Full Version: 2006...bad year for music

2004 had some pretty good cds with the streets, arcade fire, animal collective, madvillain, all kinda stuff. looking back on 2005, it was pretty good but not incredibly memorable. I was extremly excited about the flaming lips and now its just taking up memory. Im bored with it already. I am not excited for radiohead, built to spill sounds good but not built to spill good. I dont know. perhaps Im a pesimist (sp) but this year seems like it is going to be pretty unmemorable as well.

I dont remember an amazing music year since 99 and I dont know if I will see anything come close any time soon. what does everyone feel about the past 10 years in music and what year, if any do you want to be TOPPED.

This is a parody thread right?
i mean we aren't even out of the second month, and who knows what greatness lies ahead. i mean if you judge everything by the fact that the lips sort of dropped the ball, then your not being very fair to this year.
solace
the new BTS is fantastic, Band of Horses is great, plenty of great albums this early in '06 (we're not even 2 months in)

What a bold proclamation to make in fuckin Feb.

holy shit, like quadruple post.
stella del vinile
mogwai, maximo park, belle & sebastian, film school, the lilys and arab strap have already made 2006 a great year for music in my eyes. i'm pretty satisfied for being two months into the year.
Cinnamon P.
Im sorry, I ment to post this in a thread where people actually read.

I'm not saying "man, its already feb and theres nothing good" you would know that if you took the time to put all those words together into full sentances. I'm saying, with proof from alot of the years past, what I know will be released, and the small amount of disapointment I heard (The flaming lips reference) I don't really know what to expect but I dont expect much

god damn you guys need to chill the fuck out sometimes and read.

Bad years are for people with bad taste.
solace
well, considering that usually 5 outta 10 of my top albums in a given year are bands that i've never heard of before that year...
Undercooked Sausage
I did read, it's just that 9/10 established artists always disappoint. Wait for the debuts and bands you've never heard of before.
beansimpson
It'll only be a bad year for music if RIAA manages to get mp3 players to build in that they can only accept songs bought from their websites, and not ripped from a cd. That or if either YSI gets shut down, or Aerosmith puts out a new cd.
The Luscious Phil
the one thing i hope will happen this year is to have that one amazing album that trumps pretty much everything else. it seems like in the 00's this happens in the even years:
2000 - Kid A
2002 - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
2004 - Funeral (not my personal fav, but it was the biggest success story of 04, so im counting it)

so hopefully something big comes along this year.

look, I know. perhaps I stated it a bit wrong and then flipped out because I didn't get too much sleep. what I was saying (poorly) in the first place is that I havent seen much originality or amazing stuff from many different artists. I am excited still to hear the new up and coming bands, I like the Band of Horses Debut, but what I mean to say is a year like 99 for me (sigur ros/flaming lips/D-plan/Built to Spill/Olivia Tremor Control/Bonnie Billy) each of these discs is amazing in my eyes. to have so many amazing albums released in the same year was spectacular and I dont think I can see it happening again.

I'm not picking on 2006, Im just saying that 2005 (in my opinion) was not that amazing. I like all of those discs from 99 better than Sufjan, Wolf Parade, and LCD and those are my top 3 of 2005. I just feel that extremly memorable years filled with amazing music wont come by (for me at least) any time soon. I wanted to know what years were everyone elses favorites and what cds made them that way. instead I was assulted but I guess I can expect that for not fully explaining myself.

anyway, if you still care to respond then what year was your year and what debut bands or leaks make you think that 2006 can be a "classic" year.

your taste is almost too generic to be a gimmick

crybaby.

i totally agree with what i've highlighted. i said that a lot last year. the albums that caught my attention really stuck with me. but overall, '05 was mediocre at best.

i think that the years chock full of amazing albums are long gone. that's just my cynical look at music, though. there's simply too much of it for anything to really stand out and be amazing. any asshole with a computer can put together an album now.

i'd say that my last great year of music was 2003. but, that was also when i discovered a lot of my now favorite artists (anything scottish, stars, broken social scene, etc.)

Its that possitive attitude that makes us hate the British.

Hey guys, it is your fault for not really understanding how stupid the first post in this thread is. Chill out and read.

I don't think anyone is allowed to have their favorite year for music be any year after they turn 25, preferably 18, but some people are slow. Seriously, I'm pretty sure 97.8% of people will agree the best year ever occurred before they reached 25.

2006 Kayo Dot, Mogwai, Liars albums are all better than them.

Plus Pink, if we're counting that as 06.

Too many of us were around for the 80s. That number has to be higher than 2.2%.
Cinnamon P.
Well the whole idea is opinion based, one person's favorite year can be another person's least favorite. and yes every year can be the best year if I let it but lets be honest, who actually thinks that every year is musically better than the last continually?

and those new mogwai, film school, and wilderness discs were pretty average at best in my opinion.

UM HELLO ARCTIC MONKEYS CAME OUT THIS YEAR END OF DISCUSSION

best year for new albums from my favorite bands in many many years......
Uncle Remus
casual sunday is obviously on crack or insane. I don't believe in people seeing the future, so that option doesn't hold water as a possibility.

2006: food & liquor, doctors advocate, hell hath no fury, fishscale

pretty good

I actually agree with CP; I think 2006 sucked (at least compared to this year, and '05 was better, too).
Pavement Ist Rad
Ha, at the time, Cinnamon Pooter was the worst newbie since Dr. Jimmy. Just awful. Between this and his complete and utter failure to offer up a successful argument as to why Sonic Youth should be compared with Isn't Anything-era My Bloody Valentine... man. LOL. Great poster, of course.

And '06 was pretty stellar. Incredible year for metal, especially.

As I'm old and don't listen to metal, I still prefer '07.

i think 2004 was one of the best years in recent yrs, 2005 was good too

if i had to compare 2006 to 2004-5, then i would say it was a disappointment.

not gonna say it was a bad year though
RabbiSchmoiley
It is kind of hard to say an entire year sucks... so that's a bit of hyperbole. For me, I knew it was a supbar year when I had such a hard time picking a top 10. That is to say, I literally was clutching at straws to find 10 albums I liked enough to warrant being in a year-end top ten; this year, I have at least 20-25 albums that are good enough for that same thing. So, there's my reasoning, take it or leave it.
Cinnamon P.

Good boarding in 2005/6
- inside jokes to dan
- using the same pictures a million times
- capitolizing FUCK every time it is (over) used.

yeah, I did pretty much suck, but now I'm just a non-newbie who still sucks.

anyone wanna talk about animal collective or fennesz some more?

why does this thread always get bumped. mods, ban anyone who read this thread!
Pavement Ist Rad
No, ha, you're awesome! Cinnamon Cooter, '07: BALL-LICKINGLY TASTE-AAAAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!!

Seriously, though, when some guy with a fucking Neutral Milk Hotel avatar just comes out of nowhere and starts waving his dick around with his "opinions," lolz must be had!
