probably Dead Leaves.

That and the blue in the title screws up the color scheme.

Take Take Take for me was immediate. Always loved that song.

I'll comment on GBMS; The imagery is so awesome. It takes you places. Like Take, Take, Take. It's like a Dylan Desire Era tune for me. You can see what's happening. Amazing lyrical work in my mind.

I listened to Get Behind Me Satan a couple months ago when I was going out with a girl who wasn't giving me any lovin'. Mr. Jack White must've had a similar experience, because just about every song on that album seemed to have that subject matter.

So when my woman wasn't giving me any lovin', it was my fave. But my old standby is White Blood Cells for sure.

Blue Orchid was an amazing single when you consider it as an advertisement for the band. My wife and also 3 co-workers of hers that had up until that point dismissed the white stripes entirely asked me for copies of GBMS shortly after hearing Blue Orchid. And 2 of those co-workers came back looking for the back catalog...they've been converted. So when you consider a singles job is to win new fans Blue Orchid delivered.

As for Clunkers on GBMS the only song I could really do without is Instinct Blues, I think it would have made a better B-side it just doesn't fit for me on the album. I don't dislike it per say I just dislike it on this particular album. Aside from that one track it's easily start to finish my favorite Stripes record and I really can't wait to hear where they go next.

Red Rain performed live is fucking killer totally blew me away.

"Blue Orchid" easily holds up to this day for me as the best single they've ever released.

i thought that, but the last chicago date is a friday. so they'd go somewhere the next two days, take the following week off, and come back to the area for a milwaukee gig? i suppose it's possible. that is, unless there's some unlikely weekday festival during the school year.

over the weekend i saw get behind me satan "alternate set" on vinyl. it's the promised vinyl-only recording of the album that was released under the radar. has anyone heard this? is it dramatically different? i'd heard that they were going to record it live in a studio after they'd toured for the album (practice makes perfect?), but the pictures on the sleeve are of them playing live with an audience. i'm just wondering if this is worth the import prices.

i also saw 50,000,000 white stripes fans can't be wrong in the same bin. it's a compilation of their early singles, mostly the sympathy ones that go for beaucoup bucks on ebay. does it sound ok? i guess i'm not opposed to getting it because some of those songs are great, but i'm a little worried about the quality since it appears to be a bootleg.

any additional information on these is appreciated. thanks.

I can't wait for the new White Stripes album

It is rare to have a band around whose records you can consistently look forward to with genuine anticipation. As long as the White Stripes are going strong, we have one.
Alan McGee

News of an imminent sixth album from the White Stripes was a joyous surprise.

With the unveiling of the Raconteurs last year, the notion that the duo's dynamic had reached exhaustion seemed worryingly plausible. Get Behind Me Satan, a brilliantly sharp record that swings between anger and melancholy, sounds at times like a heartfelt farewell. The lyrics, while characteristically enigmatic, communicate a painful disenchantment. The 13 songs contrast each other so finely that the record creates the sense of a perfected formula. Hearing it, I felt that the White Stripes had made their great record, done fitting justice to their muses, and that further developments were unlikely.

In reflection, such thoughts have circulated since White Blood Cells brought them widespread attention. Nay-sayers have frequently depicted the band as a one-trick act whose crude sound and lack of musical ambition would soon condemn them to the dustbins of rock-history. Five albums deep and as defiantly idiosyncratic as ever, yet another great album would surely be enough to banish such cynicism. I am as intrigued to learn that Icky Thump took three weeks to record (the longest of any White Stripes album to date) as I am to hear that bagpipes may feature. There is little doubt in my mind that the results will yet again astound and endure.

Reviewing the five records released so far, I cannot help but think of a refreshingly frank assessment Beck made of contemporary rock'n'roll. He described the genre as a worn-out pack of cards with which musicians must struggle to come up with captivating new tricks. There is certainly no shortage of bands that can play a convincing homage to past glories. The space between being inspired by former greats and serving as a slick update is becoming ever more indistinct. White Stripes albums always elude this grey area. Love or hate it, their sound is distinctly their own and doesn't lean heavily on influences. When you hear Seven Nation Army you may detect the shadow of a Ron Asheton riff but the song has enough character to distinguish itself.

This feat seems remarkable when you consider the band's taste in vintage equipment and recording methods, and their love of truly bygone American music. Even when they cover Blind Willie McTell (Your Southern Can is Mine) or Son House (Grinnin' in Your Face) they imbue the songs with enough jagged force and wild-eyed strangeness for you not to tune out and play the originals instead. Producing credible covers of these extraordinary songs alone proves that there is talent here head and shoulders above most of what we have heard in recent years.

What is it that sets the White Stripes' sound apart and prevents it from becoming stale? Many credit the simplicity and stripped-down nature of the songs. The De Stijl-inspired ethic of self-imposed limitations is undoubtedly integral to the band's make-up. Songs are limited to the three elements of vocals, guitar and drums or vocals, piano and drums. All imagery appears in the same three colours. Lyrics often portray childhood as a moment of unaffected creativity and imagination. But simplicity in itself does not explain the power and appeal of the music. As with Detroit forefathers the Stooges, I think the calculation and determined aim in what the White Stripes do is often overlooked in favour of the primitive quality. But this canniness is really where they have the edge on many contemporaries. For Jack White, I don't think it would be enough to borrow bits and pieces of sounds and images from favoured bands and offer the resulting collage as something new. I suspect he may have concluded early on that if anything exciting were to be extracted from the old pack of cards it would require a methodically organised and highly personal vision.

Fortunately (with no disrespect intended to Meg White) I think he had the talent to pull this off. The songs are surreal concoctions of American roots music and rock'n'roll. They are brash, fun and defiantly untouched by whatever is happening outside the distinctive and mysterious world of the White Stripes. Belying their raucously improvised tone there is a strong sense of control and purpose. Whenever I have seen the band in concert I have been impressed with the use they make of rock'n'roll as spectacle. The shows are not Kiss-style pantomime but neither do they resemble static, mundane indie outings. Instead, there is just the right amount of the outlandish and strange to remind you that rock'n'roll should be enigmatic and thrilling. It is a rare thing to have a band around whose records you can consistently look forward to with genuine anticipation. As long as the White Stripes are going strong, we have one.
