thanksgiving

As we finish eating Thanksgiving leftovers, Jim and Greg clear out musical discussions still left over from earlier in the year. Sample Platter: DJ Shadow’s Rocket Fuel

With his 1996 album, Endtroducing, DJ Shadow cemented his place in music history for creating what many believe to be the first full-length made entirely of samples. Beyond the technical achievement, the album is considered a landmark of instrumental hip-hop. So when Shadow announced his new double-album, Our Pathetic Age, producer Andrew Gill jumped at the chance to do a Sample Platter segment with him. Shadow explained how he selects samples from his famously large record collection and how the album's first single, "Rocket Fuel", came together.

Jim

Lupe Fiasco's 2006 single, "Kick, Push" has been featured in it’s own Sample Platter segment, but Jim's adding it to the Desert Island Jukebox because he's been hearing it anew as he shares it with his students. He says it works on every level imaginable and does for skateboarding what The Beach Boys did for surfing and Chuck Berry did for driving.

Dear Listeners,

For more than 15 years, Sound Opinions was a production of WBEZ, Chicago's public radio station. Now that the show is independent, we're inviting you to join the band and lend a hand! We need your support more than ever because now we have to do all the behind-the-scenes work that WBEZ handled before (like buying insurance and paying for podcast hosting, ugh). Plus, we have some exciting ideas we'd like to try now that there's no one to tell us no!
